NFL record: Pats 6 straight games giving up 300+ yards passing...

It's not a great trend, but some of it is situational, regarding the yards given up in the 4th Q.

If you are up two scores with seven minutes to go, you give them all the underneath stuff and they can collect their 80+ yards while taking 5+ minutes to do it.

If the Pats had been up one score, the defense would have been different.

To be clear, I'm not excusing our defense as whole, but some of the 4th quarter numbers in the wins are very much context-dependent.

And yet this team is 4-2, leading the division, and should be 5-1.

Thank God that while the defense is still figuring everything out back there...

Its really wild.... The reason i was so pumped for this season to get started was to see how dominant our defense would be... really thought they had all the talent and experience to just absolutely dominate opponents and continue what they were doing last year

This has been a twilight zone episode for me every single week... its a shame, now whenever we have to punt the ball I just have this bad feeling in the pit of my stomach because of the total lack of confidence I have in the D now... when the offense fails to convert a 3rd down, I just cringe because my gut is that the other team will get at least 3 pts against our D

Its still possible to turn it around, but I'm not holding my breath

2003 Pats gave up 30 to McNair and 34 to Manning (1yd shy of giving up 41). They sucked against good offenses like those...

...until they didn't when they gave up 14 to each of them in the January rematches.

Giving up yards now is fine. Heck, giving up points now is fine. Just get the wins while problems get worked on and hopefully fixed by January.

Honestly it's been so lousy giving up 300 doesn't even seem that bad to me anymore. Oh, gave up 306 yards passing? I guess that's OK.

In past years this was a major influence on patriots defensive yardage stats. They would win 42-17 and give up 300 passing yards, 1/2 of them late in the game when it was out of reach and they played prevent.

I don't think it's very applicable so far this year because other than NO there really haven't been leads big enough to trade yards for time.

Well, during my entire NFL fandom, I've seen excellent secondaries and anemic pass-rushing result in a sucky D; and I've witnessed excellent pass-rushers elevating the play of average-to-middling DBs. So I think I know what I'm talking about.

I like to look at context

Like how Drew Brees had 242 yards when the Pats kicked a FG to go up 36-13 with about 8 minutes to go and Belichick went vanilla.


Or how after Pats kicked a FG to go up 19-14 Winston had 258 yards with 70 seconds no timeouts and had to go 75 yards and Belichick traded yards for time and before someone says Winston had a shot to the endzone, ya he had 1 when there was 3 seconds left.


And Josh McCown well all I can say is Pats were missing 2 of their top 3 CBs. Feel like it might have been a little different if Gilmore was playing and not Bademosi.

The frustrating thing is they look really good in small spurts then give up a big play. I'm just hoping to see some consistency and no wide open receivers.

That's the problem with stats. People read them, become obsessed, and forget what's happening around them. As long as we win games stats are for fantasy players.

When Lombardi #6 is held this February, we'll all be complimenting the coaches on their defensive master-minding with this strategy.

They had so much success tiring out defenses last year that I have to assume this is all a brilliant plan to tire out opposing offenses.
