Sorry meant 90 no idea why I wrote practice field

Thompson was second only to Melifonwu (152.6, 3.3 standard deviations above NFL average) in the entire draft 2017 class at any position.

FWIW, there are only a couple of other NFL players that are also more than three standard deviations above the average NFL player on their Combine performance.

Melifonwu (drafted in Round 2) joins the select company of J.J. Watt, Calvin Johnson, Evan Mathis, and Lane Johnson.

Three Sigma Athlete

(You can think of SPARQ as the athletic equivalent of IQ - an "average" NFL player scores 100, and 15 reflects one standard deviation).

Highlighting Every NFL Team's Best UDFA Signing

The New England Patriots win at everything, including the acquisition of top undrafted free agents.

The organization decided to take a different path in this year's attempt to supplement a Super Bowl roster. It did so by trading draft picks for multiple talented veterans, such as wide receiver Brandin Cooks, defensive end Kony Ealy and tight end Dwayne Allen.

When it was all said and done, the Patriots only drafted four players. In an attempt to offset such a small group, the franchise signed a monster free-agent class. Not only did New England acquire a large quantity with 19 signees, but it found quality too.

More at the link. It's a couple of weeks old but I just found it and it's a writer I like.

Still rooting for Max Rich and DJ Killings

He was a player I zeroed in on the week of the draft as a perfect fit here for his special team prowess. He also happens to be a phenomenal athlete. I'd be curious to see if he can play corner, given his agility numbers. Excited to watch him in the preseason!

You sure did. Great catch.
But he will have to do much more than ST to break this roster.
Even PS will be a hard battle for him.
At least he should be safe on passing waivers..

Patriots have waived-injured Corey Vereen and signed CB Will Likely (Maryland). Will he make the team? Not ...

Too bad for Vereen. I liked his game (very reminiscent of Nink), but he was an underwhelming athlete. Surprised Likely hadn't been signed already. He was a favorite of many in the draft forum. Interesting news. Thanks for sharing!

Only because I couldn't resist the joke. (I bet he's heard them all already, though.)

Came here to post about Likely. He went undrafted because of incredibly small stature (5'7) and a torn ACL his senior year.

Past that, this kid is a legit cover corner. He was impressive vs. Michael Thomas and is physical in the run game for such a small CB. Had him as a mid round guy.

2017 NFL Draft Profile: William Likely

DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 6-7
SOURCES TELL US
"Stick that guy in a 6-foot body and he's probably the first cornerback off the board this year. He's got everything you want other than NFL size. He's a really good football player but it's going to be hard to bang the table for a 5-foot-7 cornerback who is coming off of an ACL tear." -- AFC Director of College Scouting

BOTTOM LINE
It is impossible to ignore Likely's diminutive stature and it's impossible to ignore the fact that he's having to come back from an ACL tear. It's equally impossible to ignore his elite quickness and hyper-competitive nature. His lack of size will put a ceiling on his draft stock, but Likely is talented enough to become a slot corner in the NFL. His ability to take over return duties should add value for a player who can make a team better regardless of what the tape measure says.

Another great UDFA signing & a player to watch. Butler's success story & BB's objectivity in playing the best players is paying dividends in regards to UDFAs.

Big Likely fan!!! Woohoo!

No injury, a few inches and hes a top 50 pick and some think higher.

This guy can play. He's small but a fighter. He had 16.5 TFL & over 220 tackles. He'll have trouble against a certain type, just like in the passing game but he wraps up.

Very quick feet, quick overall. Like Butler, Ryan and others competes for everything.

He can contribute on ST's, in the return game and in the slot.

Great pick up. I have a feeling a few of these UDFA'S will be key contributors in a few years.

Ironically Vereen's injury opens door for Likely unlikely coming back from ACL
(it will be interesting to see if Pats keep Vereen on IR)

See this video about his unlikely comeback in time for draft:

And enjoy the highlights. The crowded DB room probably won't.
(top returner, gunner, and a DB w everything but the hight..)

Likely was a top 3 return man in college ball. If he's going to sniff the roster, it will be with that in mind.

I liked him in 16 to come out early, but stuck around and lost some money. Could see an IR season for him.

We got him to make Butler feel less short.
