Gene Wilder, who regularly stole the show in such comedic gems as “The Producers,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Stir Crazy,” died Monday at his home in Stamford, Conn. His nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman said he died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83.

His nephew said in a statement, “We understand for all the emotional and physical challenges this situation presented we have been among the lucky ones — this illness-pirate, unlike in so many cases, never stole his ability to recognize those that were closest to him, nor took command of his central-gentle-life affirming core personality. The decision to wait until this time to disclose his condition wasn’t vanity, but more so that the countless young children that would smile or call out to him “there’s Willy Wonka,” would not have to be then exposed to an adult referencing illness or trouble and causing delight to travel to worry, disappointment or confusion. He simply couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world.

Gene Wilder, ‘Willy Wonka’ Star and Comedic Icon, Dies at 83

Rest in peace

I hate his work, and enjoy seeing him shuffle off this mortal coil.

May the Lord rest you and keep you, Gene.

Shank's older brother...

We just lost one of the greats.

Loved him in all the Mel Brooks movies.
So true, he was comic genius in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Loved him with Richard Pryor too (Silver Streak I think was the title of one of the movies). Too young at 83 to pass away. RIP Gene.

My kids liked Gene as Willy Wonka ... RIPmany will miss you.
We wore out our Willy Wonka VHS tape had to buy another.

A very nice and appropriate sentiment from his family there... no doubt a sincere rationale for keeping his suffering private and make his memory one that brings a smile - not for Wilder's sake but all of ours

Best memory - when I was a kid a friend died unexpectedly - the shock of dealing with death at such a young age made me wonder if I'd ever laugh again

Well, that night my sister and I went to the small town theater's showing of Young Frankenstein to try to get our minds off of it

It took Gene Wilder probably all of 5 minutes to answer my question of whether I'd ever laugh again

In fact, the only question from that point on in the movie was, would I ever stop?

Icon indeed
