Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

The health of Edelman and Mitchell is crucial now. We were never paying 6 mil per for Dola. I do not think Dorsett and Britt are the answers, but would not mind being surprised. I think obtaining another WR just became a priority - plus the need to look for Edelman’s eventual replacement.

Fortunately, they're not remotely bare at WR or TE. They have the best TE in history still. They have a top-level WR in Edelman, and several other solid guys. As of THIS MOMENT, their receiving corps took a hit with the Cooks trade. But does anyone think the Pats won't address this?

Or let me ask you all this: who would you rather have - Cooks OR Edelman coming off an ACL?

I don't think I'm overrating Edelman. I have two kids who are college athletes who have torn ACLs and were back at full strength within the year. Edelman is an elite athlete with world-class medical care and physical therapy. Welker tore his at the end of one season and was solid the next year. Edelman will have had a full year to recover. He should be very close to 100%.

I underrate Patterson because there's a reason why two other teams have let him go. He's just never been a great receiver is all. I really HOPE he turns the corner and becomes something solid at WR, but right now, all I see is a special teams guy.

To primetime's point - yes Britt didn't get much PT for NE last year. They added him in mid-December, for crying out loud. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, on crummy teams, he put up these numbers:

2014: 48 rec, 748 yds, 15.6 ypc, 3 td
2015: 36 rec, 681 yds, 18.9 ypc, 3 td
2016: 68 rec, 1002 yds, 14.7 ypc, 5 td

So we know he can play. That's not in question. Patterson, for all his speed, has never had a ypc of more than 11.6, which is hard to believe.

Edelman's 32. The human body doesn't recover the same way at 32 as it does at 18, and Edelman's never been an iron man. Edelman's a stud, but he's getting older and more fragile and there's no succession plan.

Britt's numbers with the Rams were a function of them having literally nobody else to throw to. It's like posting Reche Caldwell stats from 2006. As soon as Fisher was gone, they dumped him as fast as they could.

I actually think Patterson's a moderately useful player. He has more yards from scrimmage on fewer offensive plays than Chris Hogan does over the course of his career. I would still prefer Hogan as an every down player but it's nice to have a guy who can score from anywhere on the field.

He put up numbers, but I was never really impressed. His YAC was lacking, even counting the mileage from running in a circle.

I don't think they're done with the WRs. But on the whole, that's an outstanding group of receivers. Not just wide receivers, but ALL players who catch the ball. I expect them to add another quality WR to this group.

But yes, like every team, it's dependent on health.

There's ways around that though. A good wideout can adjust to the throw, and Cooks is a good wideout. Throw it behind the safety and let Brandin "4'3 40" Cooks go get it. He's got the hands and he's got the will.

Also I'll just say this -- it's a testament to Cooks' talent that he got as far as he did in New england. Our offensive scheme is not one he's built to benefit from. What Cooks needs is an offense that spreads the field and a quarterback who can buy the time to make deep throws. What we have is a master of the quick draw. That's not really a very good match of talents.

What we need, and what Cooks isn't, is a guy who can muscle up and make contested catches. Tom Brady throws quick slants and sees windows through tight coverage, but he needs players who can win battles for the ball and exploit those windows. Cooks' thing is for the quarterback to buy time for him to get open, that's just not what we do. And he's not built strong enough to win those positional battles. It was a poor fit to begin with.

Tom Brady isnt a "quick slant qb". It might be whats he's best at, but he's also one of the best in the game at throwing it deep. My personal belief is, they have always chosen to go with the quick passing game, not because its something he's limited too. One its much easier to find receivers. Two those receivers are usually much cheaper. And 3 ,it helps Keep Brady from taking big shots, which is a reason he's still playing like he is at his age.

We threw the ball deep very often last year. Cooks had over 1200 yards, in which like half came off the long ball. We made it to the Super Bowl. The match was perfectly okay. Its the business side and return that were the cause of this trade and nothing else.

I both like and hate this trade. I like it because yeah, we got a good return for a potentially expensive WR. I hate it because why did we trade for Cooks in the first place? Seems like a waste of a move and draft picks really. 1st and 3rd for a slightly higher 1st and 6th essentially...

Yeah, the idea that the Patriots are a dink-and-dunk team is about ten years out of date. They've been consistently one of the most vertical offenses for the better part of this decade, and Cooks was an acquisition with that in mind.

Makes sense. He did come up huge in the afcc when we had no gronk or je11 but odds are we wont be without both of the 2 very often playoff time (hopefully). Wr at relative health is a position we are in good shape imo and cooks was just gravy.

I would hope this points towards knowing gronk will be a pat for sure this year. Hard to think wed be okay with letting cooks go if amendola and gronk wouldnt be returning.
