Patriots Player Departure PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

This is exactly right. This trade doesn't make any sense whatsoever, because we could've held onto Collins for the rest of the season, and then picked up a compensation pick in 2018 after he signs with a new team in the offseason. Like you said, the pick probably would've been a 4th.

So I guess the advantages to this are:
We get a 3rd instead of a 4th, and,
We get the pick in 2017 instead of 2018

Is that really worth forfeiting Collins for the rest of the year?

We would have gotten a high compensatory pick at the end of the round, in return we get a Browns third round pick that is most probably shortly after our second round pick. The difference are around 60 slots.

I have no opinion yet on the trade as I am waiting for the trade deadline to come first but just wanna point out that the difference between the picks the potential compensatory and what we actually got is substantial.

It's too little. a 3rd round pick for COLLINS is waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy too little.

We got a 2nd round AND a former 1st round for Chandler Jones.

Bill has gone completely mad. This is unbelievable
Could be a quid pro quo once Bill is ready to trade Jimmy.

so cleveland gets him for 8 games? Why would they give up anything?

They have the space to resign him or franchise him if they want. We clearly were not going to come to an agreement with his representation.

Why even bring up Cooper as a former first? His value was nowhere near that.

this could be a randy moss type deal . Great player started playing poorly because of contract issues. BB decided to cut ties.

of course some in the media trying to explain it.

Tom "E for Erroneous" Curran is the ultimate tool. To blame Collins for the Denver loss after the Oline totally poopoo'd all over itself all game long, and Gots missed an XP, is pretty nose up Bills arse. If the Oline plays half decent, the Pats win that game going away. That's not to say Collins sucked on those plays, but to scapegoat Collins for the loss over the Oline is a bit much.

Are you saying the report is incorrect and we got the Browns 3rd round pick, not their compensatory pick?

One other thought. With plenty of potential cap available, maybe their planning a bit of a FA splurge this off-season which would negate a comp pick for Collins.

The priority is signing Butler - he is nearly irreplaceable. Pass defense AND tackling.

Could someone explain to me how the 3rd round comp pick we're getting from Cleveland is better than the 3rd round comp pick we would've got anyway when he walked this offseason? Given how many big-ticket FAs we have, I think it's reasonable to assume we would've got a comp pick.

There is no guarantee that we'd have gotten a 3rd round pick. Like so many, you forget that the Pats would have had to sign less eligible free agents than they lost for them to be eligible for a comp pick. This guarantees they get a pick in 2017. The other way doesn't.
