John Fox is out in Denver

Why would fox want to stay there? Peyton or no,that team is imploding. Getting fired, Fox gets all his money [I assume he has some] and gets to job search coming off a 12-4 season in an environment where the first hire was Rex stumblebum.

And to top it off, he can get some sun and bring back some real Cuban cigars.

The Patriots 2001 team is an excellent example of a team that was built with free agent after free agent, and won.

Low priced street free agents. Somehow, I don't think that was what he meant, as a comparison to Denver.

Now you're just moving goalposts. That team was stacked, deliberately, with free agents.

Much as it would have been stacked with
No, they don't.

Inflation adjusted, I don't think that whole group combined cost as much as one Denver free agent.

I have to give you credit from a technical argument point, though.

He gets paid by Denver through his contract there, unless/until he takes another HC job.

It's not a 'techical' argument point. It's how the Patriots dynasty was built:

Parcells players + Large numbers of FA + BB draft picks. The below is all that BB had drafted up to, and including, the 2001 SB season.

The reality is that you can win by going heavy on the FAs, and the Patriots are a good example of a team that's done it. That used to be a source of pride around here.

"You only have yourself to thank for this mess, John Elway."

"Don't mind if I do, Peyton. Thank you, John Elway!"

That was a strange press conference - and yeah, they cut out right as the Pats game was getting to the good part, d%#*!@t!

Elway's enthusiasm was...weird. I don't know how else to describe it. He really did stick it all on Fox, because, you know, Elway KNOWS how to get over that hump.

He couldn't understand why they weren't playing their best football at the end of each of hte last two seasons...well, here's a hint for him: Seattle was really good last year. Really good, and no, John, you weren't going to beat them.

And this year, the Broncos sucked in the playoff because Manning had probably the WORST game I've ever seen an NFL first-string QB have, and I'm not exaggerating. Everyone on both teams knew it early on, too.

But here's the thing about Elway's performance: I would welcome that kind of GO-GET-'EM! attitude in a player, even a coach, but not in a GM. Not when he's ready to throw people overboard, under buses, and all the rest.

A winning franchise in the NFL is about stability. Players want to know that if they do their job, they will be rewarded, and coaches want the same. I don't know why a top-rated FA coach would go there to be Elway's sacrificial lamb.

48-16 over four years, playoffs each year, two AFCCG's and a SB appearance, and Fox gets treated like that?

I don't think Elway's got the right temperament for a GM, honestly. And watching that presser, if I was an FA player, even, Denver wouldn't be my choice.

After this latest choke, his psyche is shot beyond repair. And Fox knows it too. He thinks he could more easily salvage that other choking diva in Chicago before he could ever save Peyton. That says a lot.

I think Fox is out of there to get away from Diva Elway, not Diva Manning.

Thats pretty much the take.

"John Elway looked at this season as, ‘This is all or nothing, with what we spent, you’ve got to go win us a Super Bowl.’ And the relationship between Elway, not just with Fox, but with the entire coaching staff, they both needed a split from each other."

I'm not sure what the deal was but clearly Elway was not pleased with what was going on.

Of course it is, but they were bargain basement free agents. Are you making an apples to apples comparison with what Denver did? Also, the defensive core was Parcell draftees. Seymour was coming into his own, but they were in their prime.

And given all the "boos" I heard during the game, the DEN fans weren't pleased either.

This year it's the coaching staff walking the plank. Next year it very well could be Elway, especially since he still is going "all in" with Payton Moaning.

So I guess we won't find out for a couple of weeks if Manning retires. Maybe he wants to see if Brady wins another ring or not. If Brady wins, he'll give up all hope of ever being seen as an equal, even if Peyton wins another. If that's the case, I say let's make sure we send him off on his retirement and save him from further embarrassment.

I don't get it. The Bears are fishing in the dark if this vacuous retread tops their list.

John Fox has taken two different franchises to the Super Bowl. How many other available coaches have that kind of resume?

I'd need to do a refresher on exactly how he helped Carolina make the trip, but Denver was all about Peyton and his OC, and to a (much) lesser extent Del Rio. Fox is a glad-handing used car salesman who was along for the ride.

The idea that Fox was just along for the Manning ride in Denver is simply not accurate. He took the Tebow Broncos to the playoffs and won a game.

Woody is covering his bases. As I said you never know if he'll change his mind at the last minute. If he does, they'll have a PLAN B.

That Woody Johnson is a genius.

Your post referred to Fox as a Super Bowl coach of two teams. If you want to include the playoff trip with Tebow, that was thanks to QB coach (and eventual OC) Adam Gase.

I understand the right thing is to hire the guy not the resume, but this idea of taking the OC or DC from the most talented teams seems to be a consistently failed method.

Absolutely agree.

Most of those OC's from extremely successful offenses happen to have, well, an extremely successful Quarterback, and they're always hired to a team without that guy.

Very successful DC's usually tend to come from, great defenses and go to not so great defenses.

Hard to be as good as you were without the personnel that made you look that good.

Coaching hires should come from units you can make the distinction of outperforming their personnel. Like Dallas' D, for example. Rod Marinelli should probably get a few looks for what he did with those guys. They were by no means great defense, but those defensive players should have had Dallas competing for a top 10 draft pick, not a controversial call away from the NFCCG.
