What Volin fails to mention is he's never gonna make it to PS (with all this competition). They lost KGH and LeBlanc last year and then never gambled on DJ Foster even though he was inactive biggest part of the season. So Langi making the 53 would not be a bad bet at all..
He could get to practice squad.
KGh was a drafted player and Leblanc had a good camp but more importantly a great eeek in joint practices with the team they signed him. Foster was kept because Lewis was on pup.
Not many players don't make it to ps (but a lot more than used to) especially udfas.

Don't sleep on Adam Butler, DL, Vanderbilt
6'4, 293, 5.23/1.82, 7.51

Doesn't come across as most athletic player but he had better 3-cone than any DT at Combine (the closest was Tanzel Smart who was connected to Patriots) and very competitive 10y. A bit undersized he reminds me of Anthony Johnson (who was much more undersized) with his feisty play, motor and versatility along the line. He is not the missile like Easly but seems to be the next one in search of interior rushing DT.

I stumbled across him watching Cunningham's tapes. There was a funny guy making all kinds of plays. When I looked it up it was Butler.

Here is his game vs Tenn. (look f.e. at 10:20 for one of his great plays. Note that is late in 4th Q after playing whole game, so that can tell you a lot about his motor.)

Look at this tape vs. Florida and you won't believe this guy wasn't taken much earlier.
He doesn't sleep at starts of the games either. Look at Butler's (#69) play f.e. at 0:15 & 0:35 - two big TFLs in first 3 min, and then 2 sacks at 2:22 and 2:55:

Let's add two clips from Loyko from Tenn game for those not watchig 10 min tape:

BTW - he also played OG . and he looks like one too..

Wonderful UDFA pickup.

from Riess' article:
Pats guarantee undrafted Harvey Langi $115K, which is more than late picks

quote:
Langi, who took a pre-draft visit to the Patriots, had about 12 teams interested in signing him to a contract after the draft. He was projected to be picked in the fourth to fifth round of the draft.

The 6-foot-1 7/8 and 251-pound Langi finished his college career by being named MVP of the Poinsettia Bowl after making 16 tackles.

The Patriots' spending on undrafted free agents is notable not just because of their small draft class, but also because all NFL teams are limited to paying out a total of $98,340 in signing bonus money to undrafted free agents. But by guaranteeing a significant portion of a player's base salary, clubs can be more aggressive in pursuing some desired targets.

From what I've seen reported, the Pats appear to have spent between $60k-$65k in signing bonuses and something over $220k in guarantees so far.

fleming and butler are RFAs doubt definition they don't have guarantees. Van noy was a trade so guaranteed stayed in Detroit.

My point is guaranteeing 115k is under no circumstances hand writing in the wall to a veteran that his job is in jeopardy.

RFA salaries are not guaranteed. If you're not convinced, read Miguel's stuff at patscap or overthecap.

When a player is traded, only the signing bonus stays on the books of the original team. The team that gets him in the trade assumes all other contract terms including salary guarantees, roster/workout bonuses, option years, etc.

Right. I was responding to a post that said those players don't have guaranteed money by explaining why.

I wonder how much if any input Van Noy had on Langi.

Van Noy's BYU career ended in 2013. Langi's began in 2014. So, they didn't cross paths at practice. Maybe a character reference offered in passing conversation?

On a side note you know BB talked to Flowers about Wise.

The Patriots did "gamble" on Foster. He was released on 11/28 and signed to the PS on 11/30. He was re-signed to the main roster on 12/3..

I can remember when he was cut many people thought he'd get picked up and were surprised when he wasn't.

That being said, i still agree with the overall message.

He didn't see the field in 13' as a freshman but I thought he was on the team.

Langi was a freshman RB at Utah in 2011 before going on his Mormon mission. He returned to Utah and switched to defense for the 2013 season before moving to BYU in 2014.

The most interesting thing about watching the Butler tape, is that Butler was more impressive to me than Cunningham, who kept missing tackles. That being said, Butler can run for a big man and is motor is unquestioned. Looks like he'll be another guy who will get picked up by another team when the Pats let him go.

Langi has the look of someone who can make an instant impact on ST's and eventually find a place at LB when Van Noy leaves at the end of this year.

Huge log jam at TE now, with about 5 guys fighting to be #3

The S from Richmond looks to have a shot as well to make an NFL team, if there is no room here. ST's jobs will have some real competition in TC

Thanks. Completely escaped me.
Went to look it up in the great COMBINED thread. Then my calendar.
It was the week my father died..

Let's hope not...unless his strengths don't translate in NE's system

So far, I like what I see
