Butler case

Butler will eventually get paid. If he is with Pats this year he gets 3.9 mill as he is a RFA. He will not make a penny more. He will make big bucks next year as UFA, either with Pats or somebody else. If he gets traded to Saints, they will likely give him a new contract just so he wont leave after one year.
As for homers on this thread who are thrashing Butler's agent (there are 4 such posts already), he has already clarified that there has been no contractual contact with Pats since last year. Are you going to believe him or Lombardi who is a braggart and a journalist? And for those who think Butler should dump his agent just because he has never negotiated a NFL contract, think loyalty towards a guy who worked hard to get MB a tryout anywhere.

Butler is dragging this thru the mud? I have noticed only the Patriots and Saints PR machines spewing out information through their anonymous mouth pieces.

Listen i love the guy and i hope he stays and get's pay after next season. We would have a very good secondary. Something must have happened in the last minute for the pats to go after a top cornerback. Maybe something irked the pats.

This case is not about Butler on the field. Its about (self)evaluations and negotiations.
Butler's agent didn't do a good job at either it seems.
If he did he would have a team willing to take Butler on his terms..

BB doesn't have time to play games. He has a competitive team to put on the field and no one is waiting for him..

He played very well but wasn't he the one that gave up that big play to julio jones ij the 4th quarter when the falcons where pushed back and had to punt.
That was a perfect pass by Ryan and a phenomenal catch by Julio Jones. Rowe couldn't have covered jones any better unless he was plastic man. Well, a picture and a thousand words...

That catch was ridiculous. I like Ryan and he's a solid #2 who is physical, good technique and has a good jump on the ball, but he is not quick and a bit rigid. I would like to have him back, but someone will pay him.

I agree but idk if it will be what he wants. Personally i think he's solid and worth 10 mil

Still trying to digest this signing. It is so unlike what the Patriots usually do, throwing enormous money, a lot of it guaranteed, for a player is among the best free agents at the position but not a top CB compared to the rest of the league. Unless of course they think Gilmore hasn't been utilized correctly and could be an all-pro player in their system.

Gilmore has been a top-10 corner for a few years, nibbling at the edges of the top-5, on a team without a pass rush or any safeties. Butler's in the same boat, albeit for just two years. I suspect the Patriots expect that they have one more year of Butler, but don't expect to have Butler for more than one more year.

Gilmore has played in 4 different defensive systems in his 5 years in the league and he's bordered between great to good in all of them.

The fact that Belichick just gave him the deal he did says all you need to know about what he thinks about Gilmore.

No, seriously? Perfect position by Rowe, but perfect pass, perfect catch. No corner breaks that up.

I am just saying. Some people here where throwing crazy numbers in terms of money here. I think he will get less then 10 million dollars. Alot of corners out there.

What do you think of brandon flowers?

DB cap hits for 2017 // 2018:

McCourty --- 11M // 12M
Gilmore ----- 8-10M // 10M+ ..... (@Miguel)
Chung ------- 4.5M // 3.8M
Butler ------- 3.9M // ?
Harmon ---- 3.5M // 3.5M

a lot of money for secondary as it is
no room for another 10M contract (Ryan)
unfortunately don't see the room for Butler in 2018 anymore either
unless they plan on cutting McCourty ..

Spectacular coverage...could only beaten within a one inch window, which is what happened.

I hope bill drafts a corner. Is cyrus jones ready to step up? I hope so.

Seeing Malcolm's agent is saying the NEP haven't spoken about $ to him in a year they aren't saying much to him either.

He didn't say "haven't spoken to him in a year". He said "haven't spoken to him since last year". Big difference. Especially when a lawyer (who knows all about parsing words) says it. "Since last year" is as little as 9 weeks ago. (Still surprising if true, admittedly.)

I must be missing something here, the agent says he hasn't talked to the Pats. So that would mean the team just walked up on the last day and placed the tender on him. The whole time the agent did what? Nothing?? Sound too stupid to be true. More likely the agent shot his load trying for the moon and now is back tracking.

He played very well but wasn't he the one that gave up that big play to julio jones ij the 4th quarter when the falcons where pushed back and had to punt.

Rowe gave it up, not Logan Ryan. Also, there's no blame on the defender for that one. Rowe did pretty much everything he could do. It was just an effin' insane catch by Jones (and a really stupid, lucky throw by Matt Ryan.)

Why do you care what he earns or who our #1 CB is as long as we keep piling up those Lombardi trophies? This team will continue to contend for a SB

It's easier if you just think of these guys as wh0res who get paid to help us reach climax, then are let go for comparable replacements. Try not to get too attached, kid.
Your second paragraph in this post is what I was more delicately alluding to in reply to your first post.

Maybe he means since last league year......Can't trust those lawyers.

Do you think before posting? Even if it was his fault you would single out 1 play against Julio?

No reason to overpay Ryan which I believe you agree with and Corner class is insanely deep depending on Butler results and what BB thinks about Cyrus.

Cyrus is ready to step up in Ryan's shoes athletically. Mentally is a big Q.
If he can grow up he could be a big addition. If its his character - difficult.

With Harmon re-signed CB in this quality deep draft is almost certain. Some UDFAs and street FAs for the camp as well.

Two of Pats last years CB UDFAs ended on 46 rosters - J Jones and LeBlanc (CHI)

I might be in the minority, but I don't feel sorry for Butler. He is getting bad advice from someone. He was a nobody ... didn't even get an Undrafted Free Agent contract after the draft. The Patriots extended him an opportunity for a tryout and he took advantage of that opportunity and showed that he could play at this level.

His 1st year was like a red-shirt year, except he got thrown into the fray in the biggest game of the year and made the all time greatest play in Super Bowl history.

His second year he ends up as the starter but he is playing under his original contract making minimum (+ league bonuses). He wants to be paid like a starter. He makes his 1st Pro Bowl in 2015.

In 2016 he grouses about his pay and stays out of camp a day. Again his performance on the filed is exceptional. He is selected All Pro by Pro Football Focus.

He is a Restricted Free Agent and is age 27! Stefon Gilmore is signed to an outrageous $65M / 5 yr contract. That's what he wants, but because he is a RFA he is not entitled to it. If he waits two more years he too can get that kind of contract. Gilmore was a top 10 selection and has played 5 years in this league earning him the right to Free Agency.

Butler has been tendered the highest RFA tender of $3.9M. Pretty good money for a player entering his 4th year. He should play for the tender and shut his mouth. He will get franchised next year at around $14M or be traded. The following year at age 29 he will become a Free Agent, unfortunately he is not 26 like Gilmore. He will not get the type of contract that Gilmore got because of his age.

Butler's agent is out of his f**king depth and because of it Malcolm is paying for it to the tune of $600k last year and $3.9m this year. Wouldn't at all surprise me if this guy is looking for slightly more than Josh Norman got (5 years/$75m/$50m gtd) which is the biggest CB deal right now. I just get the feeling this guy really has no clue.

Honestly if i'm Bill I tell Butler's agent to go shop Butler around and see what team is willing to give up their first round pick and the deal they are looking for.

Says something when Bill hashes out a top 4 guarnateed money deal with Jason Chayut in a matter hours yet supposedly hasn't talked to this guy in however long.

FYI for anyone who doesn't know who Jason Chayut is, he was the thorn in Bill's side in '06 as he was Deion Branch's agent.

I feel sorry for Butler. He worked his butt off and proved he is a #1 corner.
Yet, this seems like a slight (signing Gilmore for that much $$).

Butler deserves what Gilmore got... IMO

That's ridiculous. NO ONE is screwing Malcolm Butler. Why are people demanding that Butler be paid as an UFA when he hasn't played the 4 years required to EARN that distinction.

It's that simple, and it holds true for EVERY player in the NFL. If Malcolm wanted to earn more that the $4MM he's slated to get paid, he would have had to give up something on the back end, like Gronk did. He decided against doing that. Fine, his choice.

Now to his credit, Malcolm is saying all the right things. Only his agent (who has his own agenda), and the mediots, who are simply trolling, are being whining b!tches about this (as well as some fans who've been influenced by those mediots).
