John's daughter, Sloane Stephens, won the US Tennis Open Saturday.. unfortunately John died in a car accident in 2009 ..

John played for the Pats from 1988 to 1992, before he moved on to Green Bay and the Chiefs..

He was rookie of the year in 1988, and went to the pro bowl as well...

An interesting factoid for those who have been watching for a while..

Thanks. Not a tennis fan so I didn't know she was John's daughter.

Sorry to hear he passed. He was fun to watch play. Obviously there are some good athlete genes in that family.

One of the first players I remember as a kid.

That's his kid? Wow. I'm glad something good came from his pathetic life.

He was a friggin tank that ran like a locomotive until he took out that 49ers player. He was never the same after that

Jeff Fuller :(

Agree that Stephens' career, and evidently his life in general, spiraled down from that play. As the saying goes "For all sad words of tongue and pen, The saddest are these, 'It might have been'" (John Greeleaf Whittier).

For those who may not have watched Sloane Stephens win this weekend (many I'm sure), her post-victory celebration was as joyful and heartwarming as it gets. Whatever her dad may or may not have done with his life, missing that was a "might have been" that no parent should have missed.

I was more of a Leonard Russell guy myself. I like hard running RBs who don't rape. Just a personal preference, I guess.

Russell went to Arizona State. I don't think he ever had to ask twice.
He took away a lot of Stephens' carries after entering the league and becoming the Pats' lead back.

Yeah, I actually started a thread the other day right after she won regarding how nice it was that she won in his memory. Then I actually looked up how he was never there for her and how he really wasn't much of a father, etc. I quietly deleted the thread. He had nothing to do with her success whatsoever.

But congratulations to Sloane - - she seems like a very nice kid who has overcome alot. I'll be rooting for her going forward.

.

I remember him running with both arms securing the ball. Didn't know he had turned into a scumbag though.

Nice to hear his daughter is doing well in Tennis. Some good athletic genes.

He played football for Northwestern State in Louisiana, same school as Joe Delaney, who also died young. Delaney though, died trying to rescue three kids from drowning, and died in the process..........

Before it all unraveled, he did get it right to be with her mom, and her and her daughters' is an inspiring and happy story.

I was at his first game (9/4/88), and from his first carry he was clearly a horse.

He and Flutie were the catalysts in an offense and on a team that legitimately could have won that Super Bowl, if not for Berry being stuck on Eason like Kraft ("I too prefer the old logo") is stuck on the flying elvis...until death, apparently.

Did not know the downside of John Stephens, he had a troubled life post pro-football and probably in College..

OTOH Stephens won the N.F.L.’s first Gale Sayers Humanitarian Citation for his work on behalf of the Roxbury (Mass.) Comprehensive Community Health Center. .. there is a lot about Stephens I did not know.

Interesting, revealing article..

Sloane Stephens' dad never got to see her success.
