This would be disappointing. Talk about wasting Brady's last few years. Several million dollars of valuable, limited cap space on Andy Dalton's former clipboard holder and a top draft pick on another QB? I'll take a 6th Super Bowl since I think most of us could handle that in exchange for finishing bottom 10 in the league for 1 year after Brady retires, rather than playing it safe while Super Bowl chances are at an all time high.
The odds of such a seamless, Favre to Rodgers type of transition are slim and rare. Is it really worth holding back on building a 6th Super Bowl winning team around Brady to try achieving it anyway?
I'm confused by your post. There's nothing about signing a veteran backup to upgrade from Hoyer that suggests they're not going to compete for a title in 2018. Upgrading from Hoyer is not "playing it safe." It's a need. It doesn't prevent them from making other moves to compete in any way. Besides, whoever they sign now may or may not make it out of camp.
I get that you hate McCarron. Fine. What veteran would you have them sign? Is Hoyer the best available backup for the 41-year-old QB? There's not a lot talent among FA QBs right now. Kaepernick? Geno Smith? Blaine Gabbert? Who?
I do believe they'll draft a rookie QB. That is strictly a futures move. Just like Tom Brady. We'll see what they've got a couple of years from now. Will they get a good one? Who knows?
