Right and the NFL entitles each team to the bye week because there is a good reason for it. There are obvious benefits to each team to letting their bodies extended recovery time. So ya, maybe an older vet who plays a high % of snaps could use an extra bye week to allow for the double benefit of reducing the overall nubmer of hits taken but also providing another chance for extended body recovery.
Obviously other teams wouldn't do this because they need player X to win. In this respect the Patriots find themselves in a position of luxury because they can afford to sit Brady for a game and STILL put out a competitive team out on the field. After all, even though we chant 'one game at a time' the end goal always has to be Minnesota.
Keep in mind this thread was started with the idea (that has turned out to be false) that the suggested game to sit would be the Thursday night game that was part of the 5 road games in 6 weeks due to the obvious fatigue factors that play into a short week. *The Thursday Night game is NOT part of this 5 road game stretch which in my opinion would have made this a better argument. Who knows, maybe it would still be a good idea to sit Brady for the Thursday nighter even though it's not part of that tough stretch.
Just to be clear by no means am I suggesting that Jimmy is better than Brady or his equal. If this topic of resting Brady were to be discussed in any year though it would certainly be this year of all years because.........
1.) Brady's age
2.) The watered down competition within the AFC
3.) The insane talent on the team.
I've heard some people joke about how Gronk shouldn't play until at least week 10 so that we have him for the playoffs. That sounds silly, too, and I don't agree with it but it does make a little sense when you have a team that has Super Bowl aspirations and is good enough to get through the regular season with him. I know, I know, we won a Super Bowl without him too, but I certainly would prefer he paly in any future Super bowls that we are in.
