The 2017 Mock Draft Thread

A couple of things about your tight end list:

I doubt Howard makes it to #32, especially with Green Bay picking in front of us.

As of now, I doubt bb ponies up the cash to keep Bennett.

Not sure at 220 pounds, engrams is even in bb's board.

I do think bb takes a tight end in the middle rounds of he draft and I do see bb signing a free agent to replace Bennett.

Eazy weighed in @236 recently

If Floyd comes back, it basically negates any playing time engram would get.

Disagree. Two completely different players. Engram works the middle, underneath. While Floyd is an outside the #'s guy.

Joe Mixon is never putting a Pats uni on. Ever.

Forget about him and what he did. That's not important.

Look at our owners and what they've said on that subject. Absolutely no way Krafts are signing off on him.

I agree. I think he will be given an oppertunity but i just dont think it will be with the patriots.

But anyways, i saw a mock draft earlier that had us taking hassasn reddick and carl lawson with the first and second pick and taywan taylor falling to us all the way in the fifth. I would be alrite with the the first two picks but i would be very happy with taylor in the fifth. I have a feeling hes going to blow up the combine and his routes are so crisp. I do think he needs to get stronger. I like him as a prospect overall.

I would be ecstatic w/ that haul.

Taylor's #'s are sick. Seems like a love, hate guy judging from what i hear.

WR Class is better than first look

OT, but not a bad track record. Starting OG and two and a half stars of the SB (Mitchell is the half for his 4th Q performance).

Depending on how mccaffrey runs, I would be all in on him as a patriot, but I do not have a first round grade on him.

That being said, I can easily see bb trading #32 and dropping back a half dozen picks and taking mccaffrey there. Plus we pick up an extra third.

2nd round - mccafrey standford rb
2nd round - Anderson Alabama lb
3rd round - Adams auburn dt
3rd round - hall Texas a&m de
4rh round - elder Miami CB

He ran a 10.4 100 meter in HIGHSCHOOL, He should easily run in the 4.4 range

1.a Zach Cunninghan - LB - Vanderbilt
1.b Taco Charlton - DE - Michigan
2. Alvin Kamara -RB - Tennessee
3.a Julie'n Davenport - OT - Bucknell
3.b Jake Butt - TE - Michigan

I guess I'll give it a go as well.

I'm not a cap expert, so I'll just stick with some priorities without going into actually numbers.

While the Pats have a lot of cap space they also have a lot of free agents. Some prioritizing is neccessary. For me, that will be towards the defense. That means letting go of Marty to keep Logan Ryan fx.

So the extension I'd like to see: Butler, Ryan, Hightower.

Players I'd like to keep, but are ready to let go if the numbers don't work: Branch, Long, Harmon, Develin, Floyd, Sheard

I'd like to keep Marty, but I don't see his value and his $ matching, when all is said and done. And as I said, I would rather spend money keeping our DB group intact. Eventhough he has had a great season, I'm also moving on from Blount.

As for other teams free agents, I haven't really looked at it. There proably isn't going to be a big splash, so for now I'm just ignoring that aspect.

Trade: Jimmy to Browns for a 1(12) and 3 + Trade 32 for early 2 and a 3.

1: Solomon Thomas DL
Don't know if he'll make it this far, but if he does, I'm taking him. Him and Flowers on the d-line together would make me a very happy man.

2.a: Haason Reddick LB
I like what he brings to the table. He can go for the QB, drop back in coverage, he has speed. He just seem like a player MP and BB will love.

2.b: Budda Baker S
If Harmon is kept, then maybe this pick would change, but both Chung and D-Mac are not getting any younger.

3.a: Kareem Hunt/Samaje Perine RB
My clear preference at this point is Kareem Hunt. And BB gotta love those fumble numbers - or lack thereof. He can catch the ball as well.

3.b: Ethan Pocic C
While the O-line did a good job this season I wouldn't mind some competetion on the interior. David Andrews has played well, but I do feel he upgradeable.

3.c: Jake Butt/Adam Shaheen TE
I let Marty go, so I'm picking a TE. I like Engram a lot, but he's gone by now, and I have other priorities in the two first rounds. The tight end Butt obviously opens up a lot of low hanging fruit on the tree of comedy, but I like him. He's more proven than Shaheen, but I see a lot of potential in Shaheen. I'll be happy with either.

This should be it's own thread so we can take a shot at it

Yeah did put it in the jimmy pick thread but wanted to put it into the draft area's as well

Love the Reddick and Engram picks. Jerome could be a great contributor as well.

Not sold on Smoot. He's just not physical enough for me. Doesn't hold up well in the run game. Needs to go somewhere like Denver to really shine. I can't fathom Witherspoon falling to the 5th round. If he did, I'd be all over that.

Malone and Stringfellow don't do much for me, but I like the double-dip!

The season is officially over so its time for my first mock draft. This is the dream mock draft. I know it’s unlikely but this is what I see as the best case scenario. (Draft positions are based off Over the Cap’s compensatory pick projections)
Projecting The 2017 Compensatory Draft Picks | Over the Cap

Philosophy

In the past when looking at the draft I have been guilty of trying to find pro bowlers in every round and target the best talent. Over time and watching the way the Pats operate I have shifted my thinking into looking for players that can fill specific rolls, how they can contribute and how they fit into the current team. The Pats are the most successful team in the NFL not because they are the most talented across the board, but because they are the best and finding the best skillsets and fit for their scheme. That is what I am trying to do here. This may not be the most talent stacked mock draft but these are all guys I see as good fits and contributors to this team on and off the field.

Trade QB Jimmy Garoppolo to SF 49ers for 2017 1st (2)

The Jimmy G trade market really heats up with San Fran having to outbid Cleveland and Chicago for their guy. The #2 overall pick is a steep price to pay but not for a franchise QB. Jimmy G with Kyle Shanahan should be able to turn around that team pretty quickly, especially with potentially $100mil in cap space. This really is the ideal trade for the Pats, they determine where Jimmy G ends up and assuming Myles Garrett goes #1, they continue to control the QB market. Which leads to…

Trade 1(2) to NY Jets for 1(6) + 2(39) + 2018 1st

I know trading within the division is pretty rare, especially with a bitter rival, but I think this makes a lot of sense for both teams. Like the 49ers, the Jets are in desperate need of a QB. Todd Bowles is on the hot seat and needs to do something to give the Jets hope. Moving up and grabbing the top QB in the draft is exactly the kind of move that might buy him extra time and the Jets some hope (although it didn't help Jeff Fisher). Sitting at 6 they are risking not having a guy fall to them or being jumped by a team like the Bills or Browns, so they bite the bullet and make the move up ahead of the Bears to grab their top rated guy. The price is steep (a 2nd and a future 1) but they could also trade Sheldon Richardson to recoup some of that value. Word is the Jets really like Trubisky and even in a weak QB class teams will have to pay a premium to get a top guy.

While Jonathan Allen would be very tempting at #2, moving down just offers far too much value, especially in a strong draft. Getting a future 1st that would likely be a high first is just too good to pass up. Even though it’s a year away that is a pick would look to target a LT to replace Solder (Connor Williams from Texas?).

The question is why would the Pats help the Jets get a QB? Simply because I don’t think we should be scared of any of the QB’s in this year’s draft. If we can move down, get solid value and stick the desperate Jets with a QB we think may bust then I think it’s a perfect deal.

1(6 from NYJ)- MLB- Reuben Foster- Alabama

This is simply take the BPA and I think that will be Foster. I assume Garrett and Allen will both be gone so the only other consideration would be SS Jamal Adams from LSU (who I absolutely love), but most mocks have him going #5 to the Titans. Foster is a special talent and one I think is definitely deserving of a top 10 pick. In fact Matt Miller has said an NFC scout has given Foster a perfect grade.

On the field I think we all know enough about Rueben Foster so I won’t go into much detail breaking him down. He is a leader, a playmaker, a tone setter and will be a flat out beast in the middle of any defense in the NFL. He was the QB of one of the greatest defenses ever at Alabama and I think he could do the same in New England. I see him developing into the defensive General, organising the defense and raking up tackles in the middle, allowing Hightower to move around and be a disruptive playmaker.

1(32)- OLB- Ryan Anderson- Alabama

Jonathan Allen may be the most talented player on the Alabama defense. And Reuben Foster may be the QB of that D, but it is undoubtedly Ryan Anderson along with Eddie Jackson that are the leaders of the Alabama Crimson tide. If you like a guy that plays with an edge and some attitude, or a guy that gives 100% every single snap regardless of the situation, you are gonna love Anderson.

Anderson isn’t a Von Miller type OLB that is going to bend around the edge and get to the QB with elite speed. What he will do is play with excellent technique, good leverage, violent hands, a non-stop motor and uncompromising gap integrity. He might not be a big sack guy but his impact will be felt well beyond the box score. I think he would be a perfect long term replacement for Ninkovich as a guy that can play as a down lineman or on his feet. With Sheard and Long free agents we definitely need some depth and talent on the edge. He reminds me a bit of Terrell Suggs.

Off the field Anderson is a hard worker and a great leader. After losing a bunch of experienced players in the 2016 draft, Anderson stepped up as a vocal leader for Alabama this season. He has extremely high expectations of himself and those around him. The way he is never satisfied and is always looking to improve seems like a perfect fit for the Pats.

"You're capable of losing to anybody," Anderson said. "We're not playing just to win. Teams I've played on that practiced and did enough to win, they didn't accomplish nothing."

Where are Alabama's leaders? Look no further than Eddie Jackson and Ryan Anderson
Holly Rowe ?@sportsiren Jan 8

Interesting nugget @AlabamaFTBL Ryan Anderson told me today. This was his 540th practice. And he has never missed one. That is impressive.

I know some analysts have him rated as a 2nd or 3rd rounder but I doubt he gets out of the first. I wouldn’t hesitate to move up to take him before 32 either, I think he is a great fit.

2(39 from NYJ)- CB- Desmond King- Iowa

I know I will be in the minority here with such depth and talent at CB in this draft but I absolutely love Desmond King for the Pats. He may not be the ‘sexiest’ CB in this draft, he’s not 6’1” and won’t run a blazing 40, but I think he is a great fit here. There are a few things the Pats require out of their corners and I think King ticks all the boxes.

We play a multiple defense which requires CB’s to be able to play both man and zone coverage. King was arguably the best zone CB in college football last season. He is also excellent in man coverage, particularly off-man where he reminds me so much of Darelle Revis with the way he moves, always keeps his eyes in the backfield, recognises plays and essentially runs routes for WR’s. I wish he were a little more physical in press-man but that is something I think he can develop, especially with his competitive nature. We also require our corners to be excellent tacklers and King was one of the highest graded tacklers in college football. He is also a playmaker with exceptional ball skills which allowed him to pull in 8 picks in 2015 and 14 for his career.

King also offers some versatility as a kick returner where he was forced to make his biggest impact in 2016 because teams simply stayed away from him in the passing game. Kick returns have been a weakness for the Pats this season so adding more options certainly can’t hurt. I also think he has the versatility to play safety if required because he is a ball hawk and such a good tackler, but I think #2 CB opposite Malcolm Butler is where he is best suited. Have Butler lock down the opposition #2 WR, King on the opposition #1 with safety help over the top and use Eric Rowe as a matchup guy against bigger WR’s.

One of the most important attributes I look for in a defensive back is competitiveness and Desmond King is definitely a competitor. At times I think that competitiveness has gotten the best of him and lead to a silly penalty or two, but I think that is just because he was pressing trying to make a play. An example of this is the Michigan game where his energy and effort helped will his team to an upset victory, but it also lead to a stupid penalty where he was just trying too hard. I don’t think that this will be a problem going forward and I think having two competitive corners with passion and energy would be a huge asset.

2 (64) – DL- Dalvin Tomlinson- Alabama

We could use some depth on the interior defensive line and I think Tomlinson would be a great fit. He has NFL size at 6’3” 310lbs and we know he is well coached in a gap control defense at Alabama. Tomlinson arguably possesses the best hand technique of any Dlineman in this draft and his teammates and coaches rave about his hand fighting. He’s not an explosive, penetrating DT in the mold of Dominique Easley but he is a versatile, big bodied run stuffer that will help control the line of scrimmage and free up our linebackers to make plays.

Cont.

3(96)- RB- Jamaal Williams- BYU

I absolutely love this guy and can’t figure out why he isn’t rated higher. He’s a big, physical, slashing RB with excellent feet and good vision. He reminds me a lot of former Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander. Give him any kind of running lane and he is going to explode through it a break off a big run. I think he is one of the most talented ball carriers in this draft and a future 1,000 yard rusher in the NFL. He would be a perfect replacement for Blount as the early down, short yardage power back to compliment Lewis and White. In the late 3rd round I think Williams would be great value. I wouldn’t have a problem with us taking him in the 2nd.

3(105 Comp)- FS- Eddie Jackson- Alabama

I never really loved Eddie Jackson as a 1st round safety before his injury but the value is too good to pass up here. My biggest concerns are his lack of bulk and tackling ability. What I love about him though is he is an absolute ball hawk. Excellent athleticism, change of direction and closing speed allow him to make plays on the ball and superb ball skills allow him to create turnovers. A former CB, I think he still has the skills to play there in the NFL but I ultimately believe his best position is safety. Either in a deep CF role or dropping down to cover slot, I think he would be an excellent developmental guy behind McCourty and Chung, especially with Duron Harmon hitting free agency.

Like Ryan Anderson before, one of the most impressive things about Eddie Jackson is his leadership skills. The role he took on after his injury and the way he is viewed and treated by his teammates says a lot about his character. While I like the physical skillset, I love the intangibles. He is also an excellent special teamer who would offer a lot of value at this point, assuming he is healthy coming back from injury

Alabama's Eddie Jackson Is Still Leading Despite Season-Ending Injury

Why Eddie Jackson remains asset for Alabama even after season-ending injury

4(136)-OL- Jordan Morgan- Kutztown

I originally had this as Connor McDermott from UCLA as a developmental OT prospect but then I saw Morgan and loved him. He’s a small school D2 guy but there are 3 things I really like about him, he has NFL interior lineman size at 6’3” 313lbs. He has excellent athleticism, moves very well laterally with quick feet and gets to the second level with ease, blocking with good balance. Finally I love this guy’s work ethic. He is essentially a self-made player.

When Morgan arrived at Kutztown as a 235lb walk on, the strength and conditioning program was “years behind the curve” so he worked outside the team to get himself up to nearly 320lbs. His coaches rave about his work ethic and his obsession to be the best he can be, wanting to perfect every drill, every play. He seems like a great fit for the Pats and could blossom under Scar.

I really like him as a developmental interior guy who contribute right away as an extra TE in heavy sets, something he has done quite a lot at Kutztown. He won the 2016 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award and I really think he has a shot to be a player in the NFL.

Kutztown's Jordan Morgan molds himself into one of the 2017 NFL draft's best guard prospects

5(164)-DL- Deatrich Wise Jr- Arkansas

Wise was a guy who some thought could play himself into being an early round pick because he possesses prototype size, great length and good athleticism. Unfortunately injuries completely derailed his 2016 season and he will likely be a late round pick. The most impressive thing to me about Wise is the way he uses his length. He has very long arms that he uses extremely well to keep opposing lineman from getting their hands on him, which allows him to set a strong edge and disengage to make a play. He also has one of, if not the best bull rush of any edge defender in this draft. He uses his long arms to drive opposing OT’s straight back into the lap of the QB, collapsing the pocket and creating fantastic pressure. This might not translate to huge sack numbers in the NFL, but it should lead to a lot of pressures.

Because of a shoulder and wrist injury in 2016 Wise was forced into a new role off the bench for Arkansas. These injuries compromised his ability to play the run on the edge so he accepted a lesser role as an interior sub rusher in order to help his team. In the end I think this experience will help him in the NFL because I see him as a rotational DE on early downs, then shifting inside on passing downs similar to Trey Flowers.

As is a common thread with a lot of these prospects, Deatrich Wise is another really high character guy. This is evident in the fact that he was willing to take a step back and take a lesser role for the good of the team. He also seems like a perfect fit for New England because of the importance he places on community service. This is something that has been imprinted on him all his life by his family and fits wonderfully with the Patriots organisational culture. He also comes from NFL bloodlines with his father playing in the NFL and CFL.

How Arkansas star Deatrich Wise Jr. learned the value of community service

5(Comp. 184)-TE- Michael Roberts- Toledo

I know I don’t value a 3rd tight end as much as many around here but I wouldn’t mind looking for an upgrade if possible. Roberts is an intriguing guy because he has good bulk, decent athleticism and a big catch radius. He is used primarily as a blocker, lining up all over the formation, but he is also an excellent red zone target (as evident by his 16 touchdowns in 2016). He’s not a big vertical threat as a receiver but he has excellent hands and good athleticism. He should be a good #3 TE option with the potential to develop. Someone on here threw out a Hooman comparison for Roberts and I think it’s a pretty good one.

7(244) and 7(255)- Just take the best special teamer available or a high risk/reward injury or character guy that falls

Nice mock @Wilfork#75 . I have no issues with any player you picked and that will fill out the team nicely.

I just watched Wise. Weird player. I love his size and length - so very Patriots and he has a hell of a bullrush. But my goodness, he's unathletic - he's slow for a 3-4 end. But, for a team that rushes 3 a lot, I wouldn't have an issue with him on day three. Having said that, he's so slow, I wonder if he could even make special teams.

You are 100% right with this one. No way Kraft signs off on this, the ghost of Myra would haunt him forever. I doubt anyone drafts him or even signs him as a UFA.

Decent RB are a dime a dozen, and he is just that, a decent RB, nothing special.
