Pats/Jags Game Plan, Breakdown ...

Speed stunned him. Steps & slide were too short. He actually stopped moving while he was punching and ended up lunging.

Not the greatest set.
Pathetic lack of effort

I haven't read through the whole thread yet, but wanted to ask about this - in the past two games played (Jets week 17 and Titans this past week), the Pats have won the toss and taken the ball, a break from their usual routine to defer receiving the ball on the opening kick-off to the 2nd half. I think both times they did it to try to get up early on the opponent (in week 17 to be able to take starters out after building a big lead, and last week, to put the offensively-challenged Titans in an early hole/grave). It worked against the Jets as I believe we scored a TD on the opening drive and never looked back (although it took until the 2nd quarter to score again). Against the Titans we went 3 and out (or close to it), punted and I think the Titans scored on the ensuing drive, giving them a little hope, although it was short-lived.

For this game, I think the Pats will go back to deferring if they get the choice. I sort of missed that chance to score at the end of the 1st half and beginning of the 2nd they usually have, and during the last game taking the ball didn't work out so well. Thoughts?

Four things I'll be looking for the Patriots to possibly do

  1. Catch Posluzny on the field and go hurry up to keep him there
  2. Use Allen more often (used on 28% of the snaps last week) early, in order to pound the ball and soften up the defense
  3. Put Gronk on the outside and dare the Jaguars to put Ramsey on him
  4. Put Burkhead in the slot on one side, and Amendola in the slot on the other side, and see if the Jags' LBs can cover both

Screens and play action gotta be a big part of our gameplan I would imagine. With our RBs, we need to take advantage of their skills. Now, Cooks and Gronk may not put up big numbers, but the Jags will have to account for them. Hopefully that opens things up underneath.

I only have 1 main key to the game - DAVID ANDREWS.

How well he calls the blocking assignments correctly will determine our fate.

Calling the game is David's greatest attribute, Coughlin's Giants notes will be tougher to implement vs Andrews.

Everyone is talking about how coughlin “owns” the patriots. However, coughlin is not on the sidelines for this one and the players we have are obviously different from 2007 and 2011. Rushing 4 and dropping back into coverage only works if the offensive line is not doing its part, so I feel the game will be determined in the trenches. That may have worked against the 2007 and 2011 offensive lines but this is 2017. Plus we have a way better screen game compared to those years to counter a strong pass rush.

Thanks @BaconGrundleCandy for starting this great thread. A lot of very useful info. As you said, we'll be stealing plenty of stuff from the 49ers game. Target MOF, go slant, outs, and flat routes.

I'm worried about how we'll defend their screens, and the PA they love to run off Fournette. They called the most screens I've ever seen in a game, that I can think of.

More goodies from Lazar:

Jax has given up over 40 points in 2 of their last 4 games...elite defense my arse. Pats win going away.

Interesting. If there was ever a team, game, you wanted to get up early it's Sunday. Jax just isn't built to come from behind or throw much tbh.

I think we defer.

I think we see a few new wrinkles in the passing game with our backs. I wouldn't be surprised to see one take a slant or wheel for a big gain or 6.

Please Nate Solder....Dont let Tommy get killed...Its all on you.

Huge. They'll test Thuney & Andrews inside with CC & Jackson no doubt. We've seen what Jackson can do. Their DLine is priority #1.

I think we win as well. That said their defense might not be the 85 Bears but their very good.

Awsome stuff man. SF game was eye opening for sure.

Jax matches up well against a lot of teams but New England. Brady. Bill. Are a different animal all together.

I have a feeling the coaching staff has something special coming.

And Thank you!

I think we see some pieces moved around this Sunday and expect to attack this line & QB.

Butler crosses face and goes rip. Wise long arm.

Agreed, Cooks has to lay out here

I read someplace that this was very likely wind-related. By taking the ball they get to choose the direction they are playing in the fourth quarter. That was BB's stated reason in the previous game:

-For the second game in a row the Patriots won the toss but elected to take the ball. Belichick said after doing so in the season finale against the Jets that the deteriorating weather was a factor in his choice, as he explained he felt it might get more difficult offensively as the game progressed. The weather was similarly cold for the Titans game with a wind chill of 13 degrees at kickoff and expected to drop. Unlike against the Jets, the Patriots were unable to open the game with a touchdown as they were forced to punt after recording just one first down.
