Patriots cut DE Kony Ealy [update: claimed off waivers by Jets]

Huge swing and miss even though it didn't really cost anything. However, seems to me they could have found a more sure thing.
Actually it did. Had we stayed at 64 we probably snag guard dan Feeney instead of dropping back from 72 to take rivers.

Well, the addition of Butler is good, but he's at least 25 lbs heavier and more suited to a DT role, right?

I mean, we know he's played some DE as well just like Guy, but are his responsibilities the same as Ealy would've had?

lbs don't matter
they seem to have a place for Butler and some of it is on the edge
they tried to find a place for Ealy (not all of it on edge) . obviously couldn't

they started with KVN-Brown-Wise-Flowers on the line (w Butler subbing Brown) .
and they were killing DET
imagine Hightower

lots of options beyond DE denomination..

RIP the use of 4-3 DEs here. 3-3-5 baby.

3-3-5 DE: Flowers, Guy, Wise, Butler
DT: Branch, Brown, Valentine
OLB: Hightower, McCellin, Langi

Van Noy can also play OLB/Edge. And McLellin hasn't practiced since I don't know when.

Rivera said something along the lines of, " he will be good if he listens to the coaches" after they traded him. He missed the first day or two of camp and then made a somewhat odd comment when asked why, "him and Bill had a thing" or something. If I had to guess I would say he wanted to one thing and they wanted him to do another and from the looks of it he wasn't great at either.

How is moving down 8 spots in the draft a " huge swing ?"

After two pretty good games back to back, I'm surprised. I'd be even more surprised if another player or two aren't added before the season starts.

I would say it's a bigger swing and a miss due to having no bodies at the position than it was to move a few spots back. Would be surprised if they don't swing a Hicks/Ayers type trade for depth.

8 spots in the 2nd round was worth a shot at this guy. He was the perfect candidate - former 2nd round pick with good measurables in a contract year. He fit the mold of a Mark Anderson, Andre Carter, Akiem Hicks signing/one-year rental - All guys who went on to cash in on huge contracts.

It's a disappointment but it was never a big move so it isn't a big swing and miss. Just a miss.

I was never excited about Ealy, and I always thought he could be cut, but for him not even to make it to September at the weakest position on the team (by far) is pathetic.
Not going to lie I was somewhat excited when we swung that trade. It was a low risk relatively high reward type move. Ended up being a bigger risk to cut him after Nink retired which makes his failure he more disappointing.
