What's the latest on NFL Network?

Anyone know when Comcast officially drops NFL Netowrk from it's Digital cable package? I spoke to a customer service rep, but she didn't have a clue what I was talking about. According to the website it should happen within the next month. I'm debating whether I should downgrade to standard or upgrade with the sports package.

I suspect it will depend on the final outcome of the court case.

NFLN lost the first round and then appealed. The first judge said there was no merit and it shouldn't even have been brought to court. The appeal judge said it did, and so they are appealing. Have no idea if its been presented, or if they are still putting it together. In any event I think everything is on hold until there is a final judgment.

Comcast actually sent out a cable message about how it was going to move NFLN to the sports block, and directed you to their web site. This was a couple days after the first loss in court was announced. There is a page about it on their site with FAQS, and it was about how you would have to upgrade to keep it.

I wish they would grandfather the current subscribers if they are going to do it. But I have heard nothing since the NFL said it was going to appeal.

WHAT? I just received a damn letter telling me that I have to pay more to keep the same package.

This is basically what the letter states " Effective July 10 the digital cable package Digital Sports Package will no longer be available. But for $7.95 i can get the Sports ENTERTAINMENT Package"

Basically I'm paying a dollar or two a month for the same stuff. NFL NETWORK is part of that.

But here is the kicker, to get the DIGITAL SPORTS PACKAGE, I'm have to have digital cable which is 14.99 a month. So basically I'm paying over 20 bucks a month for 1 channel I watch.

Thank God I'm not on a budget but I'll tell u one thing, when I move this OCtober, my new home will have Direct TV..

I don't think you understand. The issue is that NFL wants Comcast to put NFL network on its basic digital package, and charges Comcast $.95 per month per digital subscriber. The vast majority of these people (over 99%)could care less about nfl network. 7 million people are paying a buck a month for something they don't watch

Comcast wants to move nfl network into a sports package, with only 750,000 subscribers.

I do not see how the NFL Network can tell Comcast how they must arrange their cable packages. The only reason NFL Network cares is that they want $.95 from all 7 million digital subscirbers, rather than the 750,000 who get the sports package.

I'm not a fan of cable by any means, but it is clear to see who the money-grubber is here.

Perhaps you would feel differently if you were forced to pay for The Romance Channel or the Composting Channel.

I see nothing wrong with building packages with a number of premium channels, or packages with a number or sports channels, or packages with a number of any specialty channels. Target the audience rather than make everyone pay for everything.

You must have digital cable already, no? NFL Network is a digital program. You can't get it unless you are paying for digital.

Are you confusing digital with High Definition? You don't need Hi Def to get NFL Network, at least at this time.

(If you don't have Hi Def, what are you waiting for? You will not believe the difference is quality in games on CBS, NBC and ESPN.)

Yes I have digital programming. I could really careless about it. The only reason I have it is to get the NFL channel. But in order to get the NFL channel I have to pay 15 bucks for 1 package and 7 bucks for another package to watch the NFL channel.

I have HDTV on Comcast and its not really that good. I have a 51 Sony HDTV and I must say the motorola digital box is crappy. PLus that service is about another 20 bucks. I use the DVR the most. But lets be honest, they are 3 times the price of Tivo.

HDTV on Comcast is limited to a few channels. Some of the channel u think u r getting in HDTV are really not. Its not 1080i.

Comcast is a premium priced service that is not really worth it. Their competitiors are much better now.. With Verizon Fios, Tivo and Directv, YOu get a better product for a lower price.

Are you aware you pay for NESN. How many people actually watch it? Before u had to pay for it to watch it years ago. Now its "standard" but in reality, its not. You pay roughly 1 dollar every month for it.

Every company looks to maximize its revenue and I won't fault Comcast for that. Hell I do it to. But in my business, I have little competition to worry about. Where Comcast does..

Yeah, but it's not as if Comcast is going to reduce the price of the digital package even though they're reducing the # of channels it offers. So where's the benefit for those not watching NFL Net?

Any self respecting NFL fan should already have NFLN and Sunday Ticket, I just cannot imagine football season without it. I would however like to see some competition (maybe have dish network carry it also)

Having to always stick with direct tv because they have the monopoly on Sunday Ticket is lame.

So 7 million people are paying $1 less now ? Has Comcast has reduced their basic service price ?

Of course not.

As many here have complained about, the only reason Comcast did this is to force more customers to buy the digital package. And collect more revenue on the exact same cost.

In other words, soak the consumer.

How anybody can defend Comcast in this is beyond me. You're getting screwed.

I'm firmly on the side of Comcast here. Look, Comcast had to pay the NFL for the right to carry the NFLN. I forget the exact figure, but let's say it was 30 million. As with any business, in order to maintain profits they have to recoup that investment. There are two choices:

1) Raise everybody's bill by 4%. This includes people who will never watch the NFLN. Or

2) Move the NFLN to a "tier". Basically, you pay 7 bucks for the NFLN and get the other sports channels as a throw-in.

It's clear to me that elderly grandmothers in Pensacola shouldn't be subsidizing NFL fans.

The money-grabbing entity here is the NFL. They want their cake (Have the NFLN pumped into Comcast's customers' homes) and eat it too (Tell Comcast how they should offer it to their customers).

I'm sorry, If I'm the CEO of Comcast, there's no f'ing way I'm allowing the NFL to tell me how to offer their product after I paid 30 million for the rights to it. I paid the fee, now it's my call as to how I'll recoup the investment. And I think they're doing it the right way.

Comcast showed it for free last year while the case was pending, and maybe to whet the appetites. They lost money carrying it. They choose not to do so again.
