Steelers 1st TD - why was flag picked up?

**** happens including the refs. I saw penalties that Pitt got away with and I grimaced but took it when I saw Patriots get away with some.
Better question is 'how long can the Patriots get by with KVN being out'?. The Patriots don't have anything close, not within a galaxy, to a playmaker LB unless we call Chung a LB. Hard to believe this would be said in preseason but we desperately are missing KVN and his ability to get to runners and cover the short-mid middle etc. And the lack in this position is gonna get us all F'n killed!

I know that things like PI or holding are judgment calls. But there were two Pittsburgh linemen illegally downfield. Not one. Two. And one was about five yards downfield. I mean, it's not really a judgment call, something that crazy obvious. They saw it and threw a flag. How could they possibly pick that up?

Ref: "Whatcha got for the flag?"

Official 1: "Well, there was a lineman downfield."

Ref: "How far?"

Official 1: "Uh....about five yards."

Official 2: "There was actually another guy illegally downfield too."

Ref: "Good grief. How far was THAT guy downfield?"

Official 2: "Only about 2 yards."

Ref: "Ok, so we can ignore that one."

Official 1: "What about the other guy?"

Ref: "Eh............ screw it. Pick the flag up."

I mean, really?

What I don't understand is that the refs saw it and threw the flag. I don't understand why they picked it up.

I still don't know why they picked up that flag for holding on Gronk to end that Carolina game. Refs are a strange breed.

There was only one OL downfield ( the rule states more than one yard) but it was certainly a penalty and I don’t know why they would pick it up.

That one at least has some explanation because a different ref than the one who threw it overruled by saying it was uncatchable which is a good procedure to have because difserent angles of view see different things.
That said the overrule was wrong but at least was a judgment call. This one I can’t fathom a reason to pick up.

If the teams had been reversed this would have been a front page story all week.

how about this? Bryant does have a full extension, hard to tell if it's OPI. But They would call that on Gronk every time.

I had mentioned that Bryant’s TD one handed catch was blatant offensive pass interference, when he clearly grabbed and shoved off the DB with his other arm.

The post is quoting a coach of some level who the steelers fan emailed to. The coach basically told him and all Steelers fans needs to get over it, it's a clear incomplete pass on the James play, and because it's the Patriots people look for reasons why it was a completed catch.

It was picked up as part of the vast anti-Patriot conspiracy. Seriously just a normal screw up.

That would be TWO front page stories this week! The other one won't go away soon enough for me...
I agree. I've had enough of the "bad rule" crap. If the ball hits the ground, moves, and even knocks your hands away it is NOT a catch. Even if playing in the back yard, the object of a pass is to AVOID the ground. I can see limiting replay to half speed, or whatever - the frame by frame rap is a bit much - but the rule about "surviving the ground" actually makes sense. Besides if you insist the ground can not cause incomplete passes we will have an extra 6 or so fumbles a game.

Everyone forgot about Edelman's Superbowl catch!

This doesn't apply to this play, but would it be legal to have an OL go a few yards downfield, turn around and get back onside, and then pass? I could imagine trying to design a flea flicker like that.

Loved how that thread contains about 30 posts all saying there was never any picture of the ball actually hitting the ground, and then one guy post a picture of it.
Then in a later post, someone posts another picture which was clearly taken after the picture with the ball on the ground, pointing to the fact that the receivers hand is under the ball as proof the ball never hit the ground.
Squealer fans are the worst.

It wasn't ineligible receivers.

It was the fact the Steelers had 5 lineman, 5 receivers, 1 RB, and Ben out there. 12 men on the field. The guy wasn't even running off the field, the extra guy was lined up and played the play. No wonder Rogers came free.

I suspect what happened is that one ref counted 12, another said "No, it was 11."

But there were definitely 12 players out there.

There was an ineligible receiver downfield. David DeCastro was 2-3 yards downfield blocking before the pass was thrown.

That being said "Too many men on the field" IS something that the Patriots could have challenged and the Patriots have done so in the past. While I don't doubt you, I find it unlikely that the Pats wouldn't have challenged based on that.
