Bills FA CB Stephon Gilmore signs 5-year deal w/New England

thats plausible. I juat don't know who it will be.

As far as I know, only the Browns have 2 picks in the 1st round.. That being said, there are numerous teams out there that would be willing to trade a 1st for a known quantity like Butler.

I really like this move. The Pats will have two solid #1 CBs and a solid #1 safety. The Pats may have the best secondary in the League in 2017.

Have to think another move is about to be made though.

Butler couldn't sign an offer sheet yet so the patriots couldn't know what the offer was and whether they would match it.
True but Belichick always seems to know these things.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't offer Butler the 14 million. Unless he's demanding like 16 or something crazy.

I wonder if the Steelers might.

Gilmore gives the Pats that big CB to take on the elite big receivers in the League. Ryan did a good job with many of them, but he ain't Gilmore in that respect.

What about hightower? Does this mean he's gone? Are we gonna have alot of brand new players on defense?

I am thinking which teams would give up a first rounder for butler? I think he's staying this year. He will get paid after next season.

No, this means that Re-signing Butler is less likely as they pay a great deal of attention to the cost of the unit, in this case the corners. Hightower is a separate issue and there is still a decent likelihood they sign him for around 13 a season. Butler for Cooks is sounding more likely imo.

I find it hard to believe that Butler wouldn't have jumped at an offer of 14 million per year.
That's what I'm thinking. Why not give the money to Butler? Maybe Bill's daring the league to sign him away for a first.

Well he has been negotiating with butler so he has an idea what his demands are
But it's pretty much impossible for him to know the details of an offer that may or may not be coming in order to decide whether to match it or not. Player and team aren't going to give bb an early heads up before submitting the offer sheet.

I love this signing but that will have a trickle down effect on roster building. As has been already questioned what's going to happen with Butler and Hightower that although plays a different position will command top dollar.

In fact, it looks like Ryan is likely gone, or not, maybe the market is not so strong for him and he would settle for a little less and stay in NE at a 8 Mi figure? Maybe BB decided that Gilmore + Rookie will be better than Ryan + Butler, or rookie + Butler wanting top money? So many scenarios.

All I can say is that I feel comfortable in letting Butler go for a 1st rounder now.

2 firsts in a deep draft + 2 3rd rounders and maybe something still in the works regarding JimmyG, that would be a high quality rebuild.

I said at the time of the Collins trade when people were complaining that they would have gotten a 3rd round comp pick for him anyway that I expect the Pats to be a player in free agency this year and that comp picks are not a given. Assuming Hightower re-signs, the Gilmore signing would negate a comp pick for Collins.

Getting a 1st back if we do lose Butler....I can stomach that.

I still don't think a team will give the first for Butler but the Cooks deal becomes more likely imo.

maybe because worst case is you get them both for a year guaranteed with Butler only making 4 mil OR you get Gilmore and a 1st round pick.

I see this more as the money they had budgeted for Collins or Jones, and the Patriots decided they would rather have a DB than a front 7 player.

Do we really know that it's 14 million for Gilmore?

Interesting since he just joined the SB Champs.

Why wouldn't Butler hold out over this if he stays?

I think butler will stay. I don't know if teams think he's worthy of a first round pick. He will get paid after next season. They could trade him also for someone. Who knows.
