Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

If the pats want OBJ, the giants have no leverage since the rams are out. Not saying it’s gonna happen, but the cooks trade hurt the giants a bit.
I can't wrap my head around why they would go get him, knowing what he's going to demand as a contract. I'm not questioning the talent, but his Diva ways and contact demands make it a no deal to me. Unless they are just trying to drive up the price on the Jests.

This tackle class is so full of holes that taking a tackle at 31 would be a bad waste of a pick. I'd have Antonio Garcia above every tackle in this draft besides maybe Orlando Brown and Mike McGlinchey. You don't draft positions, you draft players. The value in this draft is at pass rusher, linebacker, corner, and running back - incidentally, all needs for the Patriots.

There are 3-4 OT's who it seems could be developed into 2019 starters. IMHO, they will all be gone by Pick 50. So, we will likely get one of them, even if we over-reach by ten or so spots. The need and the scarcity of LT talent at the top makes up the difference in value. So, I could see McClinchey at 23 or even a trade up, and the others between 23-31.

Don't want him as a one year rental. How much will he take for 4 years is at issue. I know it seems high but look at the Watkins deal.

Sammy Watkins
signed a 3 year, $48,000,000 contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, including a $21,000,000 signing bonus, $30,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,000,000. In 2018, Watkins will earn a base salary of $790,000, a signing bonus of $21,000,000 and a workout bonus of $10,000.

You would have to start there.
It will be interesting to see what Cooks new contract will be.

Cookies had to catch a ton of long throws. Let's not pretend he was garbage and be grateful for his contribution last yr and the incredible asset we got from his trade.

Excuses dont cut it. Thats how the cookie crumbles.

The jump from 15 yards a catch in 2016 to 16.6 yards a catch in 2017 is not that insurmountable. A 57% catch rate for a primary player is not NE material. 2 HOF QBs have watched Cooks walk. Brees and the NO passing offense did not struggle at all in 2017 in the absence of Cooks. 2017 New Orleans Saints Statistics & Players | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Says here Cooks was targeted long 15 times and caught 3. Brady and the Pats are not a long bomb team at all. Brandin Cooks 2017 Splits | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Give me the drafts picks to fix the defense and find a LT.

Or, you know, they weren't going to pay 14mil a year for ANY WR. Reports are that they spent the past month trying to work out a deal they could live with, so I guess they didn't hate him /that/ much.
I don’t recall anyone saying they hated him, just that they were underwhelmed. If you asked me before last season if he would be closer to a Randy Moss type gamebreaker (not statswise before everyone loses their minds) or a Brandon Lloyd type stats by volume of targets I would’ve thought he would have been much closer to Moss.

The Jets have no interest in OBJ. Too much of a headcase. Besides, we may not have a superstar now, but Anderson, Enunwa, Pryor, Kearse and a couple decent 2nd year WRs make up a pretty solid WR corps.

They drafted their left tackle of the future last year. I know the newest toy is always the shiniest, but there's no tackle available in this draft that's a measurably better prospect than Antonio Garcia (and many of those in the top 50 are much worse or, like Connor Williams, project better at guard). Yes, Garcia has to show he can get back into football shape, but if you're projecting for 2019, then wasting valuable draft capital on a reach in a ****ty tackle class when you already picked up a comparable prospect last year makes little sense to me.

I agree with the potential OBJ numbers. He'd be a bargain at those numbers.

The new contract for Cooks MIGHT be interesting. More important is that Cooks couldn't negotiate an acceptable extension with the patriots. Of course, we got a 1st, so we would be laying out a huge contract PLUS the 23rd pick.

If the patriots CURRENTLY evaluate Garcia as being better than the top 3 OT's, then there is no issue. In that case, we potentially already have our LT of the future. However, if garcia is CURRENTLY rated lower than this LT class, then we should draft one.

I would be interested in seeing which side originated the Trade. Who made the phone call? Haven't read that yet.

Here is another thought as I get set for my multi grain bagel with cream cheese and a hazelnut coffee for breakfast. The Bengals seem to be in a trading mood. I mentioned Cooks to the Bengals a couple days ago.

But would they spring AJ Green for perhaps #31? He's only 29. A better fit than Cooks.

Green is eligible for a $200,000 workout bonus throughout the contract's life. 2018: $10.55 million, 2019: $11.97 million, 2020: Free Agent

These two years might be TB shelf life.

In my opinion Cousins, giving up two first rounders for a two or three year bench QB, while we are tryong for a Super Bowl does not make sense. Mayfield? Sure. Rosen? Nice. We need much help.

Our cap hits would be less. You include the amortized bonus money. But let's be clear, if the bungles traded AJ for #31 with 2 years left on the contract, whoever executed the deal should be fired.

He is quite the drama queen.

Running around with his saggy pants buddy Beiber.

I was watching NFLN this morning and they were openly wondering if the Patriots would package the picks they have a move up to select a QB. Depending on the QB, I would be open to that. If Brady is serious about playing a few more years, grabbing a QB in the first round would give the team that fifth year option and would put the new QB in play as Brady's career is winding down.

I love the trade. Cooks took the top off the defense in his first year here, but he's soft and his route tree was limited in this offense. He basically ran the 7, 8, and 9 routes predominantly in the offense from what I saw. It DID create a need at wideout that they may fill with Jordan Matthews or a draft pick, but they got good value for Cooks and unloading him for a first rounder this year was a no-brainer as he was essentially due to collect north of $16M next season and there was no way the team was paying him that.

I think they have too many holes to package both picks, and I think three of the four quarterbacks (Rosen, Mayfield, and Darnold) I'd be willing to draft will be gone by #9 anyways, which is probably realistically their ceiling in moving up. Jackson's my number three QB behind Rosen and Mayfield and I would be willing to move up to #14, ahead of Arizona, to get him. That might only cost #23 and the later 2nd rounder. That leaves two top-50 picks to be spent filling other holes - and there's value there at pass rusher, corner, and running back.

Interpretation of that record kinda depends on knowing how far downfield Cooks was on those pass attempts. Was he running an Edelman/Amendola route just beyond the sticks? Or was he 20+ yards downfield?

His 7 catches for 157 yards = 22.4 YPC.

Since Cooks wasn't often running many short crossers/slants, nor was he often getting great YAC, that YPC might indicate that Brady was taking deep downfield shots on those particular throws - possibly more or less forced into them by shorter routes being well-covered and pressure coming at him.
To put it in perspective - 100 of those yards came off of 3rd-and-10+, so the other 4 catches (his 3rd-and-8 reception was for 9yds) accounted for the other 57-yards.

You can play with the totals here too if you want to try it out:

Please, Cooks had 65 out 114 = 57% . If he had 4 more catches, he would have 60%. That is as statistical insignificant as it gets.

I agree. If we want jackson, then he is worth using the 2nd second to move up. Yes, the value of our 2 first is indeed Pick 9. Lots of strange things happen when folks realistically trying to trade into the top 10.

If we truly think someone available after 6 is our QB stud f the future, I could see us throwing in another pick. However, I expect at least 3 quarterbacks to be gone before 6, and maybe all four. However, if OUR stud is there, I could see up moving up higher than 9.

Two ACL tears....hope you had a good health plan

Tell me about it! We do fortunately. But yeah.... Fortunately, one of them was covered by his college, since it happened during a basketball practice. But still. Rough 18 months for the family for sure.

Wish I could give this like a hundred likes.

Cooks is awesome. Is he a generation talent like moss or gronk? No, he’s just like 96% of that

No, he's not 96% of Moss or Gronk. But he is very, very good. I loved having him on the Pats and wish, all things being equal, that he'd remain here. But this was a very good trade for the Patriots, so I'm on board with it.
