If Jimmy Looks a Franchise QB, Would You Trade Brady?

BB recently had a press conference which made his position pretty clear. Your thread, in light of that, seems trollish.

I think it's in BB's best interest to say that regardless if he intends to trade Brady to maximize his value. I'm not saying he will trade him but there is no advantage to saying otherwise.

OK, I will make this simple. I have real doubt that Jimmy stays around to be a six year back up. I also have doubts that we will pay him his market value if he is franchise level (big if, only Bill will know) Therefore, he will be gone at the end of the year, hence Brissett coming in as QB3. Someone will walk as that won't be the case for the next few years.

If you have a franchise QB as back up, a proper succession plan will need to happen. Hardly any QB's are franchise material, getting one isn't a case of going to Wallmart so tough decisions may need to be made.

Not even the worst GM in the world will just let things meander until Brady retires and hopes for the best.

That isn't outlandish.
I'm still confused by your responses to my answer. I never said Jimmy would accept being a 6 year back up. I said if he proves to be that good you choose between TB and JG 2 seasons from now and trade the other. If TB is still your choice then franchise and trade JG. If you think TB doesn't have much left you trade him franchise Jimmy.
And if you think Jimmy is a franchise QB then you better be ready to pay his market price.
Lastly I don't consider it meandering if you think you have 2 franchise QBs to hold them both as long as reasonably possible. So long as Jimmy is on his rookie contract it's very reasonable. All I'm really saying is this decision can be put off until JG is no longer on the rookie deal and the Franchise tag at that point still leaves you with your choice of either JG or TB at that point.

If Jimmy beats Brady's 2007 TD pass number in a 4 game stretch, I'd consider it.

Don't worry Brit if Jimmy G Plays well many will change their Trade Him tune. Just imagine if the Packers had traded Rodgers because they still had a much older Favre...things that make you go hmmmn. I am going to go with whatever decision BB makes.
They will all want Brady Cut if the GPS man is great during BRADY'S ABSENCE . Fans are fickle not loyal.

BB could have used the "100% ready" copout.
BB could have just said "We're on to Arizona".
Instead, BB made his disdain for the notion abundantly clear.

Ok let's throw out some hypothetical numbers after week 4. The pats are 4-0 with the number one offense in football. Jimmy has looked ridiculous throwing 70% 15 Tds and 1700 yards with 1 pick. Seeing this the media has created an absolute storm over who you keep. Bill puts out feelers and finds a team willing to part with two number 1's for EITHER QB. Who do you keep? I love Tom and it would wound me to My soul and I would give him the respect of asking him and making sure he was ok with it...but youth does matter and I would keep Jimmy in that senerio. Odds that all happens? Bout the same as me hitting Powerball but this is a message board where we can wonder what we would do with a winning Powerball ticket. Short of that you keep the GOAT and get what you can from Jimmy.

OK my sarcastic friends....this was just a question! LOL

What is your succession plan though, because there is no doubt that the big QB prospects will be taken by the time we are picking. Letting the team have 10 years of mediocrity for the sake of two years for a legend just doesn't make sense to me, and to be fair, BB has never had an issue trading anyone!

If you can give me an idea what you will do on day one after Brady, that would be great!

The day Brady leaves I will be done as a fan of the NYJFL. I'm kind of looking forward to it, but of course I want Brady to play for as long as possible.

BB has never traded a player as successful as Brady, but then there aren't any of those. I doubt that BB will ever trade Tommy LomBrady though.

They say that elite QB's don't fall from trees, but Brady did. No reason why it can't happen again.

If that's the case, you take the Carson Wentz/Jared Goff type offer that would come in for Jimmy. Multiple firsts and multiple other picks.

I am not convinced they would get that kind of offer. No cheap rookie contract and Jimmy is a few years older. Granted the doubt of are they actually a franchise QB is gone but there is still the question of was it the pats system or all those weapons? Can he do it on a not so stacked team like Brady can? And just for the sake of argument I made it the same compensation for either QB. Like I said the odds of it happening are next to zilch but it can be fun to think about what Bill would do with all those high picks. Can you imagine what the rams would be like with BB as coach/GM after the RGIII trade?

I believe Jimmy is only a year older than Carson Wentz. He also comes with one cheap year. And if he plays to the scenario you painted, I think he nets a serious haul, particularly as next years draft QBs don't look that exciting.

Could be. I can honestly say I don't know squat about college ball and rely on experts like yourself to form my opinions on who to pay attention to during the combine. The idea of BB with 2 firsts and 2 seconds for the next 2 years or 2 firsts the next 3 years does make one rather giddy.

We have Jimmy G for 1 more year after this. If he shows well this year and we think he is a franchise QB we keep him no matter what it takes. That is the #1 priority of the team. Franchise QBs are too hard to get.

It depends a lot on next years FA for me. If I am to be objective about it. Brady has no more than 3 years left most likely including this one. So after this year it is 2 years.

If it looks like we need to go through a rebuilding phase and can not likely compete nearly as well next year then i would probably be open to pulling the trigger provided a team made me a good enough offer.

If we are going to be 1 of the top 2 or 3 teams again next year which is very possible then we keep Brady and try to win another ring and then deal with this problem the next year.

For those memory impaired, even Brady didn't look like a Franchise QB after 4 starts.
Even if JAG lights 'em up, as I hope but doubt he does, way too few games to judge a QB. The NFL is littered with never made it guys who looked great at QB for a few games.

After 2001 and a Superbowl ring, there was still a debate on who the Pats should keep, Brady or Bledsoe.

Jimmy is not the equal of the current Tom Brady, but he could very well equal Brady's first 4 games as starting QB.

Is that true though? Serious question. Is the NFL "littered" with those guys?

I'm not in the "either/or" camp on this issue. IF Garoppolo looks like the Real McCoy, they must find a way to keep both quarterbacks until Brady retires -- even if it burdens the cap for a couple years.

By my math, the QB franchise tag could be over $22 million in 2018. Do people actually support using that on Garoppolo and having $44 million in cap space allocated to the QB position, or am I taking this "whatever it takes" too literally?
