This is exactly right. This trade doesn't make any sense whatsoever, because we could've held onto Collins for the rest of the season, and then picked up a compensation pick in 2018 after he signs with a new team in the offseason. Like you said, the pick probably would've been a 4th.
So I guess the advantages to this are:
We get a 3rd instead of a 4th, and,
We get the pick in 2017 instead of 2018
Is that really worth forfeiting Collins for the rest of the year?
We would have gotten a high compensatory pick at the end of the round, in return we get a Browns third round pick that is most probably shortly after our second round pick. The difference are around 60 slots.
I have no opinion yet on the trade as I am waiting for the trade deadline to come first but just wanna point out that the difference between the picks the potential compensatory and what we actually got is substantial.
