Why do people put so much stock in finals series/super bowl record?

This is something I've never understood. Brady just lost in the super bowl for a 3rd time and now people are acting like that is a blight on his resume, which I don't understand. Why is losing in the final round of the playoffs a strike against a players resume? It's as if any year that a player doesn't get that far doesn't even count lol. Guys lose in any other round of the playoffs and we don't think twice about it but if they lose in the final round it's like its the worst thing ever. Would Brady's legacy be better if he had lost to the Jags in the AFC title game rather than the super bowl? That's so backwards, a guy shouldn't be penalized for getting further.

And every time I bring this up people (not here but in other forums) always tell me "you don't get credit for just getting to the super bowl", I'm not saying Brady should get credit for just getting there. I'm saying he shouldn't be penalized for getting there and losing. This doesn't even just apply to Brady, it also applies to LeBron and any other team sport athlete. Putting emphasis on a players record in the final round of the playoffs makes no sense whatsover. Why is finishing 2nd in a given season WORSE then finishing 3rd, 4th etc.?

The Steeler fans I know are laughing because "Ha, Ha, your team lost in the Super Bowl"

The stupidity is real , and deep.

Since it's Olympics time, I say "Yeah, silver medals suck. What really sucks worse, though, is to not even get to the finish line"

I don’t think anyone in the national media is saying SB52 is a blight on his resume other than Rob Parker.

Before Brady, Montana set this standard of perfection in the Super Bowl by being 4-0, no INTs. This has perpetuated a myth in the American Conscience that he is clutch in the playoffs. This is far from reality. He is 16-7 in the playoffs and lost plenty of games to tough NFC teams like the giants and redskins. In the super bowl, he ended up beating average teams like denver and Cincinatti. He lost 49-3 to the Giants - when has Brady ever lost a playoff game by 46 points?

The idea that it is better to lose in the divisional round than in the super bowl is stupid. You have to win MORE games to get to the super bowl, so is it Brady’s fault Montana couldn’t take his team to the super bowl in some years?

You know who says this? Two groups:

1. Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, and Green Bay fans. It's there was of establishing dominance. "You're not as good as us."
2. Haters. "ha, see, Brady will never be as good as Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman..."

Who doesn't point this out? Bills fans, Vikings fans. 0-4 is way worse than 5-3 or 5-5.

Simple fact: No other QB has been to 8. It's amazing, and it will never be repeated. People, for the most part, are jealous of the fact that it's not their QB that is doing it. Whatever.

Because Americans don’t reward losing and Undefeated is the best.

Being undefeated in the Super Bowl is a big thing when you win it 4 times. It’s a big plus for Montana and Bradshaw

BRADY IS STILL THE GOAT SO WHO CARES

This loss did nothing to impact him negativey

Apparently, the game ended before the 2 minute warning.

Brady didn't lose Super Bowl 52, the defense did, he threw for 500yrs 3TDs No int, he did his part.

Logic lacks nowadays. If you dont win it all, you are losing at some point. So basically what they’re saying is its better to lose like in the wildcard playoffs or maybe even not make the playoffs.

The exception i could see is if you lose with a super team.... so i guess i could see them holding sb42 against him (even though we know that wasn’t his fault). But this years team and 2011, with Montana or any other qb basically is lucky to make the postseason if that. Just plain stupid to hold those against him.

We'll never know what would have happened had Montana managed to get to eight Super Bowls. Too bad Montana's four one-and-dones stopped him from having a chance to show us.

The takeaway: Brady went to twice as many Super Bowls, and Montana had twice as many one-and-dones.

Not sure how your time on the planet hasn't taught you this and I hate to be the one to have to break this to you but 99 out of every 100 people are idiots. And many of them are hate, envy and jealousy fueled. It's a small(minded) world after all.

Most people in this world are simply uneducated. Instead of looking at successful people and marveling or trying to achieve something similar in their own lives/careers, they try to take you down. It’s the loser mentality they have since birth.

It’s just because losing the Super Bowl is worse than winning it.

It's weird because Otto Graham was universally at the time of his retirement considered the greatest QB of all time. And he lost his share of championship games (while also winning a bunch like Brady mind you). Of course he played before the game and the league really grew into the Giant it is nowadays. And with Montana, well he played before social media and the hot take world were really a thing. He has also had over two decades of retirement to allow his legend to grow and for his blemishes to be mostly forgotten.

Trust me, I agree whole heartedly with your point. The only thing I can maybe think of is that the game is magnified on the Super Bowl, so the record may be symbolic of how well they handle the pressure of being on the game's biggest stage.

Two flaws that clearly get overlooked.......

1.) Most of the time the team on the other side of the field is also a power-house team, so there really should be no shame for the loser.

2.) Brady has a history of coming up big in the Super Bowl, even in defeat. In SB 52 he threw for 500 freaking yards and 3 TDs. In SB 42 many overlook the fact that he DID drive his team down the field in the fourth quarter for a go ahead TD with less than 3 minutes to go.

....and yet guys will get credit for the win and being clutch no matter how they played. Ben Roethlisberger was putrid in his first Super Bowl (against Seattle) and Peyton tried to give away his Super Bowl against the Panthers, but no one looks back at that. They just look at the W's and L's.

It's one thing if Brady sucked in this game. He did enough to win. Unfortunately his defense couldn't stop a nose bleed.
