There is no reason to bring Shelton here if MB was pulling his weight. Brown was suppose to take over for big Vince Wilfork but the guy has been underwhelming and invisible at times.

The 2007 NE run defense was a $hithole, but it could not have been any worse in the middle of the DL where Ol Malcolm makes his living.

NE asked Vince to hit the road after a couple of seasons of Malcolm in the middle numbers. Vince was hitting his stride at this point in his career at NT.

Nah, maybe taken too high in the draft but wouldn’t say a bust. Having quality depth is important.

I don’t think the comparison is entirely fair, since Wilfork was a total beast.

The run defense sucked terribly. I think it was by far the worst in the Belichick era, but I wouldn’t put that all on Malcom Brown, either. There were actually times where it looked like he was showing good progression last year. He still seems to be a bit inconsistent.

************.

You have been on his **** since the day he was drafted.

Brown has been fine.

Dig deeper into why Shelton was acquired. Look at their contract situations

I gather this is about the 2017 team not 2007. Malcolm Brown certainly was not great however which member of the front 7 actually was great?

If you're asking based on what he projected himself to be as the "best pick the Pats ever made"? Then yes.

Aside from that, he has been okay at best but not a bust. Shelton was brought in to compliment Brown, not replace him. The Pats have been soft against the run for quite some time and the last time their run D was really good was 2006. Their line was like a brick wall until the AFC divisional game against the Chargers which is understandable since LT was insane and had a very good run blocking line. In fact, that was Ty Warren's best year as you could not run to his side.

I'm going to take a lot of heat for saying this but I always thought Wilfork was overrated. Was he good? Yes. Was he elite? Eh. 2006 was the only year where their run D was elite. Other than that, they've been soft in the middle and cracked if a team ran it enough times. Unlike Ted Washington or other elite DT's, I rarely saw Wilfork making such an impact where it made things easier for LB's to track down RB's. This is what elite DT's do, make LB's look better than they really are.

He's not great or anything but he's a useful piece. To be fair, there are really only a handful of difference-making defensive tackles in the league. Most guys are up and down, and you want one who's more up than down. I think Brown is on the lower end of being generally better than he is worse.

It's still a position of need, though.

So we only need 1 quality DT? Having them both on the inside will be great and injuries happen.

Sometimes you hit a home run. Sometimes a double. Nothing wrong with that. Better than striking out.

Since 2013 our top draft picks have been a lot closer to striking out than home runs

2014 Dominque Easley , Jimmy G
2015 Malcolm Brown, Jordan Richards, Geneo Grissom
2016 Cyrus Jones , Vince Valentine, Joe Thuney, Jacoby B
2017 Derek Rivers, Antonio Garcia

The only home run in there was Jimmy G, and he’s no longer on the team

Patriots had really good drafts 2010-2013.... I hope we can get back on that same track the next few years

He sucks.

Belidick's terrible roster management caught up with them. Getting 500 yards passing and 33 points still wasn't nearly enough.

I do have to say...I still haven’t gotten over the fact Brady threw for 500 yards and we still lost...I didn’t think that was possible.

Brown is a decent player and definitely not a bust. I'll grant you he hasn't lived up to some of the expectations when he was drafted. He has a place on our defense, but he also needs help on that line.

I don't think he was ever thought of as a Wilfork replacement. Wilfork was a huge, but kind of quick, and basically immovable 3-4 noseguard. Brown doesn't really fit as a noseguard. He is much more of a defensive tackle in a 4-3 or 4-3 variations.

Brown is a beast, but next to him in 2017 was 300 pound Defensive End Lawrence Guy playing tackle, along with the guy they found at Dunkies, Ricky Jean Francois. He got swallowed up by multiple blockers, and football is a numbers game. Depth of talent...

Brown, Shelton, Valentine, if healthy, is a nice rotation with Guy playing End on early downs and inside on 3rd and long. Last year after Branch checked out it Brown was all by himself, don't throw the baby out with the bath water.
