Schiano to interview for D.C.

The debacle over Schiano's hiring to be the HC at Tennessee may have damaged his reputation a bit. The fact that BB hasn't recently hired a coordinator from outside the organization (McD's return doesn't count), but is interviewing Schiano nevertheless, may help his good friend offset that damage a bit, even if he's not hired.

Of course, this is assuming that Tanguay isn't simply making s**t up again.

Given the strange timing of this (when, exactly, do we think this interview would've been scheduled?) it really feels like a tidbit dropped by Schiano's agent to stir up some attention for his guy after the Tennessee debacle. Why would a Patriots source be on this subject right now - the timing does nothing for them but it garners Schiano some attention during peak media coverage.

I'm not saying that this doesn't have BB's blessing. He does favors for people - think of the A.P. tryout last preseason.

And, who knows. Maybe Schiano is the next DC. That'd be a bit surprising if, like me, you assume that BB has been planning for Patricia's departure for multiple seasons and would have several contingencies ready. Schiano nearly landed as HC at a good football school - not exactly the type of scenario you'd attempt to plan the future of the DC position around.

Good, I wanted him as DC. If he interviews I don't see how he doesn't get the job with all the public praise BB has given him in the past.

Yes, I would be annoyed if Flores isn't willing to be a part of the Patriot organization if he can't be the DC.

I'm going to be annoyed if they hire Sciano and Flores leaves

Because I would like to be able to keep a talented coach and would hope that if Schiano becomes DC they can retain Flores as LB coach

BB may want Flores to get some experience on the other side of the ball. He generally likes his guys to get experience in different areas. I would think he has a plan for Flores and he's on board.

Good point. Flores' only experience with the offensive side of things was as an offensive assistant in 2010.

Interesting sidebar - Flores first began with the Pats in 2004, which means this is his 6th trip to the SB.

Reiss got tweeted the Schiano interviewing for DC question this morning and reframed it by saying Schiano wouldn't need to interview. His opinion is that Schiano could be hired immediately as an assistant HC/position coach.

If BB wants to "season" Flores a bit more on the offensive side of the ball, Schiano could be a placeholder for at least a year of that further grooming.

I like schiano but I think Flores has the biggest potential of ANY coach ever on BB's staff. That includes Matty P and Josh and they are both damn good coaches. He will be a great head coach someday.

That’s usually the extent of it. A short stint on the other side of the ball early on. B.B. yo my knowledge has never shifted a coach to the other side of the ball at a stage anything close to Flores.

This I bet he goes with Patricia

Why ? There is no promotion for him in it. He can either be DC here or with the Lions. I have said it a dozen times but the coaches I am more concerned about losing are LB/ST/.. types like Steve Belichick. For them it makes sense to go somewhere where they could skip a step on the career ladder and be under someone they know well.

So essentially what we have been saying all along.

Of course.

He seems like he is so well rounded on both sides of the game and overcame alot to get the opportunity he has in front of him.
He could be a possible heir to BB with the Belichick kids in coordinator positions.
That may be best case scenario I want to see some innovators at OC can someone please sell me on O'Shea.
Vs going after Deflippo or some young college coaches.

Thats my thought too, Schiano isnt going to be the next head coach and I'm not saying Flores will but Schiano isnt.

You keep talking about bringing in coaches from the outside with their own systems when the fact of the matter is that the Patriots aren’t going to change their offensive or defensive systems for anyone. O’Shea has years in this offensive system and he can step in and run it immediately. Changing it means changing all the reads and terminology etc...., and that makes absolutely no sense at all.

As far as defense goes Schiano is capable of coming in and learning to run their defense, but if the information that Belichick is interviewing Schiano came from Tanguay then it has no credibility, as Tanguay has no credibility.

Flores was already looking to jump ship for a HC job elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with that, but it does mean that you can't count on him being more than a one-and-done DC. That's not exactly optimal. Schiano, if the interest is real, could either take the job, or take some other title and get familiar with things in case Flores makes the jump to HC next year.

While I'm not saying we should hire or not hire him based off on testimony that Penn state situation bothers me.

"In 2016, a Philadelphia court released documents in relation to the Penn State child sex abuse scandal revealing testimony from Mike McQueary stating that Schiano was aware of the abuse by fellow assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.[21] In his testimony, McQueary claimed "only that he had — I can’t remember if it was one night or one morning — but that Greg had come into his office white as a ghost and said he just saw Jerry doing something to a boy in the shower. And that’s it. That’s all he ever told me.”[21] Schiano denied having knowledge of the abuse.[21]"

I mean that hardly sounds like rock solid testimony but if he knew and did nothing I would certain have an issue hiring him. Of course this is a he said, he said situation but it is a question which must be asked.
