You're right. I was just thinking about Langi while I was waiting for you quote to come up. If he doesn't make the final 53, there is no way he makes it to the PS. AND beyond our current UDFA class, we have 2 likely unfortunate losses from last year's UDFA class, in Lucien and Foster who are like to get picked up.

Let's not forget the 3rd alternative beyond keeping and waiving player: trades. I wouldn't be surprised to see a flurry of pre-cutdown trades at overstocked positions like WR, either toward a position with less depth (DE?) or more likely for conditional draft picks.

While I'm on the subject...I hate myself for saying it, but I could picture Dion Lewis being traded. As electric as he can be, Burkhead + White + Lewis seems like a positional overload. Somebody would have to be inactive each game.

Excellent reminder about trades. Have we seen any other team team-build via trades like the Patriots have? I'm not sure it's a common approach in the NFL.

No idea what will happen, but that's a good problem to have. :)

Too valuable.

Lewis is traded only if DJ flashes in TC.

If White goes down DLew is the passing back.

If either Gillislee or Rex go down DLew is the #2Rb

Plus with his injury history I'm not sure how much he would net

I think the volume is definitely outside the norm. I once tracked down all of the instances of one particular kind of trade -- trading away current picks for better future picks -- and it turned out that Belichick was pretty much the only GM to do it at all. In the last couple of years he seems to have shifted away from that approach toward acquiring more veterans, but the level of trade activity is still through the roof.

I hope you're right, I really like Lewis and injuries to RBs are inevitable. But my hunch is that Burkhead is going to be very active in the passing game, making Lewis the 3rd string receiving back.

If Slater isn't ready to start the season, that may buy Lucien a reprieve.
Lucien is a top special teamer?

Slater has nothing to do with the WR position.

No doubt Rex can catch the ball.

Unless BB can get higher than a 4th rounder I don't see BB tempting date by moving him

With that said when it comes to predicting when BB makes a move I am never right

IMHO, it is desirable to have a backup inactive.

I wanted to add that Gilmore's reps vs. Robinson were flat out awesome. His initial press technique to re-route him & athleticism to be on him like glue was something to see.

You can tell why BB wanted Sherman if the rumors are true. They are so similar how they work the sideline (and they look similar lol).

No doubt Gilmore's going to erase big #1 X WRs. BB turned Talib from an inconsistent mess to & elite press CB & got another year of Revis out of a down year in tampa. BB will put Gilmore in a position to breakout Talib style.

ONE MONTH AHHH

Trades during camp seem unlikely. Everybody knows there will be lots of good players getting cut, so there is little incentive to spend resources when players will soon be available for free.

The trading deadline is the day after the end of Week-8 games - two weeks after PUP and IR-Return players are eligible to return to practice.

I don't think I'm overstating this but on a team that was particularly stacked going into TC, this year's crop of UDFA's could be one of the best they ever had. AButler, Moore, Carr, Hollister, etc have all caught people's eye during camp. Plus impressive 2nd year UDFA's like Lucien and Foster. The shame of it is that so many will have to be let go. The shark will be circling the Pats when cuts are finally made

We should start a pool with just how many Pats cuts will wind up on OTHER teams' 53 man rosters after the September cuts.

My pick is 3

Won't help us this year but it would be nice if the NFL* could come up with a few roster spots for rookies drafted say 5th round and below and UDFAs.

This gives players most in need of development, a chance to do so, and with their original teams, and their salaries are relatively low.

IIRC modest pre-cutdown trades to circumvent the waiver wire are pretty common. Either player-for-player with bubble guys at different positions, or picks conditional on the player making the team.

EDIT: Bizarrely, the first example of a late camp trade that came to my mind was Le Kevin Smith 8 years ago. o_O But there have been plenty of others, notably Logan Mankins.

Oh, absolutely. Having 3 quality receiving backs is desirable and has value. The only question is whether it's more valuable than a potential alternative.

I wonder how much of it is teams recognizing that this usually ends badly for them.

Garoppolo says "Probably not." ;)

Perhaps some kind of practice squad?:D

I would be willing to do some trade but they would be fairly minor. I would hate to lose our advantage and depth too much when we are such a super bowl favorite.

I would not trade Lewis cause injuries happen so much to RBs. A few trade I'd do would be maybe Cyrus Jones for a pick (If you believe enough in Moore) Or I would trade Hogan if you believe enough in Carr or Lucien cause we can be okay without him even if they don't work out.

I tend to fall in the middle of your opinion and the opinion of those who claim that he'll be our lead back, which are obviously two polar opposite beliefs.

I think BB went all out in terms of trying to make sure that we'd have plenty of versatility and depth this year, which certainly hadn't been the case recently. I think injuries usually sort these types of positional "problems" out, but if everyone somehow remains healthy, it will be interesting to see how the inactives are split. I'd have to imagine that you're correct that it would be Lewis more often than not, but there's also a strong part of me that believes he'll be our main KO returner. Certainly one of the great storylines to follow.
