49ers Shopping NaVorro Bowman [UPDATE: Bowman released; now signed by Raiders]

I watched him some yesterday. I tend to agree with Breer. He seems like an upgrade over Roberts/Harris & could provide some stability. Roberts’ instincts are causing some big runs.

We are giving up 6+ ypc on first down. If Bowman can help fix that he’s worth signing. This defense needs some 3rd and 5+ & let the secondary do the rest.

It's what some of us have been saying about Roberts ever since he was drafted.

What's too bad is that, even as late as the end of the 6th round, there were still better options at LB than lil' Elandon.

LB's drafted after Roberts: Travis Feeney, Stephen Weatherly, Steven Daniels, Trevor Bates, Scooby Wright, Joe Wright, and Tyler Matakeivich.

Roberts is the best of that bunch.

I may be wrong, but thought the offset rule applies to 'guaranteed' money. So it could be for example: if the Pats signed him for $1M salary, and a $3M bonus split out per games active or some such; that he could earn $5M from 49ers, $4M from NEP and end up with $9M instead of 6.

Yes? No
.

AAAAAAND that's why we used to "pay" Miguel the big buck to answer that question. Personally, I don't have a clue. ;)

But I think, whatever money has been paid to Bowman in terms of bonuses plus whatever salary he's got coming based on his being on the 53 after the final cut when all contracts for 2017 become guaranteed, is going to be paid by SF, minus anything the new team pays him. I'm NOT miguel, but I've been reading what he's written for the last 17 years, so that makes me the most dangerous person on the board. Someone with a little bit of knowledge. ;)

I'm not sure if any actual "offset rule" exists, though I suppose there could be one. In any case, if there is one, there must be a lot of leeway since I'm pretty sure I've seen a few variations on the way offsets have been applied.

Bowman is eligible for termination pay and will most likely use it on this contract since it is not particularly probable that he will get another big contract.

While on paper this is the Bowman thread it seems like the 49ers are willing to deal their veteran players for assets:

Cant wait for the first Joe Staley thread to appear..

Pats could use Ray Ray Armstrong in a major way.

Patriots should offer up about 10% of Deatrich Wise and the retirement rights to Jerod Mayo for Joe Staley. That's what is left of the 2007 draft day trade at this point.....

Curious how a 2007 trade becomes %10 of Wise?

The raiders are desperate at this point. I don't know why he would want to go there. Tougher division.

Makes sense for Oakland since they are very close to where he use to play and they are definitely a team that is going to be a contender this year as long as Carr stays healthy.

Also the 49ers trying to trade Carlos Hyde too, I think they are trying to rebuild the whole roster from ground up.

At one point the 49ers had the best LB core in the league.

Might want to ask them about one of their DL players. Yes the raiders are a contender but he would take the difficult road. The chiefs look like the class of the afc west.

Well 10% is subjective, could be as little as 5%. Here's the history --

Pats had two 1st round picks in the 2007 draft. #24 came from Seattle for Deion Branch and was used on Brandon Meriweather. The second was their own, #28, and was traded to the 49ers, which they used to select Staley.

Pats got two picks in return. The easy part - they got the 49ers first round pick in 2008, which after another trade down was used on Jerod Mayo and Shawn Crable.

They also got the 49ers 4th round pick in 2007, which they flipped the next day to Oakland for Randy Moss. Later Moss was traded for a 3rd round pick in 2011 which was used on Ryan Mallet. He was traded after 2014 camp for what turned out to be a 7th round pick in 2016. The Pats then packaged that pick and a 5th rounder to Seattle for a 6th rounder in 2016 and a 4th rounder in 2017. The 2016 pick was used on Devin Lucien, while the 2017 pick was used on Wise. Most of the value of the Wise pick came from the 5th rounder rather than the 7th rounder, which is why I estimated only about 10% of Wise.
