5 year deal according to Schefter

People keep asking why not pay Bulter $14 million. I think it's obvious Belichick thinks Gilmore is the better player. I don't know if I would have agreed with that before this signing, but I have learned over the past 16 seasons that he knows 100 times or more about the game than I could even pretend to. I don't know why so many people continue to question him.

There is the attachment aspect and that Butler is a homegrown talent...but if the return is Gilmore and Cooks or Gilmore and a first...hard to be distraught about that.

Of course I'd prefer Malcolm stay on board for another season. We'd have one of if not the best secondary in the league.

This is a really good move. 14+ per/yr is probably overpaying for Gilmore somewhat but pass defense is one of the most important things in the league now, can't really overspend on that. And I'd much rather overpay Gilmore than overrated Ryan. Boy am I glad I don't have to see that guy in a Patriots uniform ever again.

I hope Butler stays so that can have an elite 1-2 combo at CB. There's nothing better than when we had Revis/Browner or what Devner has in Talib/Harris.

Great signing Stephon Gilmore is just going into his prime and we have a Tough Schedule on tap next this year facing a lot of Young Big Good WR's.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't offer Butler the 14 million. Unless he's demanding like 16 or something crazy.

I think they are simply going to let the league set Butler's value and then decide whether to match it or not.

As Manx and Bruins29 stated, if he goes it's as if the Pats traded Gilmore for Butler and got a first round pick in return. If Butler stays it will be at a league determined value.

No, this means that Re-signing Butler is less likely as they pay a great deal of attention to the cost of the unit, in this case the corners. Hightower is a separate issue and there is still a decent likelihood they sign him for around 13 a season. Butler for Cooks is sounding more likely imo.
Giving butler what they gave Gilmore would mean roughly 1/3 of the cap tied up in the secondary.
lasr year the cap hit for the top
6 players in the secondary was under 13.5 mill. We just paid Gilmore more per year than 6 dbs cost us last year. Hard to believe we will spend as much on the other side too

This is amazing. Butler and Gilmore with DMC roaming around. We could potentially have the #1 defense

I hope the above is the case. Just one year of this CB duo BB please!

Do we really know that it's 14 million for Gilmore?
We don't and if history holds almost every patriot contract ends up lower than the initial report. But I'm sure it's close.

A note on playing the slot, Ryan had an exceptional 6.69 three cone. Gilmore had a ridiculous 6.61 three cone along with better straight line speed and explosiveness (jumps).
