For years, freaking YEARS, people on here have defended the Pats defense giving up a million yards because at the end of the day they were one of the better defenses in points allowed. How many times did people point out how points are the only stat that matters and only fantasy losers care about yards blah blah blah. Fine ok, there is a point to that.

But now that the Pats defense are the second WORST defense in points allowed, that stat that was said to be the end all be all in determining what is or is not a good defense, those same people are now ranting about how that points don't really matter. ************ it pisses me off.

Points don't matter. Wins matter. Particularly wins at the end of the year....2007 says hi.

People want style points but finding a way to win is all that matters. Sure it helps if the defense allowed less points but as long as they allow one less point than we make is what's most important. Such as last game if our defense allowed their average we would have lost but they only allowed 17 and we won. Our defense usually gets better later on too. Games are their own individual entities, stats and averages help tell a story but have no bearing on the next game.

The 2007 team was one of the best to ever play the game.

For others, the 2007 is not a great team because of the helmet catch. If it fell to the ground, then the team would have been a great team. As it is, they are behind all the SB bowl teams of ours (and some would even include super bowl teams of other franchises.

It's not like the Pats are giving up tons of yards but are holding teams to few points. Pats are ranked 31 out of 32 in points allowed. The defense sucks.
What I dislike most about this defense is the undue pressure it puts on the offense. If it could at least get three turnovers a game between giving up tons of yards (like against New Jersey), that would help immensely.

I'll lose one game by 40 points and win five by one anytime. Losing them all by 5 points is less total points allowed.

The 2014 New England Patriots started the 2014 season 2-2, including an embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in primetime by the score of 41-14. After that game, the football world lost its collective mind with people asking if Tom Brady was washed up. After the game, Bill Belichick said four words that should have chilled Bengals fans to their core: "We're on to Cincinnati." When the Patriots move on, they move on, in that case to the tune of a 41-17 drubbing of the Bengals at Gillette Stadium the next week. The Patriots would then go 10-2 over the course of the rest of the reason, and then went on to win the Super Bowl.

The last time the Chiefs routed the Patriots, well, we all know what happened

Yeah I've been laughing at the fringe people that have been doing this in 2017. Those same people were pounding the hell out of the table about the Pats being the #1 defense in the league last year. What's happened through six weeks this year is shades of 2011. That said, unlike 2011, this defense has the requisite talent to rebound as the season goes on. I, for one, expect it. I'm planning on seeing a different unit come the end of October/beginning of November than whatever that steaming turd was that we've been watching.

I didn't say they weren't a great team.

I will say that none of the early 30-40 point margins helped them to score more than 14 when it counted.

Are you suggesting being at the bottom of the league in yards allowed AND points allowed is not a good predictor of success or lack thereof in the post season?

No, but if they won each game by one point, including the super bowl, your ridiculous scenario could come true.

Plenty of losing teams put up big garbage time runs and then lose close games.

Of course, it's always better to score a ton of points each game, then pitch 19 shutouts, an extreme example like the one you presented.

What I dislike most about this defense is the undue pressure it puts on my heart.

You are either a dense idiot or a troll. Not sure what is worse.

When your defense is ranked 31st in POINTS ALLOWED, it's called:

bend AND break!

It's just that we're lucky to have the GOAT, who can carry this team, even with the defense ****ting themselves all over the field.

Despite everything that went wrong the defense still won them the last two games when the offense just kept stalling and turning the ball over.

Huh? I think you misread me.

My comment was I don't care what the final rankings are.

How they play from here in is what matters and whethervthat is added to great of awful stats from games 1-6 is irrelevant so cumulative season numbers don't mean anything to me, it's what you are at the end.
yes i did misread you

QB, 40 yard dash time, points surrendered

Brees, 4.83, 20
Winston, 4.97, 14
Ryan, 4.89, 7

Smith, 4.7, 42
Watson, 4.66, 33
Newton, 4.59, 33

McCown, 4.64, 17 (age 37)

In no way I’m suggesting this is/was the majority of the problem. However when you run a man coverage defense with big stout DEs (Flowers/Wise) & LBs that lack speed; that could lead to some of the above.
