If he makes the team, he will likely need to beat out Coleman as the backup nickel.
Given the little that Coleman played in the second half of the season, that shouldn't be too hard. I'm not sure I'd even consider Coleman the incumbent to be honest. Whoever we keep should probably be based on upside for 2018 as Butler will likely be gone and, hopefully, we won't need a ton of plays from our bottom CB behind the top three and Cyrus Jones.

We might keep just 5 CB's next season if J.Jones can make another jump forward. He showed last year that he has some potential to be more than just a special teamer.
J Jones has GREAT speed and is a good tackler even though he's small. Love that guy. Loved the signing last year and didn't understand why he wasn't drafted.

This is supposedly the day that the Patriots officially announce the udfas that they
have signed.

While the number stays the same there are two changes in UDFA signings to the ones reported. LB Anthony Williams out, LB Brooks Ellis in. CB DJ Dean out, OT Andrew Jelks in (first reported as tryout).

Very close on SPARQ scores ...

Langi ... 121.1 (at 6015/251)
Roberts ... 123.3 (at 5113/234)

Interestingly, Trevor Bates (6010/245) also had a 123.3 SPARQ in 2016.

The big "winner" on SPARQ among the Pat's UDFA class is Jason Thompson (FS, Utah) with a SPARQ of 144 (= 2.7 standard deviations above NFL average at that position). Thompson was second only to Melifonwu (152.6, 3.3 standard deviations above NFL average) in the entire draft 2017 class at any position. Thompson's SPARQ was 4th highest in the past three drafts, with only CB Byron Jones (150.8, 2015) and WR Moritz Boehringer (Swabisch Hall, 146.1, 2016) between Thompson and Melifonwu.

Another in interesting factoid - the top three CB SPARQ score in 2015 were Byron Jones, Darryl Roberts and Eric Rowe (Justin Coleman was 14th).

This is the first time I've ever heard of SPARQ.

Not surprisingly Ellis featured in top 30 3-cone times of all players at Combine. Strangely enough he's the only player from that list currently on Patriots (shined at both shuttles as well and had average 40 yet some scouts were complaining about his functional speed in NFL?..)

Full quote about Ellis from above article (to save us some time):
Brooks Ellis, Arkansas, 6-foot-2, 240 pounds: The top tackler for the Razorbacks over the course of the last two seasons, Ellis is touted as a smart, reliable, technician who happens to have three years of experience in the kicking game and submitted one of the quickest three-cone times among linebackers at the combine (6.8 seconds). A pre-med student, Ellis posted a 3.8 GPA and traveled to Belize with some of his biology classmates in the summer leading up to his final collegiate season.
