Report: surgery for Gronk

This news obviously sucks and we're a worse team without Gronk. I think we can agree on that.

But Brady, McDaniels and Bill should come in for some serious criticism if they can't put together a very good offense with the weapons remaining. This ain't the last time we lost Gronk and had to put Matt Slater out there.

Road to the Super Bowl is going to be tough, but frankly I was expecting a pretty tough road with Gronk.

HFA advantage's a priority. Brady can't lock on one guy. He has to spread it around.

I haven't read the whole thread yet but...Am I the only one that is not too bothered by this news? We finally actually have some other weapons on offense. I don't think this team lives and dies by Gronk like it used to. I mean it sucks, he is a special player but I think they will be fine. I'm more concerned about the defense down the stretch against tougher teams.

I agree with this. I thought the loss of Edelman last year was worse - not because Edelman is a better player than Gronk, but because the offense runs through Edelman. We have 4 good WRs, two good pass-catching RBs, a good TE, a good RB and (importantly) an excellent blocker in the run game in Develin. If McDaniels cannot produce with that (and the best QB in the game) he is pretty damn worthless.

When Derby is the solution you have a problem. Stop crying, all NFL teams are susceptible to this

I'm not sure how 6 receptions for 65 yards would change anything for anyone. Playing hindsight on Dec. 1st is crazy.

1. Humans are not designed to crash into each other full speed
2. It's football. It's a game.
3. Football players play football

Why on earth would they use IR return designation on Jacoby Brisett????

Because it doesn't matter that much at this point in time. If someone has a serious injury there is generally not a realistic chance of getting him back in time for the season anyway anymore. And if someone important has an injury you just keep his spot open and sacrifice the fringe player on the 53.

I suppose the benefit of Brissett learning in his rookie year behind the scenes is more valuable to BB than a potential player #53.

He was fit enough to play. Got hurt on a football play . Happens. Sometimes the explanations are as simple as much as they have tragic effects.

I agree. I said that because a lot of folks thought he was rushed. He did have a week off prior to NYJ.

Send a 6'5" 265 pound TE who is coming back from injury on multiple long fly patterns.

Awesome.

Same thing happened against the Texans in January 2013.

Here's an idea - - how 'bout you don't play with fire and LESSEN the chance (not eliminate, mind you) for injury to the guy in his first game back by not sending him on Shawn Jefferson patterns?

It's like we traded Jimmiy Graham.

5th for Aj. Derby i would trade again today

Even with this news, I still don't fear the AFC playoffs.

And there's a chance he's back for the Super Bowl anyway.

Glad AJ Derby is out in Denver catching 10 yard passes on 3d and 8....

Malcolm Mitchell time!!!!!! Hope this kid's ready to be a playmaker for us. Also hogan has to step up.

So if he suffered the injury in the Seahawks game, and rather then getting surgery a week ago, he instead played the Jets game with an already ruptured disc?

I wouldn't assume he ruptured it in the SEA game.

There weren't the same kind of reports of Gronk moving "gingerly" and having to hold onto things after the SEA game that there were after the NYJ game. I think it's two completely separate injuries -- the pneumothorax in the SEA game and the blown disk in the NYJ game.

Is it that hard to believe that there were two separate injuries? That he hurt his chest in Seattle and hurt his back against NY?

That said, ultimately (depending on where it is in the back), I wouldn't be surprised if they were related. That is to say, his back slipped when he fell against the Jets, but that only happened because his chest was still swollen and his back would have been fine if there was no other swelling around it.

OF COURSE they are two different injuries. But any sports doctor will tell you an athlete overcompensates for one weak area if he is weakened in another when he comes back. The way he took the falls Sunday could easily have been affected by his previous injury. It happens all the time.

Question is 'why the long fly patterns for him in that situation'?
