I believe that since there are five D players at the LOS you can't double team without leaving some guys totally unblocked.

Or if you double team, it leaves the Mike free to shoot the A-gap and disrupt running plays in the backfield.

It almost upsets me to say this, but Hightower would have been the perfect Mike for that alignment. Even if the 3-techs were one-gapping, Hightower is one of the best LBs in the NFL at shooting the gap and shedding blocks. He would have been a nightmare to deal with on all three downs.
