2018 NE Offseason

I would have to give up that number 32 slot. You can get a good player there. I want a LB slash pass rusher.

Trading down from #32 for a mid-2nd + mid-3rd probably saves the Pats only about $500k in total 2018 cap costs for rookies.

The difference between #31/32 and the Lions' 2 and 3 is only about $75K.

IOW, salary cap room is not a justifiable reason for trading down.

I’d release; Bennett, Allen, Branch, Harris and McClellin. Saves about 20m

Keep Solder, Lewis and M. Flowers.

Would like to find a vet edge on the cheap. J. Harrison?

Don’t forget we have these guys returning.
3 starters
Cannon
Hightower
Edelman

2 good role players
Mitchell
Valentine
Assuming these players return healthy, this would be a terrific start to
the offseason. They would eliminate a few draft needs.
Top 2 picks from last year
Garcia
Rivers

Heck, maybe Cyrus Jones figured some things out.

I like our D line they play well and compliment each other no one is breaking the bank keep that in tact unless you can get like a DeMarcus Lawrence but he will eat all the cap and we don't need that.
I like Marquis Flowers he is a must bring back and would like to give Eric Lee another year in the system.
James Harrison I can see he's a man among boys I won't doubt his being able to play at a high level even next year bring Deebo back.
I would like to get my hands on some Linebackers who can stack shed but also cover a bit hard to find these guys on the street so a trade for a forgotten or misplaced system guy or high pick or 2 is in order.
Offensive lineman I think Solder retires or moves on to a new team Colts?
Scarnechia has been able to coach up talent so I'd let him go.
Butler unless he has a amazing Superbowl is incredibly replaceable and I wouldn't offer over 5 Million.
Rowe gets a bring back as does Bademosi who most of the games did his job and more.
I'd go after Breshaud Breeland would love to see what Bill can do with him.
Gillesie is rehabilitated or cut I'm going to say he gets another chance because Burkhead and Lewis one is not coming back.
Tight end I'd make Dallas the Tightend in the draft a top priority you can see how crucial a position that is in today's NFL.
It would have to be our first round pick and im fine with that.
Match him with Gronk and watch defensive coordinators cry on the sidelines.
Gost and Allen can stay in their respective roles.
Draft 2 mid round QBs.
Get Rivers and Garcia back draft to get depth at corner back and O line and I'm happy.
PS. Go after Terrelle Pryor will come cheap and be hungry to prove last year didn't define him.
I would say Allen Robinson but he will get top money.
Thoughts?

1.) the best cover linebacker in this draft is Malik Jefferson of Texas. Problem is, I can not see him being on the board at 32.

2.) Pryor needs a lot of coaching. His routes are borderline pathetic, but he has courage and hands. He would be a project, but we could make him s real wide receiver. But we potentially have a lot of bodies at Wide receiver. Edelman, cooks, Mitchell, hogan, Dorset, Britt, maybe amendola.

3.) it is the defensive ends that need to seal the edges. Flowers is borderline ok at it. Hightower and Harrison are good at it. The rest of our team, not so much. One of the reasons I like “the duke” in this draft is he could be good at it, but he needs a year or two in a pro weight room!

Re-sign:

Solder (30 million for three years). I don't think Solder is going to want to move his family and change insurance/doctors for his son. Solder has said that when he told BB of the situation, BB told him to take whatever time he needed, you don't walk away from people like that. I say he stays for a reasonable $10 a year.

Cameron Fleming or Waddle both excellent swing tackles, this might be tough, as both might get better offers elsewhere. Would like to retain one of the two.

Slater. Still a great ST guy, don't think it will cost that much to bring him back.

Amendola. Edelman insurance. another 1 or 2 year deal.

Bademosi, Bolden, King, Ebner- core ST guys would like to keep at least 2 of the 4.

Let walk (and get the comp picks):

Malcolm Butler-just too much $$

Dion Lewis-ditto, plus giving big FA $ to a RB is just not good business.

Draft:

1(32) Sam Hubbard, DE/OLB Ohio St 6'5" 265
Bosaesque player with the length and motor that BB loves on the edge

2 (41) Mark Edwards TE Oklahoma 6'5" 253 One more try at the two TE offense.

2 (64) Sony Michel RB Georgia 5' 11" 212, will make you say Deon who?

3 (96) Josey Jewel ILB Iowa 6'2" 230 Hard nosed ILB right out of the BB system.

4 (128) Lorenzo Carter OLB Georgia 6'5" 242 too much talent to pass up.

Later round picks: (199) Kyle Lauletta QB Richmond 6' 3" 216 (granted may go much higher now after the Senior Bowl). Loves Lacrosse, father was a QB at Navy, BB might not even be able to restrain himself and will take him at #32. I think that Hoyer sticks around another year and the Pats pick up a developmental QB and keep 3 QBs on the roster next year.

Alan Lazard WR Iowa St. 6' 5" 223

I like hubbard but idk if he will be available at 32. I can't see how they would let Lewis go but you never know. Anyway brady can help us add more to that cap space.

This is a great analysis and I love the mock.

Jewel is someone I really like. I need to see him run, but he could help us.

Michael and Carter would definitely help us next year. Hopefully Michael can stay healthy.

Wow, another year in the Superbowl, I have been thinking about how it is hard it is to be objective with the roster when they have so much success. Specifically if they win the Superbowl will we look at things differently?

Most of what I read falls into two camps:
  1. Roster is weak but superior coaching and Tom Brady give the team enough of an edge
  2. Roster is pretty good shape, sprinkle in some players coming back from IR and a few draft picks and we are good to go

I am closer to position 2 although Patricia has done a masterful job putting together a very solid defense. I expect this will be a very slow off season for the Pats; restock at the draft and offer a high level of competition across most positions. Should be interesting to see how the new coordinators work in a new group of young players.

What do you think, does the success hurt objectivity when evaluating the roster?

Why is McCourty listed as an adequate starter? I really question this analysis.

You should certainly question it, it was done by an amateur (me). I was down on McCourty earlier and felt he had lost a step but watching more closely he is still hugely important as a leader and setting up the backend. I bumped up his rating.

The idea of the sheet is not to be exact because it is so subjective, the concept is to look at the overall roster and focus resources.

I am open to any suggestions, send them along.

There has to be something between "Pro Bowl" (which has little value) and "Quality Starter" because you seem down on Cooks, McCourty, Chung and I have a feeling you don't even know who Thuney, Andrews, Mason are

Roster building is difficult to conceptualize to begin with, much less represent graphically in a spreadsheet. I know, I've tried it for probably a dozen seasons and organized just as many different ways. I've found that the depth-chart format, especially when using traditional positional designation categories rather than real-world roles, just isn't detailed enough to ever feel "right".

You've undertaken a daunting task.

There has to be something between "Pro Bowl" (which has little value) and "Quality Starter" because you seem down on Cooks, McCourty, Chung and I have a feeling you don't even know who Thuney, Andrews, Mason are

Ranking the players accurately in terms of their importance is problematic regardless. I definitely agree about the worthlessness of "Pro Bowl", but even "Starter" doesn't have much meaning for most positions since so many key players are used rotationally and situationally, especially on defense. These days, many sites that analyze the cap/free agency situations of teams seem to focus increasingly on the snap counts and production that would need to be replaced if certain players walk or are released, and even on their roles rather than on position to some degree.

Ideally, I think it might be more accurate to represent the players under contract (and free agents) using a method similar to what the Pats use to represent prospects on their draft board - making a "card" for each player listing their age, physical suitability, playing strengths, areas for improvements, the roles they've played, snap counts (which often vary from game-to-game depending on the opponent-specific game plan), etc., and deriving some overall point-based grade. IOW, the "self-scouting" component.

This immediately makes for a messy grid, of course. For instance, with Chung you might need to tack up copies of his card under a few different role headings - MOF "Robber", ILB, Edge defender, slot DB (plus his ST roles) - for all the various things he's done. OTOH, the number of role headings that a guys "card" get tacked up under might be a virtual quantification of his versatility - another valuable trait. And then, of course, you might need to include an honest assessment/projection of what roles a player may (or may not) be able to take on going forward.

It would be a metric crap-tonne of work to do it all like this, but it would provide a feel for the effort and hours that BB and Caserio, et al, put into the roster-building process every off-season.

You nailed it, great post, thank you. There are many, many dimensions that would be evaluated. If I had unlimited resources some other items would be contract amount and length and likely a dozen others. As it sits it is mostly my little toy with 100% subjective ratings across all the areas I can think of; crammed into a single simple minded color. If it helps others good, if other disagree good, it is all good.

Thanks again, as an aside, when I did this for the 2007 team it was all green or bright green, that team was stacked across the board.

Here's hoping that when BB, Brady and company return to New England on Monday, they're bringing SB Trophy #6 with them.

Either way, though, this 2018 NE Off-Season more or less officially begins less than 24 hours later - about 72 hours from now.

In terms of our own roster-tracking and roster building projections, we'll probably know which Pats PS players are under futures contracts by then.

I think McCourty is way more than adequate. He is an all pro in my opinion. He is a rock back there. He is a communication machine that keeps this defense playing as a single cohesive unit.

Take out the first four games where bb was experimenting with a crazy 5-1-5 defense and discovering Gilmore csn’t Play zone and we were the least scored on defense weeks 5 through 16 I think. (In spite of butler really struggling.) And yes, mccourty was a monster part of that.

LOVE this draft. Would love to add DE Ziggy Ansah as a FA.

We need to focus on defense, defense and more defense in this draft. Can't have guys like Roberts, Richards, Lee and Badomosi playing meaningful snaps on defense.
