I have this hunch that NE "fleeced" (as many have put it) NO in the Cooks trade with the understanding some of those picks come back if Butler and NO work out a contract and they can make a trade, essentially making it a Cooks-Butler trade

I don't a team who traded a guy because he was causing friction with his team, for a 1st round pick plus, who wants a huge contract that th Pats don't give, and is only under contact for two years, as getting fleeced.

Yep. Even a normal person making really good money over a 40 year career is looking at $3-$4M in their lifetime. Obviously they're welcome to make whatever choice they want to for whatever reason, but supporting themselves, their kids and their grandkids shouldn't be a reason unless they just blow it. Even after taxes, one year at the pittance of $10M a year is more than I, and most here, will make in a lifetime.

As I said, unless he's keeping the money in a mattress, the extra millions will make no difference. You're just saying "100k per year for X years!" and that's not how banking, investing, or finance work. If he can't stretch $40M, he won't stretch $50M. Jeez.

Anyway, as I threw in an edit, it's all good. We just disagree on the importance of non-monetary considerations.

And Long already knew he wasn't coming back, IMHO.

Oh, please. His family will be ridiculously financially secure regardless. There are other considerations, such as whether or not he wants to move, pull his kids out of school, what his wife wants, work satisfaction, coaching, teammates, locker room, championships, local endorsements ... stop pretending like taking a better job for $2M less a year will all of a sudden make him not rich.

Quick question: if you were already financially secure, would you uproot your family and leave a job you love for one you hate solely for more money?

There's a lot of assumptions there. I've never gotten the impression that High "loves" it here, nor would I say that living as a pro athlete in NYC is something universally seen as bad. We may hate and mock the Rats, but that's just us being fans.

And I presume you're aware that a large percentage of pro athletes are broke or worse about 10 years or so after they've retired, right? I'm not even mentioning the enormous risks and health issues that practically all of them suffer. Doesn't that factor in?
