Yeah you're really in a sad state of denial if you don't realize the defense is bad when even Belichick indicated it publicly.
BB has never stated or implied the 2016 defense is bad.

He said he was disappointed and he could have been referring to Collins.

He also will find fault where faults are apparantly non existant

It's middle of the pack. I am hoping flowers get's more playing time. Long hasn't provided much of a pass rush.

I don't know about stats, but if belichick (and his pal lombardi) says the D is not good it's good enough for me.
Here's what it is. The Pats defense is obviously good enough to get them to the AFC Championship game...this team goes every damn year. And they've got enough solid personnel on defense where the numbers are going to be pretty good.

Comes down to one thing. Can they make a stop when they have to. Can somebody make a play. That is the question, and that has been the concern to an extent even this year, in games that were pretty comfortably in hand because of the offense (Pittsburgh, Buffalo), can somebody make a play on 3rd down? That's it. The team has parted ways with three guys who, to varying levels, were able to do that, from every now and then to sometimes: Easley, Jones, and Collins.

If the Pats fall short of the Super Bowl (assuming decent health) there will be a whole bunch of finger pointing, but 99% chance it will come down to the defense not making a play when it has to.

Note that I think the Pats are winning it, in part because I simply can not envision what other team would.

edit: oh, and look forward to watching Lewis play again.

Well last year it was on the offense especially the horrible offensive line play. The defense's different this year. I feel this team need's hfa more then any of the other teams.

What happened to this thread

Someone made a comment about the defense being average and I responded with a the PPG Stat, alluding to the fact the haven't been average in that stat.

This defense has been gashed

Every team in the league on defense has been "gashed".

Denver just gave up close to 400 yards to SD.

Seattle gave up 450 yards to Arizona a couple of weeks ago, in fact Seattle has given up at least 370 yards the last 3 weeks.

Minnesota just allowed 400 yards to the Bears.

Yes PPG doesn't tell the whole story. This defense has been gashed and has had its issues with getting off of the field on 3rd down.

FYI.

3rd down efficiency hasn't been the problem in the last two games.

30% vs Bills
31% vs Steelers
40% vs Bengals

They have improved from ranked 27th to 18th in the last three weeks.

But they do rank 5th in defensive snaps.

Cool. I guess our offense sucks too because Bill said the team needs to pass and run the ball better than it did after Sunday (when they put up 41 points.)

It's like some of you are watching the team for the first time ever and are unaware of the fact that Bill is tougher on the team after they win in order to prevent complacency. He's constantly trying to make the team better. You literally hear the exact same thing every year, regardless of how many teams NE has obliterated in the first half of the season.

There are areas of improvement on both sides of the ball, as is the case with every team every year. As long as that's the case, you won't ever hear Bill be satisfied.

The defense isn't the 85 Bears, nor does it need to be. It's good enough to make NE by far the most complete team in the league, however.

Clearly our offense is Elite and that will carry us to the AFC title game.. where we go from there will depend on not just the Offense but the D as well... I already have seen it time and time again with this team. The offense will get slowed down against a good D and on that day our average defense will end up giving up 3 or 4 huge drives that puts us in a dog fight and in the end we may fall short because the D couldn't get off the field.

"This team?" When has that happened to the 2016 Patriots? The Buffalo game where we started an injured 3rd string QB making his 2nd ever NFL start?

I am talking about the last 15 years. Depending on just the offense won't get us a ring.. They need to get better on D if they are going to win a Super Bowl. Which I believe they can BTW.

Those past teams have nothing to do with the current team. Completely different players at most positions.

Check out Rich Hills article on the pass rush. Interesting reading.

Agreed on Flowers. Its time.

Eh. Yes overall but you can't do it by overall because there are teams that have played only 7 games. You have to do it based on Per Game.

On per game basis NE is tied for #11 with Seattle

TOP Against wise NE is 11th best in the NFL with opposing offenses only holding the ball 29:36.

I don't care about your ****ing points allowed at this time. My eyes tell me that are defense is pretty average.. and if they keep playing the way they do, they will give up more points going forward.

Mike Lombardi seems to think the NE D is not playing very well over all.
Dude...bold = rethink this

Thanks. Yep I missed that.

Pretty good summary of Pats losses..

Got a link for that, don't want to have to look.

But second (third?) the Flowers thing....championship seasons have that unexpected boost a lot of times, he'd be a good one.
