Gus Bradley For DC

I think Pepper left because he had maxed out under Belichick and wasn't going to get the DC position.
I was just thinking it's possible BB thought highly of him, he just likes Patricia better. Impossible to say though I guess. I think him and Johnson go back a long ways. Coached him with the Jets and Giants I believe.

Patricia might not want a head coaching job or just might not be suited for one. Not all competent coordinators are cut out to be head coaches.

Rex Ryan would disagree with you.

But if course, he'd be WRONG!!!

If I am Matt Patricia. I stay put.
He is not ready. I don't think there's any fantastic job out there for him. It will be one of those 2 year gigs that sets him back.

If I am Bill Belichick I disagree.
BB publicly stated this season that Matt should be considered for HC positions.

Still can't offer a valid response. Bradley is a good DC. Look at his track record.

What is his track record ?

Doesn't look like the Seattle defense lost a beat when he left...

Because his defenses sucks just look at the yardage stats.. and the lack of big highlight plays.. and we are always in zone.. and he let two superstars in Jones and Collins go.. and the team clearly hates him..

Did I miss any other stupidity that floats around ?

I hope he sticks around for 1-2 more years.. also there is no way we will hire from the outside..

He needs to get his "look" down. I mean year after year with the same beard and the same cap and the same sweater. Who does he think he is? He's not ready to be the "face" of a franchise.

This is a joke if people are wondering.

Its obvious that BB felt Patricia would be a better DC than Pepper.

We can speculate why but I go out on a limb and say one of the reasons was BB thought Blackbeard had more potential and room for growth.

I think that is still speculation. For all we know BB may be mentoring him as a HC every day - just like he did with Josh in 2008 - who was a train wreck. He has even endorsed him as a bonafide HC candidate. I don't think he would do that with someone that hasn't done what he needed to do to be prepared for the role.

With that said - and to your point the only way to truly know is to get the job and see what happens. Sometimes mistakes are the best way to learn.

Personally, I think the main reason these coaches fail is because their teams suck
Yep, it's totally speculation.

That is the only cosmetic drawback. If he trimmed the beard on a regular basis and wore a baseball hat forward hed be fine.

IMO if these owners are hung up on appearances then you don't want to work for them anyway.

Have you seen the goober coaching the Giants?

Patricia has the mad genius thing going on, I think it's great.

Pepper Johnson could be interested in coming back to be the DC too. Wasn't it between him and Patricia back in the day? Eventually left to get a shot at DC elsewhere.

He's the D line coach with the Jets now so he might view that as a better position than DC with the Patriots.....just kidding....
Seems like he has the Belichick thing down in terms of dealing with the media.....
Jets assistant Pepper Johnson is salty with media, for some reason
EDIT= he's coaching the dysfunctional Jets..you'd be salty too....

Bradley and Belichick run two completely different defensive philosophies. He won't be coming here in that event. More likely he goes back to Seattle in some capacity.

I don't think he's ready. I think there's just a seasoning process that goes on that isn't quite complete with him.

Having said that, I think sometimes guys need to get that first head-coaching job for a couple years, it doesn't go so well, then they go back to a coordinator gig, and then their second HC job is when they put it all together.
How would you know if he is "seasoned"

Of course I hope he stays, but put yourself in MP's position and I doubt he sees it the same way as you do. Getting a HC gig will boost his salary and his image by a factor of ten. There's probably not much left to do as DC of NEP, it'll largely be more of the same. What's the down side? Almost every HC gets a 2 year shot and usually has at least one extra year on the contract. If it all goes badly like it did for Josh, he'll still be richer, wiser, and a strong candidate for a DC gig in a few years. It seems BB has no succession plan in place so there's no particular reason to stay around here, unless he just really enjoys the gig and doesn't want the pressure of being a HC, but most people in his position are looking to become HC.

I doubt Patricia gets a HC gig right now. Maybe in 3-4 years

Who was the last "outside guy" Belichick brought in? Dom Capers? And I don't even think Bill brought him in; I think Krafty Bob brought in Capers in case BB got suspended for a season....

I remember the days of getting psyched for potential assistant coaches/coordinators....remember how awesome the offense was supposed to be with Ernie Zampese?

Agree just not seeing it either but maybe in a few years if the Defense can sustain a high level.

I'm assuming this is because Gus Bradley was DC for a dominant Seahawks defense in 2012? That D finished 1st in points allowed, 4th in yards allowed, and led to his name being circulated as a hot head coach prospect.

Except the two seasons after he left (2013, 2014), the Seahawks IMPROVED, finishing 1st in points allowed AND yards allowed before taking a tiny step back in 2015, finishing 1st in points allowed but 2nd in yards allowed.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars over those 3 years would not go above 24th in either points or yards allowed. This year, they did step up to 7th in yards allowed, though they're still 28th in points allowed. The early Seahawks teams were also in the 20s in both points and yards allowed until Bradley's 3rd year, which coincided with the team drafting Earl Thomas in 2010 and Richard Sherman in 2011.

Who do you think was the real reason for the improvement? The players? Or the DC?

Then there's this:

Why would you want one of the biggest losers in the game to work for us? What next? Jeff Fisher for OC if Josh leaves?
