This trade was really no different than trading down a few picks and adding a 6th round pick. So essentially he is saying moving down a few spots and adding a 6th round pick that gets cut before the season is a blunder

Did you read the article?
He basically said it was a gamble and more work out that not for BB and he always wins so there is reason to criticize him.

"Coach Bill Belichick has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to a periodic roster gaffe. He takes chances, sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t, and ultimately all that matters is winning games. Which they constantly do."

"... when the bulk of the deals work out — and when the Patriots get to the AFC title game every single year for six years and counting — the Patriots can afford to swing and miss from time to time.

It’s a small price to pay for regularly hitting home runs.
"

The headline is pot-stirring clickbait.

The Patriots love to get cast-offs for cheap, and because they cost nothing it doesn't matter if even 9 out of 10 fail, because the 1 good player is still worth more than you spent on all 10 combined.

Teams are afraid of "risky moves" like that, except if it costs nothing there really is no risk, because the cost of failure was nothing.

The cost is criticism by folks like Florio. Insecure coaches won't take that risk. Thank goodness we have a coach who really doesn't care about such popularity contests.

So, clickbait florio is back to his old self now...

What Florio wrote is actually pretty complimentary. Who knows who wrote the headline - NBC Sports editor or production manager, maybe. Coulda been Florio himself, though.

I really doubt there are NFL coaches who think a move is right for their team and won't do it because the media might criticize.
I am sure there are no NFL coaches who live under the impression every move has to work out.

Yeah but nobody but Pats fans is going click on complimentary Patriots piece. Get it?

The sun rose in the east this morning.
An NFL team made a personnel decision that didn't work out they way they hoped.
Where's the news?

It's a calculated risk that is based on probability and economics.

Belichick understood that the player (Kona Ealy) had issues with his performance and Carolina had depth at that position. Thus, it turned into a win for them because they essentially got to move up for free (knowing he had limited reps/??? on their team).

BB essentially got to kick the tires on a player who could play a role, provided he lived up to his ability and could take on the team dynamic. It's worked well sometimes and not on others. BB didn't have to wait for the Panthers to cut him and got prolonged exposure (not to mention exclusivity) to try to integrate/assess him with our system.

BB understands that not all draftees make it to a team and you're luck to get 50% to contribute. Thus he took 2 players for the price of 1 player and 10 positions in the draft. When it's 50/50 chance to make it, doubling your chances makes too much sense to give it a try.

Going through the comments section, it appears that nobody but Pats fans responded to the headline - to object, of course.

I didn't really find anything wrong with the article.

I don't think I'd frame it as a "gaffe", though. They gave up a 5th rd pick and $100k. Woop-de-do. That basically is what they would do if they cut a 5th rd draft choice. Is cutting a 5th rounder in camp considered a roster gaffe?

Just wait for one of those players in those 8 slots to be a stud so we can pretend in hindsight that we all knew it.
