Offseason Free Agents thread....

Some rumblings say it is because of injury rehab (he was wearing a harness on his injured left shoulder during the SB) others are speculating about the contract angle.. to be honest both are somewhat weird reasons to sit out a SB parade.. how many of those do you realistically get ?

I hate speculating over these things. Its just to bad he wasn't celebrating with his team and giving the fans the opportunity to show their appreciation for him and his elite and gutsy play all year. He deserves every cheer his way.

High is a fascinating one. Great player, but seems very injury prone. Will Bill give him megabucks if he thinks he will be 60% for a majority of the season? I think I know the answer to that one.

I see a contract being offered, but with a lot of clauses. Would High want that though? Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if he is let go. If you have lived through Seymour leaving, that shouldn't surprise you.

No option is off the table I feel

Indy will be all over High like white on rice.
Its real weird he missed the parade.

If it's not going to work out with Hightower I would probably tag him and see if a good trade could be worked out. I suspect we could get a #2 pick for a tagged Hightower from a team with tons of cap space.

not every guy who 'gets it' leaves money on the table.......don't hold it against those who don't.....it's a rough sport and every play could end it

Yeah, the guys who get it don't leave money on the table.

I cant go higher than 10 Mill a season for High I just cant.
Id look at Ingram for that kind of dough

lol, maybe when the salary cap was 110m but not in 2017.

He will get somewhere around 13m with the biggest question is how much is guaranteed or put into incentives..

Everyone is always bringing up players leaving in the past trying to make a point when the situations are not even close to be similar. It's the same lazyness as "we never get anyone in FA" or "we don't give out big contracts". Everything easily refutable.

When I say a player"gets it" it has nothing to do with leaving money on the table or doing any favor to the Patriots.

What I mean by this is his mentality of putting the team first and being a voice in the locker room that creates enough peer pressure to keep everyone else grinding.

It's like Lombardi said on one of his podcasts.. there are three types of people in the locker room: the ones with a positive influence (Bruschi, Wilfork, Mayo, Brady ect.) in terms of effort and prep, the ones with a negative influence who rather play video games or go out on a boat trip during the playoff BYE and then those who just follow. You always want to have more of the first kind on a team.

What is Malcolm Mitchell's role going forward. 3rd WR behind Edelman & Hogan/Amendola?

I've agreed with most of your comments re: the Hightower situation, but this one sucks, and is being overused quite a lot lately.

I would bet that "the money has been there" before (or could very easily have been maneuvered) with other key players who Belichick has watched walk away in the past. He isn't likely going to budge too far from the value that he places on the player, which is the main reason why we have that much available cap space to begin with.

I think Mitchell's role will continue with where he left off Sunday night. As long as he can remain healthy and his play doesn't drop drastically like LaFell's did, he should have that role.

The fact that he was chosen to be active for the two most important games of the year and seems to have gained the trust of Brady, McDaniels, and Belichick pretty much speaks volumes to me. They're obviously going to hope that his first year production increases while building on his rookie campaign.

Sounds about right. I wonder if Mitchell being more familiar with the playbook contributed to him playing over Floyd.

Oh, I'd have to guess that had a lot to do with it. If Floyd is retained on a one year prove it type of deal, he could certainly end up splitting reps but I think it's definitely Mitchell's to lose.

It is more a general overlook at how decisions which are shocking to fans aren't scary for Bill and the team. I am not comparing anything to anything, this is a mentality thing

If Bill lets High walk because he won't pay him Collins money (or looks to clause it and High refuses), there will be a bit of a breakdown on here in some quarters. However, Bill will do what's best for team. That is the furthest thing away from a lazy generalisation, it is just a fact.

We are blessed that we have a man who can be so strong running the team. I know as far back as Bledsoe and Milloy, I would have sunk the franchise.

But just for those too lazy to read everything, I till maintain there is a huge chance we re-sign. All I said was I wouldn't be shocked if Bill didn't overpay for a guy who is injury prone.

I just fail to see how a difference of around 2m between what the Patriots are willing to offer and franchising High -- who is a model citizen and has grown into being a vocal leader as opposed to Collins -- is worth letting him walk this offseason. Don't get me wrong I am with you in terms of a long term extension. Personally I think it will get done but if he wants crazy money for some reason then he will be gone next year after playing this season on a franchise tag.

I am totally in agreement with you on all points

If they offer him 13m and he declines. He will be tagged and next year he leaves. I have no doubt about it.
