Saw this on a Colts thread and I'm pretty sure it was by Colts fans who said they heard the news on a local TV station.

http://boards.espn.go.com/boards/mb/mb?sport=nfl&id=ind&tid=1205114&lid=3

If its true, big blow to the Colts DL as he was their 2nd best player during their D being flatout dominant in the playoffs last year....

ESPN message boards don't tend to have the highest level of reliability or intelligence though so not sure.

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

Its going to be difficult for them to make a trade for a defensive tackle like they did last year. last season they surrendered a 2nd for McFarland. this year in the draft they gave up next years first for rookie Offensive lineman tony ugoh. if they have to give up a 2nd this year for the likes of warren sapp. they wont be picking until the third round. talk aboun mortgaging your future.

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

I don't think mortgaging your future is bad when you've got Peyton or BRady under center, might as well win when ya can since chances are you arent going to replace a franchise QB with another one. However, yeah I do doubt they deal their 2nd for a DT this year. Also, I don't think the Raiders want to deal Sapp since he is a mentor for that young D.

More importantly though, is McFarland even inj? I've only heard it on multiple message boards. No ESPN, indystar, etc mention of it....

No one thought Mcfarland was worth a 2nd and the colts pulled the trigger on that. If they were desperate enough and the Raiders done see Sapp around in the near future they will get rid of him for a second. Supply and demand. It's like being by Gillette for training camp in 100 degree weather, you would never spend 4 bucks on bottled water in any other situation, but your in 100 degree weather and you need water of course you'd give up 4 dollars. if the Colts are feeling the heat they'll pull the trigger.

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

I imagine the rallying cry from Colts fans will be "he wasn't that good anyways, we're better off". Let me count, is that 5 or 6 starters from last year's D gone?

Not that you wish injury on anyone though, right?

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

Doubt the Raiders see Sapp as done. He had a good year last year and also Colts likely can't pay him with FA coming up for sanders, clark and both starting G's.

However, this McFarland thing might be a bad report anyways, first heard it on message boards last night and there has been no mention since....

i dont think i wrote the word wish, you wrote that, all im saying is im not going to be upset if our arch rival gets the injury bug, are you wishing it since you brought it up?

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

A couple of posters on Indy Star have reported hearing it on a local TV News report yesterday. That is apparently the only outlet reporting it but they are citing multiple sources. He apparently left practice early on Friday, and there was this from Dungy on a couple of players having mostly (?) precautionary MRI's done on Saturday in an article yesterday dealing primarily with the release of Corey Simon:

"Missing Colts — Several Indianapolis defensive starters were missing from the workout Saturday.

Strong-side linebacker Rob Morris, defensive tackle Anthony McFarland and defensive end Robert Mathis were back in Indianapolis undergoing MRI’s as a precautionary measure. Mathis had been limited to one practice a day this week while McFarland left Friday’s afternoon workout early.

“We had some guys actually getting some MRI’s [Saturday] back in Indianapolis. Most of it is just precautionary,” Dungy said. The extent of the injuries were not disclosed, but the Colts coach said they had occurred in recent practice sessions.

“Just from different things happening in practice,” he said. “Just trying to be sure before we break for the weekend.”

Also sitting out Saturday were cornerback Tanard Davis, running back Kenton Keith, defensive end Bo Schobel, offensive tackle Gabe Hall, defensive end Ben Ishola, defensive tackle Quinn Pit****, offensive tackle Charlie Johnson, wide receiver Devin Aromashodu, outside linebacker Keith O’Neil, and defensive tackle Tom Johnson."

Whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy. I was being sarcastic. Lighten up a little.

That is basically their entire D line. I wonder if this has anything to do with them not getting their usual time off after the season was finished to rest and heal? :D

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

I can't find any evidence of a mcfarland injory anywhere, so before anyone gets too excited, remember what happened when a local television affiliate reported a bogus rumor about a Patriots player.

Come on, I think most of us read it as "let's see if they could/can overcome the rash of injuries that affected the Pats the last few years and could they be as successful??" It's not wishing it on a team, it's a statement of opinion.

Well, they did send him for an MRI...

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

Al Davis will hold out until the trade deadline trying to get a first for Sapp even if everybody else knows it's a pipe dream so if the rumors are true about McFarland they are a ways off from help.

I don't blame the Colts for sending a #2 to Tampa for him because they knew it was going to be a bottom fifth of the round pick and as is it got them over the top and is the last pick of the round.

The Pats caught more grief in the national media for giving up a 2nd for Dillon or a 4th for Moss than the Colts did for a 2nd for McFarland but that's just standard operating procedure for the talking heads so at this point it just makes me laugh.

Re: O/T McFarland out for year?

I think it's entirely possible that the Colts got good value from Booger for one season in which they won a Superbowl. But he could end up like Corey, who was still well worth a 2nd rounder for us for that one season...

He was struggling in Tampa and oft injured. He rebounded somewhat when reunited with Dungy. Pride and adreneline will do that, as it did with Corey. And it got Booger his 2nd ring. But these guys usually can't maintain on adreneline, so it will be interesting to see if the trade pays further dividends or if he was more like Corey in providing a one year bump you still would have made the trade for followed by a slow fade.

This would leave the Colts with quantity but not quality at DT. Keep in mind they lost Tripplett to the Bills last year, Corey Simon was just cut, and Montae Reagor was cut and signed by the Eagles.

Here's how the Colts have fared at DL the past few seasons:

2003:
DE starters: Freeney, Brock
DE reserves: Scioli, Bratzke, Mathis
DT starters: Tripplett, Reagor
DT reserve: J. Williams

2004:
DE starters: Freeney, Brock
DE reserves: Mathis, Scioli, J. Mallard
DT starters: Reagor, J. Williams
DT reserves: Tripplett, J. Stewart

(DE J. Thomas on IR)

2005:
DE starters: Freeney, Brock
DE reserves: Mathis, J. Thomas
DT starters: Simon, Reagor
DT reserves: Tripplett, J. Williams, D. Reid

(DT V. Burns and DE J. Welsh on IR)

2006:
DE starters: Freeney, Mathis
DE reserves: J. Thomas, R. LaCasse, B. Schobel
DT starters: Brock, McFarland
DT reserve: D. Reid

(J. Welsh on IR, Reagor on Non-Football Injury, Simon on Non-Football Illness)

2007:
DE starters: Freeney, Mathis
DE reserves: J. Thomas, R. LaCasse, B. Schobel, K. Dawson, J. Charleston, N. Burchette
DT starters: Brock, Pit****
DE reserves: Klecko, D. Reid, T. Johnson, E. Johnson, R. Meekins

(McFarland to IR?)

Yeah, regardless of what McFarland's situation is this year or next I have a feeling the Colts wouldn't change a thing. And I wouldn't if I were them.

Now we just have to make sure they end up on the long list of one time winners and not the short list of multiple time winners :rocker:

Apparently Florio and PFT heard something even before the MRI comments from Dungy yesterday...

BOOGER HAS A BOO-BOO, BUT HOW BAD IS IT?

On the same day that the Colts terminated the contract of free-agent bust Corey Simon, the guy whom the Colts acquired last season to take his place was undergoing an MRI.

And before word of the Booger McFarland MRI broke, an anonymous tipster advised us that the injury is serious, and likely season-ending.

Though we have not yet corroborated this tip, and are not officially reporting that McFarland is out for the year, we can understand why the Colts aren't announcing the severity of the injury, if it indeed is severe. With an even greater need in the interior of a defensive line that was getting shredding against the run before it somehow picked it up in the playoffs, the Colts would likely like to finagle a trade with a team that doesn't realize the urgency that the team might now be facing, because that would drive the price tag north.

Stay tuned.
