Montana: Can't Call Brady Best Ever

I can see Montana 10 years from now wearing a straitjacket in a mental institution chanting "I'm the best. I'm the greatest. Nobody better than me. I'm the best. I'm the goat."
To be honest he is much better than jerry rice who always keeps saying that even now. He is more insufferable than anyone.

Perfectly legitimate argument, as long as he means it. It's why I've suggested people start talking about "Best in the Super Bowl era", which would get rid of the problem of dealing with the pre-film guys. Starr and Unitas would get screwed, but that's what asterisks are for. If you do that, you start with just 4 "locks" at the very top

Brady
Montana
Staubach
Young

instead of waiting until #9 before getting into any real discussion.

Otto Graham won 3 NFL championships and 4 AAFC Championships. Back then the NFL had 12 teams and the AAFC had 8 teams. So we could fairly say that Brady having 7 AFC Championships in a 16 team conference is equivalent.

And considering that the AAFC's 4 championships were all won by the Cleveland Browns can we really consider that to be a real Professional level league :p

Ridiculous. I thought Montana was a humble guy. guess I was wrong.
Every competitive player thinks he is better than an adversary and couldve done the same things etc etc. There is nothing wrong in it. Brady never says he is the best QB of all time publicly does he ? I am sure privately he is driven to be called that.

I don't know Montana's personality, but I would expect him to be more humble about it. Put it this way, IF there is another QB in the future who gets 5-6 rings I would think Brady would call that person the [new] GOAT.
So does brady call himself the GOAT now in public just like montana says he isnt the goat in public ? Every competitive QB will feel the same way privately .
Here is a good breakdown of this discussions. They are both great in their own way.

Tom Brady vs. Joe Montana; too much heat on Kyle Shanahan

I did a little exercise a few days ago. I looked at Montana's and Brady's careers. I applied a score to each season that is the number of games left to be played when the team won their final game. For example, if you won the SB the score would be zero - there are no games left to be played. If you won the conf. but lost the SB, your score would be 1 - the SB was still to be played when you won your last game (the conf champ). If you bowed out in the conf game your score would be 2. And so forth. The lowest score would be the most successful QB.

Totalling that up and averaging over the number of seasons played as a starter (so, less seasons off for injury), Montana gets 1.91. Brady gets 1.53. This tells us that, on average, Brady gets his team about a half game deeper into the playoffs each year than Montana was able to get his teams.

There is no doubt that Brady has been measurably the more successful QB over his career. And for longer; Montana had 11 scorable seasons. Brady has had 15 - so far.

I'll do some more later. Bradshaw, Kelly, Marino, Aikman and the Mannings will be easy. I'll add Unitas, Starr and Graham if I can figure out how to fairly compare the pre SB era playoff structures.

When has brady called himself the GOAT in public or private? And I'm not saying montana doesn't have an argument - i'm saying he should humble about it.

His wife saying he calls himself the greatest in private undermines every single word he said. He's a hypocrite. Brady has no trouble saying someone else deserves the Super Bowl MVP and always says it's the team that wins the game not one person.

Not a problem. Joe has his opinions and I respect them. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint.

Joe should wear the T-shirt in your avatar pic during interviews.

The argument is legitimate, and would be a slight against Brady, if Brady hadn't of won two of his Super Bowls while the "old rules" were being played. I think you can put Brady in any era and he would still be successful. Guys like Manning? Not so much.

Brady didn't play under the old rules. He played a couple of years under rules that fell somewhere in the middle of "the old rules" and "the candy ass rules of today".

Meh...put him in the pile with the others who reject reality.

Truth be told, I'm still working on that project; going through numbers, adjustments for eras, etc. It's interesting to say the least.

Love the last paragraph:

"At that point in the interview, Montana’s wife interjected that Montana does call himself the greatest when they’re alone at home. Perhaps Montana is just putting on a modest face by declining to answer the question."

While some suggest Montana was being non-committal and honest, his wife blows that away. Reminds me of the joke when an officer pulled over a couple for speeding and the wife said: "Please give him a warning - he always does this after a couple of beers..."

Joe can at least be secure in his position on the Top NFL Players Who Went Bankrupt list.

I'm OK cutting him a little slack for the sour grapes.
