Pats not trading Garoppolo - Schefter

If you can conclude that you've found a Brady clone based on six quarters of play without the guy ever actually winning anything of significance, then it shouldn't be too hard by that standard to find another clone.

It's not whether I have concluded that. It's whether Bill Belichick et al. think that, based on their knowledge, which is far more extensive than six quarters of game action.

And I'm not even saying the Pats will/should keep Garoppolo long-term. I'm merely pointing out the other side of the "calculations" the FO will need to make.

Brett Favre lasted past 40 and he didn't take care of himself other than to couple twelve packs with Vicodin. Brady has taken better care of himself than any athlete I have ever heard of and the rewards show in the field, as at the age of 39 he was the best player in the league, and he's the only player in football to receive MVP votes each of the past 6 seasons. It would be one thing if his detractors could point to some deterioration in his game to go along with aging, unfortunately for them he has been getting better, not worse.

Plus he could get the money today instead of waiting a year. 2 year $30 MM extension with a $15 MM signing bonus would speak loudly.
Wait you want to pay 30 million for 2 years to a backup QB?
And you want to pay it to one who if he accepted it would mean he doesnt care about playing?
If Brady retires tomorrow the patriots wouldn't give garraopolo 30 mill for the next 2 years.

I hope Jimmy G's our future QB after tommy. It's never a smooth transition. Can't wait to see how tommy play's next season at 40. I don't expect much of a dropoff but who knows. They need the offensive line to be solid and have a good running game. I am more worry about how this defense will look next season if hightower leaves.

Curious to see how he look's next year from game to game. If he loses any zip on his passes.

One thing about favre. He took alot of hits. He could still throw it. He had an mvp type season at 40.

In other words you hope 2017 is Bradys last year in New England, because that is the only way Garrapolo succeeds him.

Amazing just how grateful so many Patriot fans are for Tom Brady's performance as Patriots QB. He should have left for the money years ago.

Yep, it will also be interesting to see if Garrapolo can make through two whole games as well. Tough playing QB when you are that fragile.

I wasn't talking about 2017 or JG specifically (in fact, I expect JG to be traded before this draft, and if not, to either just walk away or be tagged and traded after the 2017 season. In any event, I would be beyond shocked if he's on the team in 2018, if for no other reason than the contracts make it incredibly unrealistic.) So whoever Brady's successor will be, it won't be JG.

My issue is with the dumb concept of "NE should not move on from Brady until he's better than his replacement." That's dumb because it completely ignores the crucial issue of time. At some point 5-10 years of a good starter is more important to have than 1 or 2 years of a superstar.

I will agree that while Brady is better than the prospective replacement there is no issue with staying with Brady while the replacement is under the team's control. Of course you go with whoever's better in that situation! The problem is when the replacement finishes the final year of his contract and the coaching staff feels Brady (for whatever reason) is a short-timer. Even if Brady is still better than the replacement at that point, BB (or whoever) has to seriously think about moving on because the alternative is to not have a viable QB when Brady is done.

Dude i am talking long term and not short term. You really clueless if you think tom's playing for the next 5 years. Bringing back jimmy's not being disrespectful. Belichick's looking long term here.

Next year's quarterback class's loaded. They will get nothing for jimmy G. If they let him walk after next season than it was a total waste. You might as well trade him now for peanuts. I am not much of a fan of brissett but we will see.

It depends on the unknowable future.

For example, if I knew that Brady would be done after 2018 (whether because of injury, falling off a cliff, change of heart, whatever), then yes, I would like 2017 to be his last year in NE so that the team could move on to someone who appears to have a good chance of being a solid starter.

By contrast, if I knew that Brady would be good until, say, 2021 then I would not want 2017 to be his final year with the team.

2 year extension, means it gets tacked onto his existing contract for a total of 3 years. Would average say $10 MM/year and keep him through 2019. By then TB will be 42. Cheaper than Oswielier.

You're the one who is clueless. First you claimed that a top 3 pick isn't close to enough compensation for Garrapolo, but when challenged you couldn't name a backup who had gotten that kind of trade compensation. Now you are claiming Brady can't keep up his play even though it has been getting better not worse, and he was the best player in football this season. After this draft Garrapolo's value will continue to deteriorate until all they get is a 3rd round pick after he leaves in free agency. Garrapolo will not be Brady'scsuccessor as he will be gone after the 2017 season and Brady isn't going anywhere.

Osweiler was paid to be a starter. No one pays 10 mill a year for a backup.
Not to mention why would garoppolo agree to sit the bench?

I think tom will play well next season. Beyond that i don't know. It will be a difficult transition when you have a legend
at the end of his career. Brady eats and sleeps football.

You are really clueless. Smh. I am sure bill has gotten crappy value back for jimmy.

Upfront bonus he gets today vs. having to wait a year. Bird in hand vs. 2 in bush

I guess that means that Tom Brady is "clueless"because he's the one who is adamant about playing four to five more seasons. Then again I'm sure you know much more about what Tom Brady can and can't do than he does. I mean hell, what does he know, he's just the guy who has been proving all his detractors wrong for 17 years. But I'm sure you and Max Kellerman are right, he's just going to suddenly suck, and Jimmy Garrapolo is going to be the greatest QB of all time.

I don't think that any JG extension will happen but to say that him accepting one would mean he doesn't want to play isn't necessarily true.

It could mean he would begrudgingly accept waiting to play on the best managed and coached team in the NFL and almost guarantees success, then comes the huge payday.

Unlikely and probably impossible scenario, but it doesn't have to mean he doesn't care about playing. Being able to play for the best teams will give you a longer career (more earning potential) than playing for a **** team. (Phillip Rivers probably an exception to that, as he's done well for himself surrounded by trash for much of his career)
