Linebacker Elandon Roberts also earned acclaim from Belichick. The rookie linebacker shared snaps with starter Dont’a Hightower, who’s nursing a knee injury, after the Patriots got out to a big lead. Roberts led the team with seven combined tackles, was a standout in the run game and allowed two catches for just 6 yards on three targets.

“He’s worked really hard and gets better every week,” Belichick said about the Houston product. “He and (defensive tackle) Woody Hamilton both played a decent amount defensively. We’ll see how it looks on film. They’re a couple of young guys who came in and played and showed up. Everybody just keeps working to get better, and when they get an opportunity, they show up and make the most of it.”

Hamilton another good roster news of the day.

Hamilton was signed off the Patriots’ practice squad Saturday and recorded three tackles as New England beefed up their defensive line while facing a team that came into Week 5 averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

Having someone cover for Hightower for a while until he is not hobbled by his knee injury anymore would be huge. I am constantly concerned that he will completely blow up his knee and end up on IR. He was clearly affected by it last week showing almost 0 cutting ability and missing tackle after tackle..

It is a real concern. While Roberts led the team in tackles, HT registered only 1. Reported to have a torn meniscus, he is clearly hobbled and I would not be at all surprised if he undergoes surgery at some point.

I just hope it doesn't end up being one of those situations where the Pats together with HT decided to not go for surgery immediately but try to get control of the situation via rehab work and the players ends up a few weeks later on IR anyway..

I'd rather he misses the middle part of the season and we get him back for the final stretch. That being said, I have no clue how long the recovery period of his injury exactly is..

It is a 3-4 week recovery from surgery. Kimbrel just did it. I wonder if they might try to wait till the bye, but if he doesn't imptove they might not get there. Worst case he is still back for the stretch run.

He looked like someone that was hungry for a bigger role and studied the tape. He was flying to the ball.

Maybe High cam come in and go 1-2-3 in a non save situation. Ridiculous

If they are going to IR him the need to do it now so he can make it back by Dec

It's one game, who was that CB who got claimed on waivers last year and everyone loved for a bit?

Robert's lack of size turns us off but he was supposed to be the best tackling middle linebacker in the 2016 draft.

I had to get my training camp roster sheet out today! What a nice performance.

Everybody remind me why so many posters labeled Roberts the "obvious easy cut" for when Brady & Nink returned?

He's a fun player to watch, and an easy guy to root for. I'm loving this rookie class so far.
I'd say about 95 percent didn't even have him making the opening day 53 man roster.

I actually lucked out and had him, not due to scouting smarts or football knowledge, but simply due to the fact that I thought we were coming up a bit short for that position, numbers-wise. I also was a bit skeptical of Shae McClellin, and still am to be honest.

The postseason weeks count too, don't they? I remember the ARZ Cards holding out hope that RB Chris Johnson would be able to return for the SB if they made it that far.

Going by that, the team could technically choose to wait all the way until mid-November and still have him back for mid-January's first playoff game (assuming we'd get a bye of course).

I rarely create a thread, but came to the forum with the intention of making one to apologize to ERob.

I thought his college tape looked like a guy whose game and body weren't fit for the NFL. Too light, and primarily a north/south defender who was reckless with his disruption. I thought he would get eaten alive at this level and would basically have to change his entire game to be the least bit successful on this defense. His numbers looked like simply a product of his role on a college defense.

I was wrong, even if this was the only game he plays in the NFL. He showed he fit in on this D.

I'm not one to comment on other guys' lower half, but they showed his backside in a huddle, and I thought it was Sheard's butt before I looked at the number. Definitely put on some weight.

I didn't have Roberts on a cut list, since I didn't make one, but the reasoning seems obvious:

  • Someone had to go
  • It was going to be a back of the roster guy (meaning only someone who wasn't a certain starter or ST maven)
  • Cooper had been kept on the team all that time, despite missing essentially all of camp and all season, to date
  • Lewis wasn't coming back and Bolden is hurt, so Foster was an unlikely choice
  • Cannon was banged up, so an OT was an unlikely choice
  • DB would have been a tough cut because Rowe isn't ready
