Is that in the spirit of the system? Sounds like pushing the envelope.

What do you mean? Compensatory picks are specifically part of the free agency system, so they don't apply to players who were released by their teams (rather than having contracts expire) or players whose current contracts were traded.

Not sure what you mean. All the Patriots appear to be doing is acquiring players through means that don't affect comp picks, but I don't see any loopholes or anything.

linebackers.....need linebackers.....you can get not ready to start CB's as UDFA

Kenny Moore: Pats 2017 UDFA - started end of season in Indy & played well. Will compete for a starting role in 2018.

Cre’Von Leblanc: Pats 2016 UDFA - CB3-5 on the Bears. Capable slot CB.

Jonathan Jones: Pats 2016 UDFA CB3-5 that has played well in a depth role. Also team’s gunner across Slater.

Justin Coleman: Pats 2015 UDFA (after cutdowns) - Seattle’s CB3 in 2017 & CB2 in 2018. Played relatively well last year.

Malcolm Butler: Pats 2014 UDFA - nuff said

I’m down with rolling into camp with these four CBs & having another UDFA competition.

Hopefully we’re drafting both. We still need to bring in a rookie cb to hopefully step in by 2019 when we lose a few corners to FA. And we definitely need a speed upgrade at lb.

It was a trade not a free agent
Shouldn't effect our comp pick.

@Elijah was responding to a question about what level UFA signing/contract it would take to erase one of the Pats com picks. Wasn't about the McCourty deal.

I like it for two reasons:

First, from a purely football standpoint, he's a potential upgrade over Rowe, Jones, etc.

Second, IF (and I'm not convinced it's really an issue, but IF) there is any latent grumblings over what happened with Butler in the Super Bowl, making a move that excites Devin (one of your defensive captains) could have intangible benefits.

Plus lets see how twin power works on the field. If they can really make each other better from the pure sibling thing.. Hopefully increases competition/motivation & not create too much familiarity in DB room w Harmon part of the pack..

90% of fans cant even tell 32 players in the next draft. If someone gets upset about the tradedown aspect of the trade that happens in the 200s then that person needs their posting rights removed for a month.

It's even worse rounds 6-7. Yeah, sometimes you get an Edelman, but most often you just get a Devin Lucien or Conor McDermott. It's why the Patriots often spend those picks on special teamers or whatever. Those guys have elite skills and may stick around as a result, while drafting some bottom of the barrel quarterback or tackle probably isn't going to work.

Will absolutely take a guy who can compete to be the #2 guy for that little money, especially considering contracts other guys are getting lately. Awesome move. It’ll be a very fun year for the DBs.

Personally I’d be okay with them rolling with Gilmore/McCourty/Rowe/Jones/Jones plus the Lewis kid, as long as they make some more improvements in the front seven.

Following the rules always seems to be a loophole the NFL needs to fix. Somebody will eventually ***** about it lol.

McDermott......ughhhhhh

He looked terrible on film

Yeah and he’d probably cost most of our cap space.

Speaking of which ...

By my rough calculations, after the McCourty trade and an estimate of ~$3M 2018 cap hit for Burkhead's new contract, the Pats have +/- $5.5M in usable cap space left to spend (after setting aside draftee requirements and emergency in-season reserve funds).

Fleming/Waddle
Slater/Bademosi
Marquis Flowers all remain unsigned.

The Pats will probably need to make a move or two to free up more cap space fairly soon.

Meh. He's an average CB and not better than Rowe.

However this move does remind me of...
