nfl Top 100 players of 2017

I thought so at first. Then I realized that with 32 teams in the league every time should only have ~3 players in the top 100. At least if talent was truly evenly distributed throughout the league.

Obviously for the Patriots Brady and Gronk are going to be toward the top. So having another 2 in the 90s and the Patriots are already above average. McCourty should also be in there somewhere I expect.

I'm not sure they will rank Gronk high. He missed a lot of time.

If they are saying its ok to rank a player high even though they missed a ton of time then ok.

Hightower is often injured. He's a very good player. Top 100 is nothing to sneeze at. He'd be higher if he ever played a full season.

I wonder how many GMs would have similar opinions to the players?

Many here seem to feel that a guy like Butler is one of the top CBs in the game. Some even have him in the top 1-2. Obviously, the players who voted here disagree.

Also, Hightower at #94 seems a bit low, particularly for those who predicted 14+ million a year for him. One nameless, but very generous poster even went as far to predict that he'd receive "Von Miller money," in the ballpark of 16+ million a year.

Are the rest of the NFL players severely undervaluing our players, or are most here severely overvaluing them? My guess is something in the middle, with a nudge toward the latter.

A ranking in the 90s indicates that both Butler and Hightower would be considered the 3rd to maybe 4th best player on an average team. And Gronk, Brady, and McCourty at the very least are probably going to be rated higher on the Patriots.

Anyone who says Butler is the top 1-2 CB in the league is flat out wrong. BB pretty clearly disagrees with you.

And saying that Hightower was predicted to get 14m+ as an argument is pretty silly considering he didn't even get 10m.

From last year

87: Julian Edelman
48: Chandler Jones
9: Rob Gronkowski
2: Tom Brady

No love for Devin McCourty it seems

The linebackers that will be ranked over Hightower are Kuechly (arguably the best non-QB player in the league), Lee, Wagner, Alexander, and maybe but probably not Mosely and Lavonte David. Seems about right to me. I'd put Hightower with Lee and Wagner but his tendency to miss several important games each year may downgrade him.

At corner, I'd rank Harris, Sherman, Peters, Talib, and Peterson above Butler without blinking and would put him in the next tier with guys like Xavier Rhodes (who probably belongs in the first tier), Vontae Davis, Hayward, and Gilmore. There's a lot of players in the NFL, you end up at 100 pretty quickly.

Adrian Peterson is ranked and he played three games, so i assume he is ranked.

Fans will exagerate, the direction will vary on the current trend of the team.

If they're winning, they're great, best in the NFL

If they're losing, horrible, our players wouldnt even crack the Browns roster.

Here, is the first case, only we haven't had a downwards trend in awhile, so we tend to keep the "we are great, everyone ia great" going for years.

That being said, i think the NFL do tend to undervaluate our players a bit, "it's bill's scheme" they use as an argument, and if I'm being honest, they aren't totally wrong

The players appreciate it.

I think it's just scale of teams. There are a lot of NFL players. Consider that there are 22 starters per team, and 32 teams in the league. That's over 700 starters alone; being voted into the Top 100 puts you in the top 15 percent of NFL starters.

There are another 1,100 non-special teamers in the NFL, so being Top 100 puts you in the top six percent of players on an NFL roster at any given time. Then add guys who are on IR and you probably get another 100 or so in any given year, including some who would probably end up in the Top 100, like Gronk, so you're really talking top five percent. And a kicker like Vinatieri is likely to make the Top 100 as well.

Brady
Gronkowski
Edelman
McCourty
Hightower
Butler

Those are our likely top 100 players.

It'll be interesting comparing the players' top 100 vs PFF's top 100 (I think PFF is the most accurate source when it comes to recognizing players outside of the sexy stats, eg. someone like Brandon Graham is ranked much closer to what he is in PFF as they account for QB pressures, knockdowns, hits, etc.)

With the draft over now I suppose we've reached the part of the off season where endless meaningless lists will be coming out every day to anger fan bases.
And, yet, fans will be drawn to them like moths to a flame...clicking on them...linking to them...being aggrieved by them...

Hard to believe edelman can't get into the top 100. His production over the last 4 years has been consistently top notch. Besides hes also one of the leagues best punt returners

About 20 years ago, the media discovered there is no surer way to get attention and people talking than to create one of these little "lists". It works every time.
