I think if Belichick was 10 years younger Caserio would probably take one of these opportunities, but Belichick is 65 in a few months so Caserio probably figures this job is his at some point in the next 5-10 years. He makes good $ and has roots here. Better to stay and take over from Belichick whenever he retires.

I don't think there's any job to take from BB. Caserio seems to have been functioning as our GM for a while now, unless you're talking about taking the HC gig...

He has significant input on drafting, contracts and trades and works for the best organization in the sport. Additionally, he also can be part time coach during practices, workouts and combine drills.

Would getting the "title of GM" on paper really be that attractive to him compared to what he has here ?

It would have one major advantage: it would prevent him from being poached. Right now, the Patriots cannot prevent him from leaving for a job that would give him final say over the roster.

How much could he command in the open market?

What kind of coin did NE O & D coordinators earn this year?
How do their salaries compare to other coordinators?

I'm not diminishing Caserio's role at all as I think this is a huge role and requires Belichicks full confidence but Caserio works for Belichick, it's not the other way around.

With caserio staying another year, he will have officially been in the role longer than Pioli was.

You can make a very strong argument that I. The passed 8 seasons, we have done a better job of cap flexibility, in-season talent acquisition, and comparable draft records.

We are set up so well for the next decade, I don't blame him for wanting to stay here and see if he can win post Brady/BB. That would be a far bigger challenge than actually leaving, and I hope he is here long enough to see it through.

In an ego driven league of testosterone, there will always be plenty of men who want "to be the reason" the winning occurs & to be "the decision maker" for the franchise. Here, despite his excellent work, BB is and always will be "the man". Caserio will never get full recognition for his work, perhaps.

If BB retired in a few years, I wonder if his title would then change.

Caserio is Scott Pioli 2.0, and is one of the biggest keys to the Patriots' continued success.

Pioli really, i think hes better than pioli. It seemed the drafting got better after Pioli went to KC where he bombed.

I think Caserio does the vast majority of the legwork but he's doing it for Belichick, who makes the final call on everything. I don't believe Caserio signs any player without Belichick signing off on it, and the same goes for their draft system. And Caserio couldn't bring in any player if Belichick opposed it.

That sounds like a perfect system.
Throw in the fact Caserio knows that Belichick is looking for in a player and thats a great relationship between Head Coach and Personel.

Caserio isn't leaving until someone blows him away with money and gives him complete control and even then he might not go if the situation isn't right. I know he doesn't have the GM title here but he's as close to as a GM as you'll get with Belichick

There's no salary cap for team execs and coaches. Kraft (despite the anti-semitism from a certain subset) pays top dollar and gives BB everything he wants. Every FA that comes the NE has marveled at the facilities, the equipment the food (most famously, Corey Dillon in a 2004 Boston Magazine feature positively waxing poetic about the Alaskan crab legs in the team cafetaria - - I think they plied him with french fries in Cincy).

Caserio signed what must be an unheard of contract extension with the Pats before the last game of the 2014 season - - -6 years, through 2020.

I would think for him its all about the money. I mean if someone is going to increase your salary 33-100% more.. its probably tough to turn down for most people. Of course there are the really smart people who realize money isn't the be all end all and as long as your still making great bank and your happy then why mess with it.

Agree. But given that none of this falls under the salary cap I wouldnt understand why Kraft wouldn't just match the offer.

Did Pioli really bomb in KC. Even their 3-13 year (or whatever it was), there was 5 or 6 all-pros on that team. And, they immediately went back into the playoffs the first seasons Andy Reid was there without a wholesale change in talent. I think in hindsight people like to knock his performance, just like the do for Belichick in Cleveland.
