Bills FA CB Stephon Gilmore signs 5-year deal w/New England

Yup. Watch the bills jets Monday nighter and Gilmore got torched all game by a 31 year old Marshall and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I know it's just one game, but I've never seen that happen to Butler.

Ofc BB knows best and he may like the length of Gilmore, but im in the butler > Gilmore camp as well.
But Gilmore didnt have BB coaching him up

No, we disagree about how much money is too much for specific players and groups, in context. Like I said, all you have to do is look at the team's current cap breakdown.

And, yeah, we can just agree to disagree.

If Logan Ryan will get a contract north of 10m to be a #2 CB, then I suppose you are not that far off that on paper there should be enough cap space for two 14m CBs. It doesn't look like that's the direction the team wants to take though..

But doesn't Cooks want a big contract also?

It's not an issue for two more years. Fairly cheap contract this year, about 8-9m next year if we pick up his option and then negotiations for a new contract in '19.

There it is

See how fast crap like this turn from blind speculation to realistic rumor. In another hour it will be being reported as fact

BTW- were there any rumors about Gilmore? Of course not. That is how the Pats operate. They don't throw out straw dogs and hope someone agrees, and then do the deal. If it's a rumor than it's RARELY going to come to pass. So with this, we go from the ridiculous to the sublime

Pretty much how I see it as well.
Just last night you said it would be a bad idea to make this kind of signing. What changed so fast?

Gilmore signing gives NE 5 years of certainty in the #1 CB slot.
Butler's certainty is limited to one (as of this minute)

A Butler swap for Cooks would likely push Amendola off the roster....essentially swapping contracts .....with NE upgrading in a massive way.

The last part says it all.
Objectively you probably value butler higher than NFL execs. BB just showed us he prefers Gilmore and I'm sure Gilmore wasn't in your top 5.

You can't negotiate trades emotionally.

Well I am more a fan of his approach to the game than him personally. I like gritty guys who work their ass no. No Gilmore is not in my top 5. Butler is just about. I have Butler #5-6 and Gilmore #10-11.

Sherman, Norman, Talib, Peterson are to me the top 4. I'd put butler #5 or close to. I think Gilmore is a bit worse than Butler. However Both are #1 CBs and I don't believe it is a huge drop off.

Yes I am a fan of Butler but I don't think it is clouding my judgment. It is just how much I value CBs over WRs. I see CB as one of the top 3 most valuable spots and WR as only medium value among starting spots.

This Butler for Cooks, Butler the better player and harder.. much harder to replace.

I would want to swap our 1st rounders to do that deal or add 42 overall.

I was curious how that works with the tender.

The Patriots would be trading the rights to Butler. In other words, another team would have the right to match Butler's deal instead of the Pats.. If Butler was traded before signing an offer sheet with another team.

Filling the hole left by HT will not be that hard to cover. With a defensive backfield like the one we're building, a slightly lesser front 7 will be getting a lot of coverage sacks!

Butler, Gilmore, McCourty & Chung. Wow.

And if we trade Butler OR get 1st round pick, we'll still be sitting pretty good. Rowe and Jones are both decent and we could draft a young CB stud with an extra pick.

Well there weren't any offers this morning because the offer was only made this morning. There haven't been any negotiations before today.

Ryan may be getting that contract to be a #1 on a team like Pitt that doesn't place a lot of value on top corners.
I'd be surprised he gets that contract in a team that is already paying someone else more.

2017's cap is going to be $167m.

McCourty's going to cost just under $11m for 2017
If you were to add Butler and Gilmore at $14m (just for the example), that's another $28m
Chung's at $4.5 for 2017

So, the total outlay for your 4 putative starters would be $43.5m, and would be expected to go up a little over the course of the next couple of years. With the cap also expected to rise, that's easily doable, even adding Hightower, because there's not another big money deal coming up anywhere else on the defensive side.

It doesn't look like that's the direction the team wants to take though..

I'm hoping the rumor is wrong.

It dosent matter who is better regarding Butler and Gilmore. If you have a chance to have them both (for a year) you do it. Worst case we get an additional 1st round pick if that does not happen.

If they had just extended Butler, they would not have the other pro bowl CB on the team. Plus you have Jonses to develop. There is no downside to this move with the potential of Gilmore becoming a better player for us than Butler - better system, coaching etc than what he had with the Bills.

Its just chess. Nothing more.

Normally yes, but when you have a guy like Andrew Brandt sitting in the Saints' offices as they discuss the proposed trade from Belichick, you'd think there is something to it.

I am going to imagine the Patriots would take a CB with the 32nd pick if this goes through.

There are a lot of really good CBs out there this year. Humphrey from Alabama, Sidney Jones, Adoree Jackson, Gareon Conley, Tredavious White. Really is a decent year to pick up a CB.

You sure aren't drafting WRs if that deal goes through.

Always liked Butler from the beginning, but never thought of him as a shutdown corner, had problems with taller WR's , often had help over the top . Not sure what Gilmore will be, but he has better speed and height, would love to have both for at least a year.
With Revis or Talib( injuries) you could forget about that side of field.
Ryan???? don't get all the hype, don't other teams get that he will not be as good on their team ?
Weei freaking out about Butlers feeling.....cant imagine what felger will be saying .

I really like Cooks and based off the little we've read Belichick must LOVE him if he's offering up our first round pick for a receiver.
This would be a bad deal imho, even if Cooks is as good as they say, for this simple reason. A top notch CB is more valueble to a team's success than a top WR.

I've been saying it for years. So many of the league's BEST WR's often play on non-playoff teams. They may be fun to watch, and they rack up tons of nice stats for FF owners, but DO THEY HELP WIN GAMES?

NO had the best (most yds) passing attack in the league, and have for many years. Cooks put up numbers galore, when he wasn't *****ing and moaning. But HOW MANY games have the Saints actually won. I would opine that they might have won more with a quality #1 CB than they did with a small speed receiver.

If were a Saints fan, I'b be salivating over the prospect of having a CB duo of Butler and Breaux next season. We've got FIVE F*ckin' superbowl here and not ONE was led by what anyone would call a true #1 WR. How many more do we have to win before the lesson become clear?

I like this move!

I'm just very shocked that we're paying big $$$ to a CB finally, and he's not from our system. We wouldn't pay Ty Law, Asante Samuel, Aqib Talib, and they were all proven in our system. Yet we're giving even more money to a CB from Buffalo.

Do you REALLY think that Payton would be talking trade where someone like Brandt could hear it? I don't.
