Makes sense. It is more likely than not that Gronk will play his final year in NE this season. An extension will be way too expensive especially given his injury issues and trading him a year before the contract expires could still bring in a nice package.

Or he’s getting dealt on or before draft day. Don’t rule it out.

The main reason I dont see this happening is because it would create a gigantic hole on offense. TE is one of the hardest positions to project in terms of draft. You dont just go out, draft a TE early and assume that he will contribute in his rookie year. Those players need time to absorb not only the skill position playbook but also understand their pass protection assignments. And to be physically proficient in pass-pro they also need to go through a NFL-level strength and conditioning program for a while.

That being said given the right offer anyone is tradeable, obviously.

I'm guessing this means no Pats comp pick for RJF, for now.

In his article yesterday, Ryan Hannable hypothesized that as a possibility.

He figured the likely candidate would be the 49ers.

That's part of why I think there's a possibility he may get dealt. He is at his peak in value.

If you have a healthy Bennett and you can pick the guy you think is the top TE in the draft the Pats are still worse at TE than with Gronk but they still above average. Offense is still top-5 with JE coming back. Because of the scarcity at TE that you mentioned, Gronk would have to fetch a nice haul of draft picks to make it worthwhile.

JPP to the Bucs for a 3rd and 2019 4th rounder. Giants also sending Tampa a 4th

If Gronk is traded, it seems to me more likely that it happens after the draft - after the Pats have at least some sort of replacement(s) under contract. So, the Pats would be getting a pick or picks in 2019.

All other teams have to do is wait until Gronk ticks off Belichick enough.
At that point, he will be available for a 7th round pick.

Of course that most probably only happens if there is a somewhat talented TE on the roster behind him. And Hollister or Allen are definitely not that.
I was going to start a thread about possibly trading Gronk. If he truly wants to retire or is just unhappy not being “free” like Amendola, maybe trade him to the highest bidder. At this point with the injury history and now a possible locker room issue. He’s not worth the trouble or 12 mill a year, let someone else deal with it.

The NYG-TBY deal for JPP might be a template for any trade of Gronk. Given Gronk's most recent season of production, such a deal might involve the Pats getting a 2nd-rounder and exchange of 3rd-rounders.

I don't think you can rule anything out with BB. There's smoke, certainly, but I suspect the media is overblowing it.

IF Gronk doesn't retire, or if he wants out to play somewhere else, I think BB would sign Bennett (who hinted at a comeback to NE) and draft a TE high if there's one they really like, then roll with Bennett, Allen, and a high-draft rookie. There are worse ways to go, but none of that approaches Gronk.

A bit more than that I think but generally I agree that some people might overestimate what a Gronk trade would bring in return.
