Patriots trade for WR Brandin Cooks (NO BUTLER INVOLVED). Gave up 1st & 3rd rounder for Cooks + 4th

Speaking only theoretically here: Let's say BB kept the first-rounder and used it on a young stud linebacker who would start for the next five years, then found a running back with the other pick who supplanted Blount, or a promising OT. I'm not anti-Cooks by any stretch, but I'd rather have that. Of course, we'll never know and draft choices are a crapshoot anyway.

See the above. Your point about 103 vs. 118 picks is a valid one and I do hope Cooks is the big difference maker everone expects.

He also could have drafted another dominque Easley at 32. Take the sure thing. Cooks is an emerging superstar.

I'll let BB answer that.....

"I don't see any stud linebackers in that slot. ... excuse me a minute. Yes, Nick what's up? Oh Danta's on the line. I gotta go...stud LB on the other line. Oh the trade. question .... I do what's best for the team".

Cooks is a lot like Branch, if Branch was blazing fast and could score from anywhere on the field. Branch was super quick....that is basically how he made his living.

personally I think BB just gave SP a favor for cooks knowing how he got his a@@ Kicked by godell. Cooks it worth it, but what BB gave SP was unusual. Like something a friend woud do.

you don't think Cooks is worth pick 32?..The guy is a top 12 WR

hes worth a #1 pick to me, because hes a proven #1 threat to all teams. Everyone double teamed cooks in our games and he still got loose. Watch the footage. You will rarely see just one guy watching or covering cooks .
I just think BB might have added more than with another deal as a kindness.
Im thining the +4th, and maybe who to draft for defence. I knew cooks was going to NE. SP would not out bid a friend unless it was crazy good, like he Fd Seattle with the JG trade.

"Sure thing" also pertains to the fact that Cooks has but one more year left on that contract and wants to get paid.

A first round pick would be under contract for 5 years.

That is for sure.

2 years for less than $10M. Bargain. Years 3,4,5 . . . whatever. Also, those years are not "for sure", he could have been cut by then.

I know he got caught up in a scheme issue and wasn't playing great but Akiem Hicks for a 5th rounder was a gift by Payton to BB

There's also a team option.

Yes and the scary thing is cooks is faster than a prime Deion Branch.

Not doubt, but Cooks isn't going to help that issue if he's gone in 2 years if BB doesn't keep him at over $16MM./yr That's ASSUMING he's successful over the next 2 years.

Remember as it stand right now, this team won't have a first round pick 2 years in a row, and even though it's not much of a first round pick, our best pick over 2 seasons is going be Cyrus Jones at #60. That is NOT how you build through the draft for long term success.

We need help on defense in a draft that is deep EXACTLY where we need help. Now we will have little in the way of draft capital to take advantage of this opportunity, all for a WR who is likely to be gone in 2 years.

A couple things.

First, this trade isn't that much different than moving a pick in the 40s to get one year of a much older Dillon. Hindsight bias granted, I doubt anyone would complain about that now.

More importantly, this isn't about score *more* points or tallying *more* yards, it is about making the offense matchup proof. Yes, the OL struggled against Hou and Atl, but in both cases defenses were able to easily force NE out of their comfort zone even if you ignore the pass pro. Guys weren't getting open when Brady wanted them open. In Atlanta's case we are talking about an objectively bad unit that got by entirely with scheme.

There is little doubt that Gronk would have made things easier, but no one should be surprised that NE wants extra protection.

Lastly, the lack of a first rounder last year is more than offset by finding three starting caliber players, including one immediate starter, and another who honed out a role for year one and beyond. That is a terrific draft even with no first rounder and even if Cyrus is a total washout.

I'm gonna have so much fun watching our offenses dismantle defenses next year. I predict defenses will look helpless against our O Next year. Way too many weapons to defend against.

Cooks is lightning fast, and he goes after the ball. He's going to open the offense up for everyone. I'm glad they didn't have to give up Butler for him but would have made the deal because Of Butlers contract situation and Cooks age. Cook already has great numbers but he's just about to hit his stride imo, and he's going to have monster seasons the next couple of years. Moss is the last offensive player to have the impact he's going to have imo. An incredible season just ended and I can't wait for the next one to begin.

Brady , Gronk, Cooks, and Edelman....

This is what our reaction will look like while we watch defenses try to stop them....

There will definitely be some 40 point showings, maybe a fifty burger or two.
