Need is a factor, just like talent and likely positional draft importance (in other words, drafting a K versus drafting a QB, generally means that you're looking lower in the draft).

Makes sense. It is more likely than not that Gronk will play his final year in NE this season. An extension will be way too expensive especially given his injury issues and trading him a year before the contract expires could still bring in a nice package.

Of course that most probably only happens if there is a somewhat talented TE on the roster behind him. And Hollister or Allen are definitely not that.
