We're on to 2016. Think FA/Trades as in 2007 rather than the #60 Draft choice

When the last time BB had to give Roger his @1 pick, he lit up the FA market and trades that prior year. They picked up seven Free Agents and traded for Welker (kind of a trade) and Moss who were both Pro Bowlers. Although everyone that is at least partially intelligent believes this “penalty” is a rip off, we have to hope that this Draft does not become the worst Draft ever as in 2008.

Every year we talk and dream about 2007. FA’s and Trades helped TB and were within one fluke play of perfection. Why are the Pats still concerned about the distant future while TB is in his twilight? Draft choices are nice but they are a crap shoot for three years of maturing for result. TB might not play that long.

Obviously a key move would be "if" the Lions cut Megatron, you through the kitchen sink at a 30 year old player to go out for a last good run for a few years with Brady. Can you imagine the Broncos trying to cover he and Gronk? I don't want Megatron for stretching the field. He might fly once or twice a year. I want him for Brady's sweet spot or short and medium and jump balls. You can't triple Team Gronk with a Megatron.

Thanks to Miguel's numbers we are about $6mm under. Cleaning out the roster I see Mayo, Amendola, Cannon, LaFell, Scott Chandler, Kline and Dobson as potential cuts or salary re-negotiations. That is almost $23 million. So you can go into FA with $30mm.. You don't have to keep a lot of money for Draft picks. You have maybe a third rounder comp. for Revis (you can trade this year) and three 6ths. Anyway, the Draft is not going to have a big impact on the 2016 Pats IMO.

The only UDFA I want to resign is DT Akeim Hicks. He played well and could be a key in the future.

Alshon Jeffries WR. The obvious best bet FA for the Pats. Better than LaFell and Dobson and although I love Amendola, still better than Danny. That is $12mm we have tied up in three basically back up WRs. Jeffries gets done for less $ than that. Megatron might be done for that number but he is still with the Lions.

Don't stop there. Mohammad Sanu WR from the Bengals. Also a Rutgers guy. Makes plays and has size at 6'2" and 210. He is their #3 WR but they can't sign he and Marvin Jones.

As a side bar, we have Dion Lewis coming back. Why not give James White a full off season at WR? He is bigger than JE. TB trusts him. Let him have reps on the full tree.

TE Coby Fleener. He had over fifty catches for the Colts. He's 27 , 6'6" and 251lbs and he has speed. We thought this was Chandler but a fail on that. This is a no brainer if the $ is right. The Colts have a TE decision to make with two FAs. Brent Celek would be my TE backup here. He is 31 and making $5mm with the Eagles who will want him to take a pay cut or cut him. A better blocker than Fleener. He still is good for 30 catches a season.

Kelvin Beachum is an athletic LOT for the Steelers. Was having an outstanding year. ACL will drive down his $ number but he is only 26. If we can get him for Kline+Cannon money (about $5mm) we do that. He could move inside unless Solder is still slow to recover. He can give us depth and an instant OT upgrade at least over Cannon and Fleming. Can't see us waiting for a Draft choice to mature. Beachum is a player that the Steelers would like to keep. Would help us and hurt the Steelers.

Here is my shocker. S Eric Weddle "has a skill set that tons of teams are looking for to shore up the back end of their defenses. His age (30) works against him, but few safeties have been better over the last five years". This guy is smart and fits BB's wheelhouse. He and McCourty would be special paired as Saftey tandem. Let Chung play your hybrid OLB that he plays well. Buchannon of the Cards is a converted Safety. Mistakes happened in the DB backfield yesterday like on the first Denver TD. I can't see where we would not get "Rodney" years out of Weddle and an on the field smart guy who make more plays frankly than McCourty.

Thoughts? Changes?

We need a good WR to replace Lafell. That's a fact. He's regressed to the mean that was his career up until last season. We don't need Julio Jones but we need 2014 Lafell.

On the WR front, I think either of the Bengals WRs could work here - Marvin Jones or Mohammed Sanu. I also like Travis Benjamin and Andre Holmes as potentially affordable additions that allow them to spend on other positions too (like the OL).

why do you care about a receiver that's going down 40-45 yards downfield, when your QB doesn't have enough time for his #1 option to create separation a mere 10 yards away....

I wasn't aware that a team could only sign 1 player during the offseason.

What's the scouting report on Marvin Jones and Sanu? A lot of people mention these guys but I really don't know anything about them. I was thinking Jermaine Kearse from Seattle should be looked at. Seems like a solid player with decent size and good hands. Megatron and Jeffrey seem like pipe dreams to me but who knows. So I'm guessing this also means Tyms and Dobson are done?

FYI, compensation picks cannot be traded THIS year. They can be traded starting next year.

I'm really intrigued by Kearse as he's been limited by a run heavy offense. He showed what he can do in the last game when they really let Wilson rip it.

I really want to see us improve our offense ! We are finally in good shape on the DL & DB's so let's get Brady some more weapons. I think we have some talent on the OL, but something needs to be fixed. The run blocking is horrible & the pass blocking is worse. They also got worse when Stork returned & Andrews went to the bench.

The biggest area of need for the offense is another WR weapon. Amendola, LaFell, Martin are just JAGs who are nothing special & shouldn't be starting on a Super Bowl contender.
We need another quality receiver to go with Edelman & Gronk. When James White (a backup RB) is targeted 16 times in the AFC Championship game, it should tell you something. Amendola, Martin & LaFell all struggle in man coverage & get no seperation.

Get a Quality receiver & also add a guy like Travis Benjamin who can stretch the field & help in the kick return game.

If we start the season with the same bunch of C+ receivers next year I am really going to be disappointed.

Zero chance they get Megatron. The Lions aren't going to cut him. The Pats won't trade for him, unless the Lions are willing to take like a 4th rounder for him (and then, some other team will offer more). If he retires, he's still Lions property and the Pats can't sign him.

Not having the 1st round pick this season sucks big time, but they can work around it. They need:

- Offensive tackle
- Wide receiver (I believe Amendola and LaFell get cut for cap purposes)
- Tight end (sad to say, Chandler just didn't cut it)
- Running back (a young guy with upside)
- Linebacker

I like Kearse, but he already said he will not give Seattle a home town discount. He said he wants to take care of his family, so it sounds like he will go to the highest bidder.

yes to fleener..we need a receiving tight end to compliment gronk.

josh gordon is another name if he's cut. i dont care about the baggage. he hasnt killed anyone ( that we know of ) but if he slips up again, then get rid of him

True, he will not give Seattle a hometown discount, but Seattle doesn't have any cap room. I think he earned himself some money in the Carolina game, but certainly not the kind of money Golden Tate got. I'm hopeful the Pats could at least make a competitive offer...especially after they dump LaFell.

That's got Patriot written all over it! :p

I'm not sure there's a position on the roster that'd benefit less from an $8 million investment than going from McCourty/Chung/Harmon to McCourty/Weddle/Chung. That's an elite guard, second tier tackle, any free agent running back, probably any free agent WR outside of Jeffrey and maybe Jones. Why would anybody want to spend that on a safety?

Does anyone have a list of specifically OL FAs? I'll see if I can find one online.

This nonsense about needing to change up techniques to go free agent heavy is ridiculous, especially at a crucial time approaching when we have many of our own to take care of.

We still have 3 picks in the top 3 rounds, so all of this talk is silly in my opinion.

I stand corrected sir.
