Cooks traded to Rams for 23 overall pick

So many are down on Cooks and Britt, but I think going through a full camp, with still good competition (assuming Mitchell heals) may light a fire under one of them to get on the same page with TB12 and be a solid WR4/5 option.

We must be pretty confident in a 100% recovery for Jules, I guess.

Uh, I hate to be the one here to tell you but Cooks will NOT be in camp with TB12

He was touted as being a fast guy, but I was not seeing the separation even after watching all 22s. He was not shifty enough, was not tall nor liked to jump and catch the ball high, preferred the ball to come to him. The one game he tried to fight was the one he got knocked out for trying to do too much. He was a luxury. Would have preferred we kept Dola.
I don't think we miss much. C. Kirk is a Patriots. Book it.

The Pats' receiving corps right now is:

WR Edelman (stud)
WR Hogan (solid)
WR Mitchell (solid)*
WR Britt (solid)
WR Patterson (special teams really)
WR Dorsett (better than his numbers showed, but not as good as Cooks)
WR Hollister (JAG)
TE Gronk (all-world)
TE Allen (fine)
TE Hollister (potential)
RB White (stud receiver)
RB Burkhead (excellent receiver)

*if healthy

I don't think they're done with the WRs. But on the whole, that's an outstanding group of receivers. Not just wide receivers, but ALL players who catch the ball. I expect them to add another quality WR to this group.

But yes, like every team, it's dependent on health.

Must have missed Kenny Britt's solid showing while he was a healthy scratch in the most important games last season.

You overrate JE11 coming off an ACL and underrate Patterson.

This offense has always been about Gronk + Edelman then the rest. In 2013 for the few games Gronk/Jules were healthy we scored 29 PPG with KT & Dobson surrounding them. The offense legitimately did not blink with Cooks out of the game in the superbowl. Slide Hogan in as a starter & have competition at WR3.

This.

Giving up a 1st for Cooks last year was a move made by Belichick to not let the offense (almost) get beat the same way twice; specifically in reaction to how Houston and Atlanta committed to playing single-high, man-coverage and keeping the extra defender underneath - all game long - to take away the shallow passing game. The offense was slow to adjust in both games. So, Cooks was a personnel move to keep defenses honest and not allow your O to rely on the underneath routes so much.

Fortunately for NE, losing Cooks in last years Superbowl didn't slow down the offense at all. They maintained their rhythm and threw deep quite a bit against a very good Philly D. Unfortunately for Cooks, that lowered his value to the team.

Lets assume for a second Belichick and his position coaches know more than us...
But they don't think Dorsett replaces Cooks for 1000 snaps

WHAT THE F ARE THE RAMS THINKING.....

They're seriously drinking the Bleacher Report Kool Aid that has them ranking #1 in preseason Power Rankings.

The biggest WTF is, Geoff cant hit the side of a barn on his deep ball. Last year he overthrew Sammy Watkins like 60% the time, when he was WIDE THE HELL open. It was one of the main reason Watkins production was deflated, and the reason KC signed him to Big $$$. I mean he was wide open all the time. Geoff just couldn't hit him. Mchomes has a Cannon and an amazing Deep Ball.
What makes them think getting another deep thereat, who arguably isn't much better, or better at all, is worth giving up the #23 pick. They're high.

God bless the weed, what a steal.

I watch a lot of All 22 during the offseason, And I witnessed it for myself.
I don't have the gifs but here, Look at article. Ive seen at least 3 more where he has many more examples of horrible deep ball plays that you can all look up.
Its hilarious
Film room: Jared Goff has improved, but his deep ball still needs work

There's ways around that though. A good wideout can adjust to the throw, and Cooks is a good wideout. Throw it behind the safety and let Brandin "4'3 40" Cooks go get it. He's got the hands and he's got the will.

Also I'll just say this -- it's a testament to Cooks' talent that he got as far as he did in New england. Our offensive scheme is not one he's built to benefit from. What Cooks needs is an offense that spreads the field and a quarterback who can buy the time to make deep throws. What we have is a master of the quick draw. That's not really a very good match of talents.

What we need, and what Cooks isn't, is a guy who can muscle up and make contested catches. Tom Brady throws quick slants and sees windows through tight coverage, but he needs players who can win battles for the ball and exploit those windows. Cooks' thing is for the quarterback to buy time for him to get open, that's just not what we do. And he's not built strong enough to win those positional battles. It was a poor fit to begin with.

I both like and hate this trade. I like it because yeah, we got a good return for a potentially expensive WR. I hate it because why did we trade for Cooks in the first place? Seems like a waste of a move and draft picks really. 1st and 3rd for a slightly higher 1st and 6th essentially...

You're totally ignoring the fact that the Patriots freed up 8.459M in cap space as well as the fact that they got a year's production out of Cooks.

Here is what the Patriots traded to get Cooks:
No 32 and No 103

They received :
Cooks and No. 118

In this trade:
They send Cooks and 4th round pick (No. 136)

They receive:
No 23 and a 6th round pick.

I think the year's worth of production, the move up from 32 to 23, and the 8.459M in cap space is worth the difference between 103 and whatever the 6th round pick the Rams sent them is..

If Dorsett could play like Cooks he would have done it by now

Not necessarily. He had some injuries...he probably got less reps as much of the reps were reserved to develop a better relationship between Cooks and Brady.

Awesome trade. Guy was on his last year on his contract and we got more for him than we gave up last year.

Ya, on the surface it's like "oh, that's too bad. He was a good piece to the puzzle."

But the reality is that he was most likely going to be a cap casualty.
