Pats sign former Jet LB David Harris

Yeah that's what they did. Apparently they do that with all their gameday threads. So I was kinda surprised when no Saints fan at least made a backup of the thread and posted it somewhere.

Oh you can find game day threads on there. Just not that one ;)

FWIW, some David Harris stats.

Defensive Snaps - % - ST snaps - %
2016 -- 899 --- 94% --- 86 -- 9%
2015 -- 969 --- 92% --- 82 -- 8%

2013 - 1100 -- 99.8% -- 84 -- 8%
2012 - 1062 -- 99.5% -- 134 - 13%

Year - Sacks - Tackles - Assists - Combined

2007 -- 5.0 ----- 90 ------ 37 ------- 127
Avg. --- 3.5 ----- 71 ------- 38 ------- 109

- 154 games played with 147 starts; has only missed six games in ten seasons. Missed a mid-October game last year due to a hamstring injury, ending a streak of 121 consecutive starts. The only other games he has ever missed were five in 2008.

- Career totals: 35 sacks, 30 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles, 6 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries. Also 2 sacks, a 58-yard pick, and 55 combined tackles in six playoff games (4-2).

- 2016 was only the second time Harris was not in on any fumbles, and was a career low in sacks. The 62 tackles were the lowest since 2008 (when he missed five games) and the 94 combined tackles were the lowest since 2011.

So definitely not a camp body. That guaranteed $$ probably means he's here for the long haul.

Camp body? He's probably gonna lead the team in tackles.

Nice pick up. Led jets* in tackles and what ever he has left should be adequate enough. Having a realistic chance of being a Champion should be motivation enough to excel. You know he will be Extra Jacked twice a year just to remind them.

I'm waiting for Miquel to give us the final details on the deal. It looks like a 2 year deal for $2.5MM/yr plus about $800K in incentives/yr, with $1.5MM guaranteed in his first year. Sounds like very reasonable money for a proven vet who at best will be starter, and at worst will be cut and cost us $1.5MM in cap space. Definitely a solid risk/reward equation.

At his best David Harris was Lavonte David before Lavonte David. He was an undersized speed ILB who could cover sideline to sideline. What he is now, we will only know when they start to play preseason games. Me I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

I don't think the issue will be about Harris' own ability, but rather whether guys like Roberts, McClellan, VanNoy, or Freeney can now outplay him.

At his best, he can be a guy that liberates Hightower to be more of a pressure guy on the edge. He can limit some of Hightower's snaps, and can be additional LB depth in the rotation. I have always thought Harris was decent in coverage, so will likely be an upgrade in that area.....unless of course, some of the other guys. like Robers, have improved in that area. So now LB has become a real competition spot. Orignally I had hopedt Langi might develop into that coverage LB we could put on TE's and RB's, but who knows how fast he can pick up the system.

BTW- Thanks for the thread from the Jets superbowl observations. Priceless reading.

This chart is misleading anyway. When all is said and done the sum of the cap hits for every player is equal to the sum of the cash paid. The Patriots will spend to the cap (they roll money over, but they never let it go away), so that means over the long run, the Patriots spend EXACTLY what most of the teams spend.

It is true the Patriots borrow against future caps less often than some teams and have less dead money than some teams -- but the long run total spent is almost exactly the same as everyone else.

Some of us use the convenience of listing positions.

So, for me, we have 3 locks: Hightower, Van Noy and Harris.

Roberts was on the bubble before. I think that he is even more vulnerable now. Roberts is not the top special teamer that McClellan or Freeny is. So, IF Roberts was making it before as the last linebacker, it is quite possible that he will now not have roster spot.

And yes, the effect is that Harris would take the roster spot that Roberts was going to take.

Disagree completely, I think Roberts is a lock and McClellin, Ninkovich, Freeney, and Van Noy are fighting for jobs.

Well Harris could allow them to use Hightower as a pass rusher more.

Could see something like this in certain passing situations

This was a shoe we were all waiting to fall, but nice to know Belichick felt the same way. Harris is still a very good linebacker, even if he's not the every down guy he was in previous years.

I wouldn't call him undersized.
Perhaps a little in our old 34 (but he is bruschi size) but he is kind of prototypical size MLB/ilb in the NFL.

Anything that gets HT rushing the passer more is a very good thing.

Is he the guy who picked Brady in the playoffs game?
